Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

Every scene it happened in featured a large number of Tuliyollal citizens and they absolutely wear colorful clothing.

I think some of you need to go back and (God forbid) rewatch most of the "big speech at the Dawn Throne" scenes. I was spotting copypasted NPCs left, right, and center on my first go-around.
I'll take your word for it. I'm good.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAH

nice fucking job
billion dollar market cap company btw

I was sent into a laughing fit by the first voiced cutscene.
So one of my complaints in the main game was that the US and UK studios had totally different recording levels and masters. It sounded so obvious that these were two completely disparate setups that had zero effort put into unifying them.

How is this issue addressed in this first instance of extra voice-work? Well, it's clear that in the end the master was given to one studio rather than to two separate studios. And I think it's pretty clearly the US studio, because the reverb effect sounds like a fucking stock audacity plugin. I would hear a character talk and I'm just like... holy shit. How is it this amateur? How is it this... bad? Go ahead and re-listen to the funeral - really pay attention to the echo. Does that make any sense for where they are? What the hell is that reverb?

I was going to ask if maybe it was Sena's 'audio engineering' (LOL) skills but it sounds like this is a more generalized issue.

I really want to know details on this studio, and any connections to people at SE.

Talked with a friend just now about how scuffed this patch is turning out to be.

She told me she's thinking about unsubbing. I'd join her on that if I didn't have a house and Free Company to maintain (I know autodemolition is currently halted but I don't want to risk letting it slide for whenever it does get instituted again, especially since I didn't realize autodemolition got disabled until one of you pointed it out to me).

So Sena wouldn't be submitting vocals personally, not outside of the pandemic. Y'shtola was a special case where she was recording from home due to maternity leave (not that the character had any reason to be in the story, but that's a separate issue). The same recording setup would be used for Sena as the rest of the US cast.

Like the moustache-twirling Goebbels character. You know: the one voiced by Koana. Because his VA has literally one voice. And this is like the tenth character voiced by him. I want to point out that Gaius van Baelsar in ARR is the voice of Bobobo Bo Bo-Bobo. But that's also besides the point.

In the funeral scene, there are what sounds like London accents and the LA studio. Unlike in the main game, it sounds like someone was monkeying with the master to make them sound... loosely like they were recorded in similar rooms. Now in an ideal case, you professional studios have access to the same mics so they can coordinate on which ones to use for their actors - and on what size of room to use them between. For example, I use a Rode Nt1 nowadays, which is a condenser mic. Before that, I used a Blue Yeti, which was a dynamic mic. These two mics produce very, very different sounds, and the room you use them in further changes up the way that they sound.

You don't need to have the exact same mic to avoid this issue. But you probably are looking for the same type of mic and a similarly-sized room, which they didn't do in base dawntrail. Even that wouldn't have been an issue if an audio engineer had been given both masters, such that they could tinker with them to get them sounding at least roughly the same. And I wager most people didn't hear the difference in audio quality in the base game, tbh. When I was looking through old quest cutscenes, I found that Minfillia peaked the mic... fucking constantly. I just couldn't hear it when I played through originally because I was less aware.

Of course, you naturally avoid this by having everyone record in the same studio - and given that there was no fucking reason to split the VA work to US-UK except for nepotism (no other localization seems to have split it), well... yeah. God, I also love that for all the 'cultural consultants' they brought on, the only food in the continent is tacos, and the literal first quest of the patch is HEY WANT TO EAT SUM TACOS??? MMM I LOVE TACOS TACOS ARE SO GOOD

The issue with the funeral is that the reverb effect applied... sounds awful. It sounds really amateur. It's applied to both the US and the UK case, which admittedly does normalize them so it's hard to really hear if the original recordings have the same variance in studio setups... but the fact that it sounds like a stock plugin is the problem. And then there's that fucking typo which... literally any QA team would have found, if the QA team had been working. Sure, it's more important to get the dungeon and alliance-raid working properly -- but you don't need more than an hour or two to have someone proofread the fucking cutscenes. This typo's gonna get hotfixed in a day or two I bet. But the godawful reverb is gonna stick.

Sphene just sucks as a villain. Her whole thing is just a soulless retread of the past 2 expansion packs. Even Hermes and meteion were far more compelling than her. At least those two were good ideas on paper that could have been great if EW wasn’t so rushed and we got more time to flesh them out. Sphene just feels like she was thrown in at the last minute because they forgot they needed a main villain. Athena would have made a far better female big bad then her which is ironic since Hiroi wrote the Pandaemonium quests.

Also I found the entire thing with Solution 9 and alexandria and the whole soul thing so dumb and ridiculous. There have been a lot of out there concepts in past msqs but at least those fit in with the game’s world.

It's not that you couldn't fit it in - in fact, it's pretty ideal to have a futuristic city from another world. The bigger deal is that there's about a thousand problems with it's design and implementation, not least of which being that the shitty way the plot's designed requires mutual regicide to be just water under the bridge.

I've worked with more than a few studios where talent patches in and was just speculating because reddit had been touting Sena's 'ability' as a director and how they have a 'professional setup' in their home.

I wouldn't have been surprised if he convinced his SE handlers that he knew what he was doing, which is why shit came out so wack.

I can't wait for an Italian-themed expansion and everyone is running around talking like Mario and the "That'sa One Spicya Meatball!" guy.

It's funny how Endwalker has a literal Indian island to do and only like 1/6 expac to cover it and somehow that was more genuine and less offensive compared to the "hola y latinx, I like tacos" the whole of Dawntrail shaped up to be.

It was probably a good idea not to make the Radz at Han section of Endwalker be 'Shit in the streets once again.'

E: But it is hilarious how they were able to take Indian culture and weave it into the game. If it was just all curry curry curry curry curry curry curry curry curry (which, yes, there is some of that in there) it'd be the same thing as Dawntrail.

MSQ in this patch was meh.
I'm too tired and sleepy to properly articulate my thoughts but here's a rough summary until I have enough wits to not sound like a retard:
Alexandrians are still just as whiny and insufferable as they always have been.
Literal clone army in the funeral crowd.
I wanted to a punch a kid in the face.
Koana developed a hard on for rroneek in a single quest.
FAMIREE.
I don't what a proper sentence is?
Galool Ja's mom is some nobody dumb broad who thought tricking a murderous sociopath that she has an obsession with into impregnating her would suddenly turn him into a family man overnight. Then is shocked when he freaks the fuck out and rejects the whole thing and cries like a pathetic turd over a microphone while fantasy hitler yells at her before dumping her baby into a lake and fucking off to die.
Sphene is back and she's worse than ever. Thanks Yoshi-P!
...I'm going to bed.

Calling it now, they're giving her the Yotsuyu 2.0 treatment. HIROI IF YOU'RE READING THIS STOP RIGHT NOW.

What was the FUCKING POINT THEN?

That one spoiler alone has managed to send me from "I don't want to play this patch" to "Fuck this patch".

I swear, Alexandria really has been the bullet to the back of the head of this game's narrative.
