Transformers general thread - Toy Robot men based on giant robots based on previously mentioned toys about said robots

Power Rangers have a decent RPG, that's all they have going for them really but they don't have nearly as much support for that RPG as Transformers and GI Joe have. New action figures aren't too bad with the added articulation but never been a fan of them myself really.. Both MotU lines have been great so far and the Origins TMNT cross over have given the Origins line new parts for future characters.

I've always liked Transformers but didn't grow up with them. These days, all new media is retarded and gay, leaving people to revert to shit like Sonic, Transformers, Digimon. Bayformers were slop kino and I've only heard well of the animations/cartoons, but never sat down to watch.. literal kids shit. Transformers One was pretty fucking good though.

Any formerhead media worth consuming? It does seem like it's got a fighting chance to not become gay and stupid unlike every other piece of media, ie. Dbz, pokemon, digimon retelling the original story but including NUKES in episode 2.
Beast Wars is also worth watching. A lot of the older Transformers shows are available to watch on Tubi for free if you don't mind having ads.

Skybound, Marvel and early IDW if you want comics, Megatron Origin was the major inspiration for TF: One. The Sentinel vs Megatron fight is taken directly from this series.

Beast Wars and the 86 movie are the best animated works that aren’t TF One (it’s a franchise peak)

If you want reading, The Covenant of Primus was the other inspiration for TF One, it’s the TF Bible/Silmarillion, establishing the standard for the mythos, every iteration after its publishing uses it as a base.

Welcome aboard, modern entertainment has been really bad and while Transformers has had it rather roughly lately, with how old the franchise is, there's still much to enjoy. I've got some personal (lenghty) recommendations

I think G1 will always be worth a watch despite its very old age. It's definitely not the worst animation and given that this is a 80's cartoons, the stories tend to be bizarre yet captivating with the characters demeanor's being humorous and endearing. Beast Wars will always be the best CGI show and arguably has the best writing of any show. Armada is a good series as well, it meanders in the beginning but it really escalates during the second half of the show with a amazing finale. Animated is a show worth watching as well and despite being cancelled, it does end on a satisfying note. The japanese exclusive shows tend to be very divisive, but i think Victory is the best japanese anime (though i think the headmasters and supergod masterforce shows are good as well, but this one is mostly my bias seeping in, you'll have to see for yourself). If you can, take a look at the japanese exclusive Beast Wars shows, i do realize this is a risky recommendation given how radically different they are compared to their predecessors, but it's beautifully animated, even if you end up not enjoying it too much. Robots in Disguise 2001 is a great show if you're looking for something fun and casual, with some of the most unique characters that we never get to see again in future cartoons. I also almost want to recommend Transformers Cybertron, but to that, you have to ask yourself if you enjoy cheesy CGI shows with DBZ style battles.

Marvel Comics has usually been labelled as the best, for good reason. There's a US and UK version of the comics, but i'd say read both of them, classic action comics with no retarded political lecturing inserted in them. Dreamwave is my personal favorite, although unfortunately was never finished since they went bankrupt, but their art was beautiful and the stories were engaging and unlike the G1 marvel comics are also much shorter. Early IDW is a good read, but past a certain point it spirals into a narrative abomination and also avoid their terrible rebooted Universe. Skybound's Energon Universe so far has been promising, being quite reminiscent of the old Marvel Comics, but we'll have to see if it remains this consistency or diverges into IDW's hideous storytelling.

Being brutally honest here, Transformers hasn't had the greatest of games, either because compared to other franchises its lacking, or because whats there tends to be underwhelming or terrible. However that's not to say all the games are bad and the best ones genuinely are a great time. The Japanese exclusive GBC beast wars fighting game is a decent time killer, but it begs to have been on the GBA instead. The 2007 PC game is decently fun for what it is, although has problems running at 60 fps, so keep it capped at 30 if you intend on playing it. The 2009 revenge of the fallen game on PC and Xbox is about the same as the 2007 game, nothing amazing, but nothing terrible, it's definitely a improvement though. The 2011 Dark of the Moon game, no doubt is the best bayverse game, but strangely enough has never had a PC release so playing this one might be more difficult. Transformers War of Cybetron and Fall of Cybertron are the apotheosis of Transformers games. Considered by many to be the best games for good reason, they've had a wide release on many platforms and describing them honestly wouldn't do enough, these are definitely a must play for any Transformers fan. Transformers Devastation is the last good game that had been released, created by Platinum Games, if you're familiar with Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, the gameplay is very much similiar, as it's a hack n slash game.

