Matt Hansen has a history of hating gamers as "chuds".

What they (and the rest of company "fandoms") have in common is they worship the company name, not the team. And chances are that in the time since the last thing they liked, most of the people have either left or were fired, and their replacement is the same as everywhere else, with dangerhairs owning the creative stuff and more technical shit outsourced to India.
Exactly.
There was a story from Tim Cain not too long ago about how bad the company had gotten when he was working on outer worlds.

Worth a watch.
He talks about how they got offended by him saying no and wanting to just do things. How they're all literal snowflakes that melt at any kind of friction.
Tim is a gay dude too not exactly the most intimidating man.

I'm sure Matt Hansen is a sane and healthy individual.

As much as I hate grummz..
I hate these people worse. The warning signs really are all coming together for this game.
the UI looks so cluttered and messy

almost looks like the modern UI meme

Spot on.

The steam forum is 20 pages of shitting on pronouns and Hansen.

No wonder the ADL wants to take Steam out. This keeps happening.
the UI looks so cluttered and messy
This is fucking every game nowadays but this is especially bad. Imagine creating this beautiful and intricate fantasy world and then plastering the screen in shit popups to make sure fucking retards like DSP never forget what the potion button is.

Outer Worlds was a development hell and Tim admitted there were way too many concessions and cuts. He never gave a reason for that, however. We DO know that the person who wrote Parvatti, aka the asexual pajeet in that quest everyone hates, was NOT the original writer who designed her. That would have been someone else, who only had time to write her on Emerald Vale, the game's intro, before being re-assigned somewhere else. Past that, everything else was written by a confirmed danger hair tumblr beast, and it shows. During the first 2-3 hours you spend time with her on EV, there is genuine character growth as you meet various characters, go thru the steps of the main quest there, make your choice that will ultimately decide the fate of everyone she knows and loves, ending with her abandoning her home and being excited about finally being on her own spaceship as she steps out of her shell for the first time in her life. Then...nothing, she retreats into the same state you found her, occasionally giving some quirky, "wholesome" remarks about the situation. Her only character growth at that point is that she says she likes women, except not really because she is an asexual snowflake, but she still wants to go on a date with another dyke you find that not-so-subtly hits on her on The Groundbreaker. Instead of being something actually interesting, the entire companion quest for her amounts to giving her dating advice and getting her ready for a date, that includes getting her a dress. Oh wait, this engine doesn't support cloth physics, so it's a Hillary Clinton pant suit. What?

I always saw this as a one-off thing, but I guess that was just the microcosm of what must have actually been going on in the studio at the time. If the same kinds of people behind Avowed also worked on OW, that could be why there is so much scrapped/unfinished content and why so many stories don't go anywhere/why so many locations are empty. There was so much more planned, but the studio just didn't have it in them to get it all done on time, even on their own terms(no hard time limit enforced by another party like with KOTOR2/New Vegas). Not that they didn't have any help mind you, the amount of studios that they hired to helped pushed this game out is staggering, a symptom that many other AAA games also share. The budget, the amount of time they had, and the amount of people they had working on the game didn't matter, it was the shared talent that they must have lacked if there were so many diversity hires and contractors even at that point in time. That would also explain the ugly NPCs, the absolutely abhorrent reddit comedic writing at times and the overwhelming focus on political themes(both of which were thankfully curbed for their DLC). They had time to shoehorn that in, of course

If the studio hasn't changed a bit since then, I guess we will see the worst elements of OW at full display with little or none of the redeeming factors that game had. I mean, we already saw that coming in PoE2, just you wait until we see how bad they made balancing this time around. No wonder Tim left shortly after the game released, and is only willing to work with them on the second Outer Worlds(which might not even come). This truly is not the same Obsidian people remember indeed.

Return to modular UI tradition

Greatest tragedy in gaming is this never caught on.
Put what you want on your screen, pin it or not. Move it where you want it, resize it etc...
The amazing thing is that this game also came out on Xbox. This was being played by dude bros and little kids on a fucking Duke controller. There really is no excuse.

I for one can't wait for the immediate comparisons between Avowed and Skyrim.
And for dickriders to overlook all the shit just to cherry pick the few good elements so they can say "HA! SEE? Better than Skyrim, Bethestards!"
I genuinely hope Obsidian crashes so hard it dies and gets absorbed by Bethesda for the meme.
Literally every single NV retard like TKSmantis and Schizo-Elijah would blow their brains out on livestream.

