The Official Simpsons Griefing Thread

Regardless of when you think the rot started, the Simpsons stayed consistently good or at least decent longer than most shows ever get to even run and well after most rot to the point of total shittiness. Not to mention outlasting the family sitcoms it was initially a parody of and effectively building the modern adult cartoon genre.
I think it was best from season 2 to 8 or 1 to 10, so about 6 to 10 years, so looks that way to me.

I remember when Yahtzee was an uber contrarian and said it was only good for five seasons. Give SImpsons some credit, it had some funny bits even into the Scully years. That's about eight seasons of gold and then two to four of funny, but bland TV

I was watching Flaming Moe yesterday and that's a great episode, feels a lot like a well-done morality tale with some good character work. The ending is sweet but still cynical

I think we can break even by saying Season 12 is when the cancer first began, but 15 is when it completely metastasized the whole show. Season 15 has nothing going for it at all. I can't pick out a single stand-out episode from that season I remember by heart or look fondly on.
And "Homer vs dignity" was one of the episodes of season 12. That episode menaged to make the episode "The Principal and the Pauper" looking like a masterpiece.

I'm just going to leave this here.
It’s real sad how Homer and Marge’s relationship has been portrayed since the turn of the millennium. Originally, despite Homer’s boorish character traits, he was portrayed as ultimately caring and loving his wife and family; even to his own personal detriment. It’s that sympathetic character depth that made the show so good in the beginning, and was key to making controversial shows like The Simpsons or Married With Children so watchable. Shows today don’t have that because characters are just so one dimensional: either they’re awful people or they’re completely bland.

In this new era, being sent to prison camps should be the sentence for Simpsons fans who try to sell people on how current Simpsons episodes are good again. "We're talking at least Season 22 levels of quality, here!"

I made the mistake of believing some faggot on youtube a while back who made a whole thing of explaining how it's actually great again now. I tried watching a handful of new episodes, the ones that were supposedly the best and they were all mediocre as fuck. Not to mention Marge's voice is distracting as hell. Sounds so fucking bad now. It's insane that they absolutely refuse to put this show out of its misery. I can still see them pumping out new episodes in 20 years time, where it's solely made and voiced through AI.

I was listening to the audio commentay to The Principal and the Pauper a while back and its pretty hilarious how they try to defend and justify that obviously fucking awful episode, like it was supposed to shatter the audience expectations when all it did was shattering the audience's entertaiment. Matt Groening wisely decided not to attend that recording session.
Then again, it's from season 9 and the overall rot of the show was already creeping in.
Haven't watched the show in 20 years or so, and looking through the internet and seeing all those youtubers and whatnot talk about everything after 2000 makes me glad I dropped out when I did.
I grew up with that show back in the early nineties (I think I was 5-6 years old) when they first aired it here in Germany and some thirty years later the corpse is still around, twitching and trying to be relevant. Pretty sad IMO.

Was this show EVER good?

I think the show started to suck in the new millennium. Had it remained a '90s show, it could've stayed good or at least mostly good.

By now with Homer and Marge being "retconned" as "Millennials", and the kids using "smartphones" and "social media", it really sucks.

I think the problem is the writers as they get more and more removed from what made The Simpsons have its specific outlook on the world, instead Homer and Marge are written as The Everyhusband and Everywife. Like I always bring this up as an example: Homer being this out of shape bald alcoholic is because he's old, when you see him in flashbacks in the 60s he's meant to be, by Simpsons artstyle standards, a decently handsome young man. That's because back in the day a lot of baby boomer dads were stereotypically jocky, well put together men who became jaded, bitter, angry and ugly. Then when Family Guy started, it riffed on that idea by instead making it absurdly unrealistic: so Peter was always a fat, ugly guy and Lois instead of being a plain wallflower becoming more plain with age was and still is a smoking hottie. Then people just started doing what Family Guy did without the irony because it's funny, sometimes it happens in real life and because writers spend their time on the internet and consuming media they base what they write off of other media instead of their own experiences. So now Homer and Marge, despite having a way different origin, are written in those knock off of a knock off archetypes

Here's the thing: what else is there to do? Where the fuck else can you take the story-telling without repeating yourself? The only other direction to go with this zombie show is to age the characters but they kind of have already done that with future specials so... Just end the show. Put it out of it's fucking misery already.

I feel like the show has become the mutant abomination from the end of The Fly 2 where it begs every day and every hour for the sweet mercy of death.

The Fly 2 is underrated.

The exact total of Lisa panty shots as listed on The Simpsons Wiki...you SICK FUCK.
The fact that that someone counted the number of Lisa panty shots in the show doesn't surprise me. What shocks me is someone sat through all those terrible seasons to find all those shots.

As they said 22 years ago "Have no fears we've got stories for years", and by stories they mean bringing on every flash-in-the-pan celebrity they can book and referencing pop culture two years after it was relevant.
