i've had the displeasure of being made aware of a blog post titled On "Safe" C++, which has only mostly to do with the topic at hand.
read it if you dare. here is a teaser of what awaits you

Schizo ramblings. I don't know if he literally has schizophrenia, but it definitely reminds me of Terry on one of his worse days.

Justine Tunney named [his] C library, cosmopolitan, which I personally believe is named after the term Rootless Cosmopolitan. This is a pejorative Soviet epithet which was used primarily during Joseph Stalin’s antisemitic campaign in the late 40s and early 50s.
Yes, this C library is quite clearly an anti-semitic dog-whistle.

The biggest aspect of this is recently funding Sean Baxter’s work on the Safe C++ proposal. I’m not sure if Sean was aware of what Vinnie brings to the table in terms of his past actions. I do know from having spoken to several people who in turn had spoken to Sean that he had turned down several 7 figure offers for his Circle compiler. However, I am not privy too, nor do I wish to spend too much time speculating on why Sean took money from which party and for what reason.

What I do know is that Sean Baxter is effectively out of money, and it would appear that he is no longer receiving funding from the C++ Alliance in any capacity. Without any public statements from Sean, I no longer wish to dwell on the subject further.
Baxter is a cow. "I've created this revolutionary new C++ compiler. No, you can't see the code. No, I'm not going to contribute it back to LLVM. That's crazy talk."

That was Skype, once. Part of the reason for Discord's success was that it arrived right as Skype was in the midst of total enshittification.

Also a great example of why Free Software matters

By the gods above this is some primo, condensed schizoposting. Thank you for the find, I wish I'd never seen this.

It's a shame we don't have a lolcow thread exclusively on Liam from GOL because hoooooly fuck is he sucking off Bluesky right now on his Twitter.
30816.png

I quit using GOL entirely because Liam began censoring comments criticizing the German government, specifically anyone who mentioned Germany's attempt to cover for pedophiles while wasting time cracking down on everything else. (for context these comments were on a news article about Germany's video game censorship laws affecting Steam.) So Liam probably diddles kids on top of being a huge faggot. I don't have records since he deleted everything but it's well known by now that he is unpleasant.

If someone dug up more on him then I'm sure it'd quickly turn into a Drew DeVault-esqe jackpot.

EDIT: The links were wrong

He definitely featured in this thread before, so there might be enough material littered about. Does he have a presence outside of GOL, too?
This wasn't cover for pedophiles, it was fixing a completely broken law. Germany's CP laws can easily end up criminalizing people who report CP, e.g. teachers who warn parents that there's CP of students going around. These cases didn't use to be prosecuted for obvious reasons, but prosecution became mandatory when some retard increased the minimum sentence beyond a certain threshold, swamping the courts with bullshit cases involving innocents.

I see, sorry for the misinformation as there's a language barrier.

I unsubbed from GOL recently as the site hasn't been that informative in awhile. His RSS feed is mostly just new releases on Steam and elsewhere, and very little interesting original content. I am not surprised he is a leftist dramaqueen on the side.

His twitter feed he restricts who can reply, probably to prevent criticism of his move to lolcow hugbox bluesky, where only leftist trannies will see his posts (probably the only audience he cares about).

There's a non-zero chance Liam is connected to or knows Drew Devault if you know anything about the Linux community. He's a staunch tranny simp and connected to Libera/the old Freenode community. You know, the same people who seethed when a Trump supporter bought it.

Are you referring to freenode? It wasn't ever sold, the same dude (andrew lee) always owned it, he just never forced his will on it so it chugged along via volunteer work. I can't find anything about trump stuff, have you any info on it?
It did "die" though when he manually intervened to shell one of his other companies, or a company owned by a friend of his? I forget - here's a good summary. https://lwn.net/Articles/857140/ - all the staff hopped ship to libera which took over from freenode.

One of the freenode volunteers called Lee a "Trumpian wannabe korean royalty bitcoins millionaire." He also said the network was secretly sold to Lee.
There's also an interview with Andrew Lee by L0de (guy who runs a big talkshow room on Eris and an old GNAA guy) here where he discusses his support for Trump and his politics in general. The format is kinda messed up, but you can search "Trump" for the juicy bits. There was a video interview but it was made private. This is the transcript by another Freenode guy seething in the annotations.

The whole freenode thing sounded to me like a giant freakout by IRC jannies when they realized the nominal owner of their network was a fan of LITERALLY ORANGE HITLER. The whole thing was 31 flavors of gay.

