So some of you think bg3 is an example of woke being done right.

"Woke done right" implies woke can be a positive aspect to the media, which is never the case.
BG3 is simply woke in the least intrusive way I've seen so far. You can avoid most woke aspects and the game lets you kill or be evil towards every woke character. It could have been better, since (on release) you could accidentally get into a gay romance route when trying to do companion quests.
But BG3 would still be a better game if it didn't have gay bear sex, gay orgies, cuckolding, drag queens and some other gross things.

So some of you think bg3 is an example of woke being done right. Never played it myself but I struggle to come up with more examples. The only thing I got is not even from a game but the tv show The Expanse. That show literally had polyamorous space pirates and they made it work without being lame. Games writers are typically not the best writers to begin with, just seems like a fool's errand to even attempt to make a good woke game. I can't wait for Troonguard to bomb.

I think it comes down to two things the setting and the genre.

1. Setting - If progressive values are inherently a part of the world/setting, a good writer will write in such a way that it's normal. There isn't any preaching, they do interesting things with the concept, and work to make the world deeper and more interesting.

2. The Genre - I've always held the opinion that Diversity for the sake of diversity in fantasy sucks and is unrealistic because it doesn't take into account the technological, cultural, and geographic aspects of the world itself. Despite what a lot of people want to say, the ancient world didn't lack diversity because "muh racists", it's because any form of mass migration was far more difficult. On the flip side however, I think it's weird when sci-fi lacks that diversity because it's inherently easier for that diversity (whether ethnic or ideological) to believably be part of that world. I would even argue it's less believable when there's not.

For Baldur's Gate, the setting is one where interdimensional transients is inherently part of the world, so the idea that there is both cultural and ideological diversity makes sense. The writers also don't go out of their way to make is seem like it's a big deal. No one in the game says "Wow, despite being a black man, Wyll is certainly doing well for himself". Instead, it's just that "Wyll is the son of a Noble/Warrior that has been established in the setting". Additionally, the technology (and magic) is sufficiently developed and integrated enough where it lends to the believability of such a mixed/diverse world.

This has been the case going as far back as (at least) BG1.

On the flip side, Previous Dragon Age games have gone out of their way to establish the opposite. Outside of a few places, Magic is Taboo and dangerous. The Technology is similar to that of (at least) the renaissance era, and that there are strong racial and cultural tensions between not only different races, but different factions all together. The Chantry was a strong, powerful driving force similar to the Catholic church. Despite being a fantasy world, Thedas felt very grounded.

This is all irrelevant in the Veilguard, and it's obviously not the same as the world that has already been established.

The difference is one utilizes the world to craft an immersive and believable experience, and one is obviously written by modern day Californians Canadians as a way to promote their own political and personal agendas.

(You can substitute 'Diversity' for whatever woke slop you want, the point remains the same)

I doubt Veilguard would be any different if BG3 didn't exist but you definitely notice a trend where BG3 gets a pass because Veilguard is even worse and that Overton Window just keeps getting shifted. The ending up there actually felt more like an acknowledgement that there will not be another Dragon Age game. The ending text basically says that the last Blight ever has been stopped, and Thedas enters an unheard of age of prosperity. Happily ever after, in other words.

Thanks, I will not have to watch 2 hours of probably shitty ending. Unfortunately, if they achieve financial succes, somehow, they might still find ways to rape the licence even further despite losing the Bligh and the elven gods to drive the plot.
