UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It‘s getting trashed on Mumsnet too, I can’t stand how terminally literal they are about politics over there. Obviously this isn’t actually going to lead to another GE but it does a good, if ultimately fruitless, job of illustrating how fed up the public are even after just a few months and is another public embarrassment for the gov to add to the pile.

Mumsnet's weird. It's absolutely full of terfs, but for an awful lot of the women there, that tends to be as far as it goes in terms of seeing through bullshit. Though I do think there are a lot of women there that just don't bother arguing with them when it comes to anything else right-wing. Take the recent thread by an American who wonders if she should fire her hairdresser for voting Trump. There was some push back but most of the thread was, Trump's a racist rapist I could never be friends with his supporters. Or all the posts castigating him for being a dangerous narcissist in how he reacted in the literal minute after he was shot.

Though I have just remembered a thread from when Starmer took over the Labour party, a lot of the posters were hot for him, so maybe there's that.

There's a certain kind of person who is attracted to sociopathic cunts with shiny faces. Maybe they think they can fix him?

If I am late on this, then clock me, but you can see through the collected IP locations in the JSON data that there is no evidence of any foreign brigading of the petition;

The highest non-UK signee country is Australia (2,300), followed by Spain, then the US, then France. This fits well to the expat population.

Oh they'll definitely begin the slimy "a petition has reached nearly 2M signatures, but in this age of misinformation can we really rely on these metrics?"
Already have.

Like I said they’ll dismiss it out of hand. They might not even bring the topic up on those grounds alone, and use their new punching bag of Elon Musk to blame it all on.

Starmer was asked about it on some morning chat show a little while ago, after it had passed 2 mil. His response was to laugh awkwardly and say that it was just the people who voted against him in the summer, so it means nothing. Then he laughed awkwardly again.

The people behind the petition are from a 'Farage for PM' FB group, so lefties, even ones who have done nothing but rake Starmer over the coals since he's come in, obviously have to infer that anyone signing is a thick, deluded gammon.

So what you're saying is that all of Elon's minions who are brigading the petition made sure to get rural postcodes, avoid the petition during British bedtime and made sure to set their VPNs to the UK! Dastardly!
Those damn Elon chuds and Russian disinformation bots sure a crafty bunch.

I mean, Geldof was a naive idiot for NOT knowing that embezzlement and fraud would happen. FFS, it's Africa. That's litterally how things are done there.

That being said, at least SOME of the money raised for it over the years probably made it into poor people's hands. And the song is fairly catchy in small doses.

But Sheeran is complaining about it for the wrong reasons. He just blames colonialism and white people, not the general corruption and poverty that has ruled Africa for millenia.

Also, Sheeran's songs are whiny ass. He's definitley the type to get cheated on and then apologize to his girl for making her cheat.

I know little of "Sheeran" and even less about his views on Bob Geldoff. I was voicing my own dislike and I think the dislike as evidenced in the Guardian article goes back a long way. One point in the article was that it wasn't merely a case of not doing good, it did a great deal of harm. And that quite credibly the harm was actually greater than what good it managed.

Well we've passed two-million now. And it's over 5% in multiple consituencies. I welcome Kier Starmer, the farmer harmer, attempting to declare this is fake bots. Nobody will believe him. Right now, he's probably trying to figure out how to write Javascript that'll submit a fake petition so that he can point at it and say "See!"
Starmer's response was basically he doesn't care because there are around 2 million people who didn't vote for Labour anyway. By his take, these people are just "whinging". Let's see how that attitude fares!

So apparently Keir and Macron are in talks regarding deploying troops in Ukraine

So lets say they actually do it this time, my question is why? We just made a ton of cuts to our military and "apparently" haven't got money left so why at a time when our money and patriotism is at an all time low start another war?

My personal theory is that by causing nuclear Armageddon will some how own Drumpf.

They want to force a tripwire incident where their forces come under attack - whether real, imagined, provoked, or false-flagged - and they can trigger Article 5 before January.

I like The Wall though, but I can't really stand Roger's nu-rendition of making his kinogem Mid-Life Crisis Double LP into some grand political statement on how Brazilians shouldn't get shot on the Underground.
I think The Wall has a number of really good tracks, but in general, it's a sloppy disaster of a soundtrack/concept album. Compare it to Animals or even Wish You Were Here which both had unity of theme and composition. It also has way too much of Waters just being a crying little bitch. That kind of wangst appealed to me as a teen, not so much as an adult.
Is Jabberwocky a monty python film?
No. It's "almost" a Python film, sort of like A Fish Called Wanda and Brazil were but more so.
I mean, Geldof was a naive idiot for NOT knowing that embezzlement and fraud would happen.
He was MORE than a naive idiot. He was warned up front and didn't just know the general "it's Africa" rule but exactly why his particular scheme wasn't going to work. He just bulled on ahead despite getting good advice.

I think it has limited appeal because it’s such a personal album that the only people who could possibly relate to it on a seriously deep level are people like him (born in Britain during and immediately after the War.) I like the concept and the whole thing because to me it is him “bearing himself” in a way that simply doesn’t happen anymore. Not with the same authenticity, in any case.

Personally I prefer their earlier bits with Syd and the meandering prog after he left/was forced out but before Dark Side. It’s far more bold and interesting.

I do not get this. The man looks like a piece of boiled ham with a nervous , blinking expression, and always has, even when younger.
Where there is Starmer, there is the long cock of the British deep state, ready to fuck everyone who crosses it. Maybe that does it for them.

You get to send some tier-twos off to die in a ditch and get to free up more housing for tier-ones, what's not to like?

my friend's fiance has recommended me to try and scope for a husband for that sweet sweet green card - but that makes me feel sick to do. I want to meet someone i want to marry because i love them, not because of a necessity for legality, let alone for something as binding as a marriage. i don't want to shop for marriage - that feels sick. even if its 10x more difficult for me to enter legally, i would rather struggle and fight for my right to become an american citizen than do that. it feels like a betrayal against my principles.
You're not a Nicaraguan nor a Guatemalan. It really doesn't matter.

If it makes you ill to think about putting a rival drug dealer in a wood chipper, then congrats, you're better than 99% of Biden era illegals.

The US is a big country and the trash hasn't remotely fucked the country up, but that doesn't mean they aren't trying.

You're fine.

How's your marksmanship?
