It is cognitive dissonance of the highest order, and their brains literally cannot take the strain without escape valves -- like calling you Nazi, which other than just "not part of the tribe" it also means "person of unforgivable moral failing." Because if you don't agree with the tribe, you must be a person of moral failing, and by definition that is unforgivable.

They will kill to protect that lie. Not themselves, although maybe -- but you. Me. Trump. Everyone in Israel. Everyone in East Palestine, Ohio. Everyone in a rural area hit by a hurricane. Everyone in line to vote next week in red districts in swing states. They'd kill you stone dead to protect the lie if they could find a way to get away with it, and they wouldn't even feel bad about it after doing it.