Prime, Beast Wars, Animated and the anime from the 2000s are awesome imo. Bay verse too is a fine option, despite some gripes people may have, it definitely has the foundational aspects of TF and most of the time it's treated as serious/with respect. Bumblebee movie is a nice romp too.

Figures? Studio series when it gose on sale cuz fuck off I'm not paying 30 bucks for that. But I'm a 3rd party tard mostly.

since I saw the movie a few weeks ago I've been getting back into the transformers after 20 years mainly so my woman fucks off when she walks in and sees I'm watching little boys GROWN MAN shit and goes and watches her irritating television about women being mean to each other somewhere else.

I've just been watching shit I remember. beast wars/machines and the 2001 show. I've seen the 80s movie a bunch of times as a kid and had random volumes of the G1 tapes so I have been kinda bouncing around through G1 and it holds up better than I expected. It's pretty fuckin goofy but it's fun and has a really strange internal logic to the full retard shit it does which makes it more endearing than anything. as stupid as it gets it stays pretty solid on the rules of it's universe, and all the characters rule. I caught up on the new skybound comic which I didn't think was bad but didn't love either (it feels like hardly any plot has happened besides setting up status quos but the fights are sick and it feels like by the time we hit like issue 20 or something I'll be all in).

sometime in the mid 00s I read really shitty scans of the Marvel comics on the internet and I'm here to complain that there are no fucking nice collections with all the US and UK shit combined in order. and to my searching no autistic fuck has made them themselves to read digitally. yeah sure I could follow a timeline or publication order by just reading scans of the UK issues but that's pretty wack nobody has bothered to do that and that the upcoming compendium (which I did preorder) only looks to have the US stuff. nothing's more irritating than reading part of one book then opening another to get the next thing then going back if you're using physical volumes. anyways I hope someday they release some big nice collections with all of it in there in a good order whether as released or in universe chronologically instead of jumping the fuck around like the UK volumes did or just separate releases like IDW did. I'm mainly complaining because my vague recollections of the marvel material is that the UK stuff ruled and I was hoping it would be easy to just read that as it was intended and not rely on what appears to be the same shitty scans I found online in 2008 that are on pirate websites now when you look up transformers UK to read.

my other issue is why the fuck does it seem like no transformers shit ever stays in print? I wanted to buy some of the books like the covenant of primus and those prequel novels for something to read while I am going through this TF phase and that shit is expensive as all hell secondhand. idk if they're even any good I just wanted some time wasters but god damn I'm not paying for that. anywhore I'm a little sad I slept on the franchise almost entirely for so long because a lot of it holds up way better than I expected and there is some legitimately cool stories, characters and lore spread around throughout.

anyways complaining aside I remembered something kind of funny the other day. when (I think) the third Bayformers movie came out I went to see it, and towards the end Starscream got killed and this guy who was like 35-40 stood up and yelled at the screen AHHH FUCK NO, THEY KILLED STARSCREAM! FUCKING BULLLLLLLLSHIT! and threw his popcorn on the ground and walked right the fuck out. Starscream is probably also my favorite gen 1 character because he's a hilarious skeevy son of a bitch but I wonder about that guy all the time and if he's okay. I wonder if when he was a kid he did the same thing in the original movie when Galvatron kills Starscream too. I like to imagine that dude just loves starscream and it was inevitable he'd have the same reaction 25 years apart.

Decent size to have a Scorponok that's fits in scale with other leaders if you want that G1 look.

I had forgotten Cybertron's opening went so hard. Rewatched the first three episodes, dubbed of course, as is tradition. It's aged actually ok. A little cringe, but not nearly as bad as a lot of shit I grew up with. Had that over the top energy and shitty yet charming CGI to bring it together
are energon and cybertron worth watching? I figure when I'm done with the earlier shows I might rewatch Armada but I didn't really watch those two at all I had pretty much aged out and stopped giving a shit at that point (funny how when you're around 10/preteen you say fuck this shit to something and then when you're like 30 you come right back to it). do they follow on from armada well or are they largely unrelated? I saw RotB with a guy on a whim because we were just going to get drunk and smoke weed all day anyways so we did that at a drive-in on the tailgate of a truck watching that instead and he turned out to randomly be some kind of transformers scholar and explained to me one of them in japanese had absolutely nothing to do with the others and was tied in for the english version superficially. I don't really care that much but basically wanted to know if it flows best as a trilogy of shows or not.