I remember having fun with the bounty missions and the mega dungeon that's beneath your keep for some retarded reason. Story? Eh. It tried something reserved for the finale of a trilogy that setup the world and the importance of animancy or soul magic or whatever it was and the gods. I could not give a shit about your own supposed past life that really doesn't matter at all.
It has the old CRPG design but the endurance system and the weapon system like you put out is holding it back.
Chanters, Ciphers, Monks etc all having different resources and gameplay designs are also cool. I really like how ludo-narratively the classes all come together.
As for the story the main quest might have seem boring but the concept behind it and how it opened itself slowly was nice. The past life schtick was not that great i agree with you but the acts are solid. The quests are also powerful. They wanted to use everything when it comes to worldbilding. From the pregnant girl who tried to get revange on her family (the demo of PoE had that quest and when i played it i really liked it.) The companion quests(aside from Eder and the Chanter). were also good. The problem with the companion quests was most of them were very bleak. One was searching for the reincarnation of a important person of her village, the quest ends with we being to late and him being dying. One of them searches for ancient sacred texts of an important philosopher to save his people, in the end the text was destroyed and the philosopher itsef turned into undead which was horribly heartbreaking for the companion. This bleakness is not for everyone but i can appreciate it to some extent.

The Colony ship was such a good game, but i did not finish it i should go and finish it after i play the Dragon age triology and maybe Pillars of Eternity 2
Iron Tower studio did make Dungeon Rats which used same setting as AoD.

There are couple upcoming games with bronze age trappings from unproven developers, The Way of wrath and Aletheia: Return of Odysseus.
Besides that only title that comes to my mind is Theseus; Journey to Athens.
Wad Dungeon Rats really an rpg? I thought it was more combat focused?
i will look at the other games. Thanks!

That's the thing. Tim is just a gay guy that made games, not a guy that made gay games.

TBH, I didn't even know he was gay until I was listening to a video where he said he was closeted when working on Fallout.
this. I'd go as far and say most people don't even have an issue with a gay or "queer" characters - if written well.
in the 90's no one gave a flying fuck about it and people understood as a character there has to be wants/needs and some kind of arc to actually be a character, so when the token gay has a happy end with another dude most people were emphatic enough to understand it.

we have the whole rainbow shit to thank for pushing it so far acceptance of that has actually go down. gg fagets...

You know...can I just have a fantasy game that isn't completely gay? Can I just have some fantasy that is me and my bros hitting orcs with various sharp implements and nary a sodomite in sight? I know that's problematic because orcs are now black people for some reason, but I just want something that is just normal for 2008. No vitiligo, no bear sex, no genderfluid shit, no pronoun shit, just something free from current year.

I was kind of interested and now I'm not. If they do the pronoun thing, then there is going to be tons of other things that have slipped in, that will just irritate me and take me right out of the setting.

a shitshow that could span a topic of it's own.
make it, you're the resident fanboy and i'm a distant 2nd but i genuinely want to know what they cut, i know they use "mah switch" as a defense for all the loading screens but the game is painfully short. I doubt the gameplay would have been fixed, or they could have added more than pallet swapped items considering the DLCs have the same stupid problems.

The things people hate the most about the game (the ugly designs, and dialogue) Would not have been fixed even if they were given 5 years to make the fucking game so it doesn't matter what happened to make it suck so much. In fact IIRC the devs said they were forced to make the characters more attractive than they wanted.
there is a ton of changes and cuts before the game became what it is
i'd love to know, because outside of the flavor texts that turn the entire game into almost a satire of the 2020s, it doesn't have much going for it. People still get pissed about the longest quest line being you helping Ash Burch's character go on a lesbo date.
Spacer's Choice is right,
If they come out and said "we named it that on purpose" it would give them a shitload of cool points, the same way Ubisoft basically mocked itself with Abstergo in the early Assassin's creed games. like they even call out DEI in the 2012 multiplayer videos. Them having their 4chan-stand in be the good guys was particularly inspired for the time. by the time of unity they abandoned the entire thing.
Oh wait, this engine doesn't support cloth physics
in the modern era? thats insane.
both of which were thankfully curbed for their DLC
i'm the only one here that also played the DLCs and while the "political" themes are gone, its still there in the flavor text and plots. like the flavored vodka color coded to people's place on the class hierarchy or are you forgetting that? Beyond that the "villian" is literally a monster that all but stands in for capitalism, forcing people to hide their pain or real emotions in order to shill the latest unhealthy goyslop. Then in the other DLC, IIRC the usual enemies you've been killing all game are all the space equivalent of crackheads because a company decided to hook them all up on drugs to get a job done and then didn't have to "pick up the pieces" and left the system with a bunch of desperate psychos

Its not like they even bothered making attractive characters in either DLC or giving you better items or apparel either, same palate swap bullshit. the so called murder mystery doesn't even matter.

the only fun part of the game was playing it so underleveled requiring me to stealth and chose my kills wisely.
