Can you imagine how fucky his actual science when he is this hard headed. Good science takes admitting you were wrong...

Kindof unbelievable he is trying to whinge about cost when the entire rest of the industry is hugely more expensive. NASA was giving everyone fairly juicy contracts since they were trying to get companies to jump into doing something new (carrying supplies to the ISS, and then living human beings), so yeah they are kindof high margin contracts compared to normal if you then do that thing effortlessly.

'Seeing through delusion' doesn't have a self-reflective component, it would appear. Space travel being expensive and market monopolisation isn't a huge gotcha in this industry.

After weeks of seething about SpaceX rockets, his most recent tweet is to imply Musk is a rapist (he posted a meme saying he was on both Diddy and Epstein's party logs, which may be true but also may be bullshit)
I wouldn't be surprised if Musk is a rapist, but using photos of anyone with Diddy or Epstein is stupid as those two intentionally made it a point to be photographed with people and to get those people to visit them. Maybe if someone makes multiple visits to the island or parties, but even then you can argue nothing happened without evidence as the guy might just be giving them non illegal shit to go there to get to another target.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the celebrities and powerful people who were going there did some horrible shit, but those two fucks had contact with pretty much anyone and everyone.

I highly doubt that Elon Musk is a ****** but I do like a low IQ British man pretending to be a scientist falsely accusing the richest man in the world of being a ****** he doesn't even know who you are thunderfoot who you will never be a real scientist you have no research grants you have no scientific achievements

We can all laugh at Thunderf00t's autistic obsession with Elon Musk, but his standing as a scientist isn't disputed. He has published over 30 papers in academic journals whilst working in Czechia — two of which were in Nature, one of the most reputed journals in the world. He has also helped to understand the fundamental interactions of alkali metals with water, which is a notable achievement. He's a scientist through and through. Minimizing this aspect of his success is pure cope.

Well I'm sure those understandings of alkaline metal really making a positive impact on people's everyday lives and aren't just nonsensical stuff people publish in scientific journals and Czechia here no Czechia here the country known for great scientific advancements and not being backwards Balkan Germans.
I'm sure this understanding of alkaline metals has a lot of real world applications it doesn't but we can pretend I was once published a check in scientific journal and I was once published in a Serbian scientific journal

I'm sure he's had a very prolific scientific career.
But, Thunderf00t has made a mockery of his very public reputation so it's no wonder people have started to question it. He "performs" science for a large audience but can't push away a single note of his bias when it comes to things like Musk. It adds noise to any clean science he's actually doing with other content; even if it's just "youtube science".

It's kind of funny because a similar reputation suicide is plaguing academia. The amount of retractions has 10x'd in the last decade so being "published" and "peer reviewed" to lose a lot of weight.
It's a little alarming how science at the highest level of ivy league and Government entities getting caught coming up with conclusions and getting the data to fit. Set aside the other issues of DEI, politicking, plagiarism that have taken over almost every field.

Some small corrections. 1 paper in Nature. The other looks like Nature Chemistry which although still prestigious is not the same thing. Also a fair amount of the papers he's like 4th or 5th author. I'm too lazy to click on each one but usually, unless otherwise noted journal article authors are listed by contribution with the 1st author being the main contributor and the last being the supervisor. Authors after the first vary wildly in their involvement they could be nearly equal coauthors to those who barely contributed at all. Once you get past third it tends to start getting iffy. It could be a guy who did one experiment or sat around in meetings mostly all the way down to someone who for all intents and purposes wasn't involved.

Not to knock his career at all. The life of a scientist is often a brutal thankless grind and he seems to have better output than most. Getting even 1 nature paper is prestigious. But its ambitious grad student or professor prestigious (I think a Nature/Science/Cell paper is a soft requirement for getting hired as a professor in certain higher tier universities) not necessarily market changing prestigious. And there are plenty of people with multiple nature papers. Any one of Musk's major achievements far outstrips his and could define the entire career of a very successful prominent ceo or scientist. In other words he could be a relatively senior scientist in one of Musk's companies but probably not one of the top guys.

Also his body of work in no way shows any considerable expertise with rocketry or space ship engineering. Maybe if he was criticizing Musk's soda pop volcano we could pay him more heed.

True and a very worrying trend. The repeatability crisis is another problem too. The churning output of paper mills and AI written content may also be contributing. But I agree. We can only hope that the self-correcting nature of scientific practice (when done right) eventually uncovers these faults and corrects for their pitfalls.

It's alarming for sure. Scientists are just people after all and tend to be susceptible to all the allures of fame and a positive social image.

My mistake, thanks for pointing that out. I admit that I just skimmed his list and didn't go into many of the details (much like Thunderf00t himself).

That's true, but I would add that this is a characteristic of the average Joe scientist. The majority of people won't be outputting market changing technologies. Some of these researchers spend their whole career working on a small part of something that might become a major discovery, technology, or solution to an unknown problem. It's a grind as you point out.
Any one of Musk's major achievements far outstrips his and could define the entire career of a very successful prominent ceo or scientist.
Agreed. No dispute there.

Yes, you are right. I wouldn't necessarily be as concerned about this though. He clearly has an interest in the subject and has for some time. Predating his obsession with Musk. If someone has a grasp of the core science they can comment on a wide range of topics and provide valid inputs. Even if it is simply probing the surface level of a deeper problem. His obsession with Musk has led to some absolute reaches - there is no question - but some of his comments are valid. We do need the critics and the fans to keep debating to help refine and discover problems or solutions. Most of it is garbage, but some of it is useful. In the wider scheme of things it's just added dialogue I suppose.

What is irritating and strange about Thunderf00t is his lack of nuance and absolute positions against individuals he does not like. But if you have watched his content for any length of time, this is a feature, not a bug. The Starship stream was a perfect example. He almost couldn't even bring himself to acknowledge the achievement of the rocket catch. He was waiting for it to crash and burn. It is hard to take an objective position on something when you have such an emotional investment in one side.

I also don't fully get his costs argument. This applies to many frontier technologies. How many untold billions of dollars have been invested into quantum computing? These technologies are happening, it's a matter of when not if. The US needs to lead on them or someone else will.
