My favorite "retcon" was when they were promoting Sonic 4 and they had the fucking audacity to say Knuckle's story in S3&K was happening at the same time Sonic's was.

In fact i remember reading a video game magazine in the 90's when S&K came out and the fucking retarded author of that section stated that "Robotnik wears a mask so that Knuckles won't get brainwashed again"

Nevermind the fact that that makes no goddamn sense, the author clearly didn't take notice of the ROBOTIC FUCKING ARMS as well.

It's been this way for years. Gonna show my autism but i been a fan since the early 2000s (Adventure 1 was my first game with CD being my second) and i remember peolpe having issues specifically with Amy but it was just general whining and crying. The character herself was never meant to be taken that seriously as her personality and the whole thing with Sonic is a japanese humor thing at least how i see/saw it. Keep in mind Sega was almost strictly more focused on its Japanese branch for a long time even though they were aware of the west and specifically in the 90s with Kalinske learned how to market to the west.

They didn't start taking things so seriously until about the 2010s and as we know was the birth and start of social justice. Going back a bit i can't remember who specifically but i think it was a writer on Sonic 06 who genuinely didn't know the west hated Elise so it was safe to say they were kind of aware but not too aware of the western fandom overall until the internet really became more and more mainstream in its use. I don't think it is a mere coincidence considering now there is bigger voices for the west like Flynn and you also got Kishimoto and Iizuka who have referenced the western side of the franchise several times. Adding on how if you notice how strange Sonic has been they always try to cash in on what is current at the time (2010s is where we saw more meta humor thanks to them seeing how peolpe are revenging the sonic twitter not to mention meta internet humor was all the rage) nowadays we see a lot of companies lean towards more idpol. I like to imagine that now would be the perfect time for Sega to like every company pretend to care about the current consumer who they think cares about all these social issues which is why Amy specifically is one of the characters people can paint as them "learning".

Rouge being censored is two birds with one stone because you can get the censorship points as well as more headpats for learning to let go of "problematic" material.

TL;DR - They have kind of been aware of the criticisms of these cahracters but didn't care until now because it's seen as the marketable thing to censor and pretend the industry is "growing up"

Playing some more Mania tonight. I still can't decide which one I prefer for Sonic, the Retrobit Big6 Genesis controller or the 8BitDo Neo Geo pad. The clicky Neo Geo mini stick is wonderful to use but for twitch reflex platform games (Sonic at least) I'm actually inclined to say that the Genesis shield pad design is superior. I have probably already recommended these two controllers in this thread, but can't get over how much I love them. Very high quality game pads. They make playing retro console platformers more fun.

Sonic 06 had many issues that aren't gameplay related.... A woman trying to fuck an animal being the big one.

others include janky mocap, eggman's awful redesign, and Blaze's retcon. You would have to completely redo the game from the ground up to even get it anywhere near the level of "good", and even then I don't have any faith in Sega doing that.

If I've learned anything from their past game projects is that outside of specific special stuff (like Generations which was a 20th Anniversary game), this company does not give two fucks about Sonic. Look at Boom, look at Forces, look at X-Treme, look at their mobile games. Hell, even the genesis games suffered from really strict time constraints with a LOT of ideas being scrapped. Sonic is a game series that needs all the time and love put into it to become something great. This fly by the seat of your pants style is just not going to cut it, and it's well documented that working at/with Sega is a fucking nightmare.

Chances are they will just take the Frontiers engine and shove 06 in that to make it work.

Shadow is being cool and that is good but the same argument i made with my friends i hope they let him move on from Maria because if everything about his character will just be swallowed up by him brooding over Maria all the time he can't move forward as a character this is something that i thought post 06 was the goal he moved on and accepted who he is and wanted to be

I think this being the plot of Shadow Generations was more of a multimedia tie in. they just did Maria shit for whatever kid who knows dick about Sonic who wanted the game before the 3rd movie which will obviously be heavy on Shadow/Maria.

