- The way she says Yarrow. According to some Burgerlanders in the thread that's correct in US English, but my brain says that'd be spelled Yaro if I heard it out loud and I'd be wondering what language it's from. Yarrow to me rhymes with arrow or marrow, not taro (as in the root vegetable).
- Her patchy sideburns. Yuck. They don't usually show up on camera at the angle she takes most of her selfies at, but it's hard to believe she's proud of her facial hair growth like an awkward teenage boy's. I'd say too good looking to be one of Staph's ancestors but her parents were actually decent looking based on the photos shared here, her mother was pretty in her youth even (can only imagine how the drugs ruined her beauty) and Staph herself looked relatively normal before she discovered Tumblr/Deviantart/was subjected to whatever gender diverse hogwash they teach in social work degrees. It’s nice to daydream and have your own little inner world, but you don’t have to tell everyone and expect them to take it incredibly seriously. It can just stay in your head, otherwise you sound like a self-absorbed dipshit. It’s like dreams, they’re just not interesting to anyone but you. Adults should still play pretend, but acting like it makes you special and other people need to know the details and join in edges into maladaptive territory.

What an infant. I've got college kids, one of whom told me about the latest tattoo (the third) yesterday, after the fact. (I hope there aren't too many more, but it looked nice (also: $225 for black ink a couple of inches square, which is less than the prior one, which was around $350)). My kids don't have to ask permission for that kind of thing bc they are adults in certain respects (young adults, but adults) and have decision-making power and capacity. AND they work (while in school full-time) and don't ask me to pay for things like that. Amazing the freedom that working an actual job brings.

I didn't even tell my folks when I got my my first tattoos back in my 20s. I knew they didn't approve, so why cause strife? I made the appointment and met with the artist and drove there and back and paid for it all on my own. They found out when I came to dinner a few weeks later with ink on my arm. What were they going to do, remove my skin?

But that requires about 100x more the level of self-sufficiency Staph has and 100x less the level of narcissism. She NEEDS it to be a big deal and have everyone look at her so she can be a martyr.

Agreed - the main issue with therian and otherkin, I think, is the fact people who buy into it have made a whole community out of playing pretend, and the language they always use when talking about their "identity" is so vague you can never quite tell if they believe their own mumbo-jumbo concepts or they're just saying they do, much like any other new age spiritual idea (which is what this really is, though unlike the stuff boomers and gen Xers were doing, it has the internet and social media to help spread it).

On top of that, it seems to go hand in hand with genders & pronouns, a lot of people who claim an otherkin identity are also into gender nonsense, and it poses the question of whether some identities are more valid than others, for people who believe in trans/non binary - i.e. if Yarrow identifies as a Jotun and a fern is that identity as valid as her their gender? There's the obvious answer that "Yarrow" is really just a white woman named Stephanie from the U.S. who applies all these fanciful labels to herself regardless of whether or not they make sense, but Tumblrites and TikTokers and anyone else of that ilk are never going to fully admit that mental gymnastics isn't necessarily the way to arrive at a conclusion.

I don't know, there are heaps of better ways for adults to play pretend than saying they're literally a cat/frost giant/goblin trapped in a human body and joining communities of people sharing the same fantasies. This is why I unironically think video games or joining a TTRPG group would be better for Staph than hours upon end spent scrolling through gender/Norse mythology/pagan content in her echo chambers. It blows my mind that someone this into her own fantasy has so little interest in fantasy fiction.
