Tarrifs are short-term damage to incentivize long term economic prosperity and security. In short, things COULD get more expensive (not always, and not for everything), but the moment that industry moves back into the U.S. things either even out, or in fact get cheaper due to logistics costs being considerably less.

They also make a LOT of money for the government to effectively no damage against average Americans. Plus, it fucks over the global hegemon of Chinese/India based trade.