outside of the bay movies and reading the marvel uk run after the first one of them the only tf shit I encountered/engaged with after armada really was the 3 cybertron games and the devastation game. i get why people say the best tf game is either of the first two cybertron ones but devastation is probably the one i think was the best and it was some bullshit we never got a longer sequel. i bought that game on a whim out of a 7 buck bin at walmart a year after it came out and was mindblown by it. the only thing i think sucks about it is how short it is. but god damn is it fun and god damn is it cool. there's a special move optimus does in that game that they did verbatim when he fights megatron in TF One and I was like holy shit. it also just looks fucking awesome. my uncles both grew up with g1 (my dad was just a little too old to give a fuck) and one of my uncles used to be a big gamer when I was a little kid but pretty much got busy with life and being an adult and gave up on it outside of fucking around on pc strategy games when he is supposed to be working on a second monitor, and that christmas I bought Devastation on 360 for his kid who was 5 or something at the time and he opened it and started playing it and both my uncles kicked him the fuck off of the game after like 10 minutes and sat on the floor obsessed with it for the rest of the day and I found out next time I saw one of them that he stayed over and they put the kids to bed and took turns and beat the game in one long sitting lmao.

the armada game was pretty cool but I never touched the movie games. it's kinda weird the series doesn't have a bigger footprint in video games because it's damn near tailor made for games. robots/guns/cars. plenty of easy genre shit you can do, beat em up/hack n slash/fighting/combat racing/platformer shooter/etc. the only other TF game I played as a kid was beast wars on ps1 and it sucked balls. you'd think they'd have been shitting out a game in a random genre once a year for all of the franchise's existence but there really aren't very many when I looked up a list, seems like crazy untapped potential.

are energon and cybertron worth watching?
Energon is okay, worth a watch if you liked Armada and want to watch a sequel series. Cybertron was actually a completely separate show that got dubbed into being part of a trilogy it was never originally part of. If you want to watch it, I highly recommend watching the original Japanese version (Galaxy Force) with subtitles so you can get the actual story the show was made for. You also don't have to listen to characters unnecessarily monologue over stock footage since some executive decided there can literally never be a moment in the show where no one is talking. Which is a travesty, because the transformation sequences are a highlight of the show. They all transform almost exactly like their toy counterparts do.

are energon and cybertron worth watching?
It depends. Me, I grew up with it. Cybertron is my default favorite just due to how much i watched it as a kid. Im sitting here, watching the re-uploads on YouTube, and just going "yep, i remember all this nearly 20 years later lmao". I can't not love it.

But that is nostalga for you. It is a solid show, but due to being dubbed/forced into the Unicron Trilogy, it doesn't exactly "mesh" completely with Armada and Energon. They do their best admittedly to try to link them together, but it's clear different writing teams worked on the shows. Cybertron's strengths is the power of hype you just don't see in virtually any other Transformers show. It is over the top, it is hammy, but oddly that's what makes it work.

Haven't watched Energon in ages but I remember liking it as a kid. I know people hate it for some reason, but I liked it back then.

Galvatron is always gonna be mine, I remember watching a taped VHS version of the movie off of YTV (Canadian Nickelodeon) and before this, my experience with TF was the UT shows.

God damn did this purple bastard leave a mark, badass voice, much better design, somehow more ruthless than the guy who led a massacre in the start of the movie, iced Starscream and to cap it off, he tried to crush Hot Rod’s throat. When I watched the cartoon years later…….. I was let down.

Consistently my favourite TF character and he needs to be seperate from Megs so we don’t have to lose one to get the other. IDW and Marvel tackled that very well.

what are you guys smoking? energon was a mess even pre dubbed.
they had to take on unicron twice in the show(while in armada they already defeated him) and then still had 10 more episodes of just super energon nonsense.
everything looks like ass because of the cell shading is not being scaled most of the time, and drops plot points like a goldfish.
kicker is also the worst human companion there ever was, he is paired with ironhide but kicks and abused him so much you start to wonder who's side he's even on.
a lot of battle also take part in space, so there is no point in anyone transforming... but they still need to sell toys, so they just transform into cars IN SPACE TO DRIVE.
the only one that can be enjoyed is the silly standalone episode with the tournament, but it only works in japanese because it's clear the dub team did not care or know what even was going on(something that also is in the entire show.)

I've weighed in on this before, but my favorite character is Shockwave. Most of the depictions of him (outside of the original cartoon) are just so cold, sinister, and calculating. Plus, I'm a sucker for one eyed robot designs. Explains why Zeon Mobile Suits are my favorites out of any designs in Gundam.