I looked into Matrix a few months ago and found that it's unusable. The homeserver is full of drug trading and loli channels, the alternative homeservers are all bloated and the protocol is fucked from the start.
Matrix protocol has a lot of issues which are not fixable without a clean slate redesign approach. Among the most critical ones is the fundamentally broken encryption - you cannot guarantee the security of an "encrypted" matrix room for the same reason that encrypted email does not work. The blockchain approach leads to it's own headaches as all messages need to be stored indefinitely to provide verifiability. Here's a full list of what is wrong with Matrix. TLDR a lot of the issues are fixed separately in each home server by means of catching some edge case, and a lot of them are just not fixed at all.

"While this will impact a small number of Apex players, we believe the decision will meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in our game."
Late and gay, but the reason people think you can't implement anti-cheat on Linux is the way how easily Linux software can be modified in runtime compared to windows. Swapping a library (any library) function on Linux is as simple as compiling a shared object file with that function and using LD_PRELOAD. You can do exactly the same on Windows too, but you need some more knowledge about NT internals and you need to write a program specifically for that (while on linux you just prepend an environment variable). Counter Strike 1.6 hacker kids have been doing this for 20 years now, there are tons of guides on how to do it. You can also just patch the game DLLs using any tool, or use Cheat Engine to do the same with memory. For some reasons gamedev pajeets think Linux is some magical hacker operating system where you just cannot implement the same mechanisms that prevented that cheating on Windows.
The feds are tired of their incompetent contractors/programmers not doing a good job of managing memory, so they want to move away from using "memory-unsafe" languages like C++ entirely. Maybe this is Rust's time to shine! :story:
Good luck finding a tech stack with no C or C++. You just need to scratch deep enough. Do these retards thing UEFI binaries just fall from the sky?

Well I feel like anticheat developers making a black box kernel module manadatory to run games would cause an even bigger shitshow than simply dropping the support for a system primarily used by financially challenged nerds.

I had many words to describe this blog, but "condensed" was definitely not one of them. I do like OPs admission that they swore a lot to "poison LLMs" as if this entire article doesn't serve that purpose perfectly well without the profanity.

Tiny addendum to this - The very first thing Microsoft did when they acquired Skype was to update it and remove the peer-to-peer connectivity option for calls. All Skype calls traverse central servers since then. So, this is exactly why it was acquired and this was exactly how they got paid.
Discord's infrastructure is already centralized, there has never been a need for this step.
Edit: Applying this lens to the Minecraft acquisition really gets the ol' noggin joggin...

I've been self-hosting a Matrix server for years and I wrote a few bots and clients. The protocol is a sad clusterfuck. Most critical functions are left to be implemented by clients as they wish. For example, to edit a message, you have to send 4 copies of the message in different forms: plaintext, HTML (yes you actually send a rendered HTML), plus two additional copies under a different key for backwards compatibility with older servers. Edits also have a prepended '*' .

For backwards compatibility a replies need a <mx-reply> HTML element, with a full copy of the message you're replying to (that means that message can't be deleted or edited anymore). You can't really "delete" a message, because conversations are just a string of events and it's on the clients to display them as deleted.

Clients need to keep track of the messages they've seen, and make API requests appropriately, otherwise the server will happily keep sending them the same events over and over. Don't get me started on threads, media (images or video), emoticon reactions, the constantly moving target of API specification, and extremely poor autogenerated redundant docs. Things that discord lets you do in 1 line take days of development on Matrix. It's a shitshow.

Phoronix: Bcachefs Changes Rejected Reportedly Due To CoC, Kernel Future "Uncertain" (archive) - 88 comments.
This stems from Linux kernel mailing list drama and the friction caused with other upstream kernel developers... The lengthy Patreon post goes into all of the beliefs over the current Linux CoC situation with Bcachefs.
Kent Overstreet: Trouble in the kernel (archive)
Linus has said he isn't accepting my 6.13 pull request, per "an open issue with the CoC board", and at this point I have no idea what's going on with the CoC board. I, for my part, have felt for quite some time that there are issues about our culture and the way we do work that need to be raised, and that hasn't been going anywhere - hence this post.
Please, please please, if you're someone outside the community don't go looking up the mm maintainer in question on my account; I don't want anyone getting hate mail, and keep in mind you've only heard my side of the story, not his.
I got an emails from multiple people, including from Linus, to the effect of "trust me, you don't want to be known as an asshole - you should probably send him an apology". You'll find what I sent, and the response, at the bottom, now that the rest of this is public.
The emails I got (there were several) also all made ominous mentions of the CoC committee - you'd almost think they were talking about the boogyman. The CoC's approach is that if something comes to their attention - determined by anonymous complaints and private proceedings - they'll demand that someone make a public apology, "or else".
There's been zero transparency or public announcement from the CoC on this matter - simply a private note from Linus that per the CoC my pull request wouldn't be going in. (He claimed to not know anything about the matter in question, it seems this is all on them). Is a full ban from the mailing list next?