Regardless the game was fine but the story was basically nothing new and the gameplay was good but the new powers for shadow sucked shit to use. Generations itself had the same problem it's always had where the 2D levels are terrible and nothing like classic sonic. I've always thought it's the most overrated Sonic game. Absolutely not. The "Chao rescue" amounts to nothing but seeing a bunch of in-game screenshots in the collection room and seeing a few models dance around in the back of the hub world, and Modern Sonic's drop dash is a hindrance that you can't disable in any way. The only good thing I can say about this "enhanced" port is that there's no noticeable bugs or glitches which should really be the bare minimum rather than a feature but here we are in current year.

Side note, but Sonic Frontiers can go fuck itself for making X to homing attack the default control scheme. I'm glad that for the most part the more recent games let you switch to a more sensible control scheme but it doesn't change how much I think this retardation should've stayed in the past with Unleashed. I will not press X to homing attack. I will not use right trigger to boost, and I will be happy.

Generations is a video game to me. In the most bland sense it is a video game serving its basic functions of being mildly entertaining but nothing to blow me away since i am one of those sonic fans i guess lol. I like Sonic games when they are engaging and not just connected levels but Generations does have some entertainment with a few levels. It's a fun spectacle game but that is it in fact my comparison is like if you watch fight scene compilations of movies but don't watch the movie. Sure the spectacle of the fight is entertaining but the issue with Gens is there is no "movie" to be seen to connect these spectacle scenes since the story they pretended to have is nothing at all.

how is that strange? it's how media tie-ins work. it's why we got sonic origins right after sonic 2. so kids who saw the movie in theaters or right after streaming it could play the games tails and knuckles came from. they aren't canon to each other. it's the same reason why when a movie comes out based on a book or comic it gets a new paperback with the movie poster as the cover. it's not canon to the movie. it's been this way since the 1960/70s when they started shoving pictures from the upcoming movie in paperback versions of books with the movie tie in cover. it's why when the transformers movies came out they started re-releasing the cartoon on dvd. it had fuck all to do with the movies. we would not have gotten anything starring shadow if it wasn't for the movie. that's why sega is pushing "the year of shadow" to reintroduce him to the old and do first introductions to a new audience. so we got maria shit because that's his backstory and the movie will be doing said backstory to some extent.

you're not supposed to play the game and expect the story to flow right into the movie or the movie to be a 1:1 adaptation of the game. it's multimedia tie-ins. every franchise has been doing it for 50 years. there are superman paperbacks from 1980 with Christopher Reeve on the cover like Miracle Monday but it's not related to Superman II at all besides having Superman, Lois and Lex Luthor in it. this is the same thing. we retread Shadow's backstory and brought back Maria and Gerald because the three of them will be in a multimillion dollar a month and a half after the game comes out.

New shadow mode with actually thoughtful level design and care put into the story, ian flynn-isms aside. It's the same game otherwise save for the censored to fuck dialogue in the US version.

I think the design is fine, it'd just look better if the rest of the main characters were stylized in a similar ps2 final fantasy-esque realism they were going for. The rest of the shit is so fucking stupid though lmao. Blazes retcon at least makes a little bit of sense, well I mean WOULD if the game didn't wrte itself out of existence at the end and they actually kept it as the series reboot they intended it to be. Still wouldn't make it good.
I do like how later they retconned eggman nega to be eggman's time travelling great grandson who also dimension hopped and just framed hmself as the eggman from another dimension, though. It's much funnier that way.

She wasn't in the first release of the game but she's in this one due to the whole "time has been fucked with severely" plot of generations. Some stages in episode shadow are from games that happened after generations. It's pretty clear both past and future are just fucked.

I still remember playing 2 as a kid and finding Maria's plot so damn dark. Like yes Chaos/Tikal/Gamma had a somewhat dark plot, but this was just shocking especially for a Sonic game. Think about it. Robotnik has a niece who suffers from an aids cancer immune system failure hybrid disease and she befriends her grandfather's pet project/actual bioweapon and uses The Power of Love to befriend it and give it emotions only for her living space to be invaded like Waco where she meets her end with a bullet in the back, just long enough to save Shadow......leading her grandfather to be executed on death row but not before McVeigh'ing everything in a taped testimony. And we wonder why Eggman is so evil.
