Is this a different court case? Dave is accused of stealing from his parents via a charge card, and harassing them, so how is his father's purported abuse relevant?

I don't think so. The only case is the criminal one against Dave. In his mind, there will be a future civil case against his parents. But he does not have a lawyer for that. Remember all the posting about looking for one? I doubt the man linked above will be both defending Dave in that case and running the civil one he is (hoping to) put together.
His facebook posts have explicitly said that he should have an easy time getting a lawyer because he has all this evidence. So most likely Dowling has impressed on him that he can't use these tapes for the upcoming trial.

Yep, that's what I meant. Dowling's handling the criminal case and clearly doesn't want to take on a civil case with Dave, hence Dave asking online for referrals and complaining that he can't find a lawyer to sue his parents for many millions.

It might be believable if he said, “I dropped off the USB with the evidence like you asked” or something. But this comes off about as naturally as when a character in a film says, “As you know, [necessary plot point for the viewer].”

It looks to me like it was malnourished from birth and will always be sickly, but having the stinkbug drag it around on a leash and wring it for responses he wants is not helping. He treats it the way a 3-year-old would treat a plushy. not as a living being with needs distinct from his own. A lot of what he does has got to keep it in a state of constant anxiety. :::MATI:::

Wow, a landmark case. Dr. Joe Muscato will be the first person found to have broke the law through text messages alone.

Or well, he would be, except the police he has under his thumb refuse to charge him and Danielle is forced to go the civil route.

I suspect whatever lawyer he's been harassing enough to get them to pay attention was hoping this tasked busy work would make Dave go away. A lot of bad clients will not bother to do this.
