Do we even see any arabs in the games at all? For all we know they could've just very easily made this meme reality.

It does seem that Reddit has asked this question before. :story:
Don't think the games ever mention it, because of course they wouldn't. Some fan SFMs of what could have happened during the seven hour war show Islamic militants and western militaries stuck in those shitholes fighting together desperately once the combine show up. It isn't exactly explored in depth, though.

It would unironically be interesting to hear how the hell the Combine actually dealt with the Middle East other than some throwaway explanation of "overrun by superior technology and weaponry in a 7 hour long global war".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Combine solve most of the population control problems by simply doing massive population relocations? There's a reason the population of City 17 speaks English, if I remember right, North Americans got dumped in Bulgaria for whatever reason. Difficult to properly organize resistance when your entire social web gets shredded and you get dumped in an unknown territory/city.

On the other hand, most of the places outside Combine control are hellholes with a collapsing and aggressive biome, so even the Middle East could be properly fucked. Antlions for everyone.

Yes, but that would have required having gotten the bulk of a given population under control already to be able to displace people. You can't really move people around en masse if you haven't squashed their resistance and broken the will of the people to make them subservient in the first place. And while I'm willing to grant a small amount of credence to "they just mass slaughtered the mudslimes with alien WMDs", that's numbers for a workforce population going to waste and the Combine seem to care a lot about using up every resource available on the planet where possible, even hostile human resources. If they could so easily squash a guerilla resistance, then we wouldn't have the resistance that we do in the game as it is, and mudslimes don't tend to fight open ground wars specifically because they'd get curbstomped easily.

I would be inlcined to believe the only reason the Combine go full "stomp the shit out of the human opposition" in the second half of Half-Life 2 onwards is specifically because of Gordon Freeman and the threat he poses (and Eli Vance to some extent, as Overwatch starts to audibly put some emphasis on him as well in Episode 2).

Now, "alien terraforming" due to displaced species caused by the mass of portal storms that apparently broke out around the world is definitely also a good possibility but, as sandniggerish as Islamic extremists can be, they are actually a resourceful people when they need to be. I mean, we saw that people more or less adapted to the antlions' presence already. Say one armed cell manages to take down an antlion guard, and figures out how to extract a pheropod. Dealing with antlions becomes a solved issue, and we've seen certain cells of the resistance have already accomplished as much.

Fuck it, give me Islamic vortigaunts. We need to go stupider and funnier.

From this 4 year old video.
Granted, this is also presented as a caveat:

But that is just another theory, and I would think it better to go with what Laidlaw claims.

It would be pretty funny to see the vorts adopt a human religion, especially since most likely Atheist science nerds surround them.
Their adherence to the Vortessence essentially is a religion in of itself so I don't really see why any of them would ever decide to convert to a human religion, let alone one to worship brown pedophiles when their current one quite literally gives them green energy powers that lets them commune telepathically with every member of their race alongside teleportation and time travel fuckery when boosted with antlion guard extract.

yes i know none of this is a serious discussion whatsoever but i like overthinking this shit.

Sadly the only mod that I can think of that sees a different perspective of a Combine-occupied Earth is a Central-Asian themed mod called Swelter, which takes place before the events of HL2 and sees a fledging Combine occupation in Kazakhstan with an internal conflict between the Resistance.

Hey guys, sorry if this is a dumb question but I googled it and found no answer.

Basically, a friend told me that if I already own the original physical release of Half-Life 1 and its expansions (which I do), I can get them on Steam for free rather than having to buy them again.

But nowhere could I find a guide on how to do this and nothing in the Steam App itself seems to be the obvious option.

Can you guys help?

Thanks in advance.

If you've already activated the CD keys for the physical versions of HL1, its expansions, and TFC, they should already be registered to your account and you can just download them at any time.

That's basically how I ended up making a Steam account in the first place way, way back in the day.

Funny how the bad guys forcibly integrate all races and cultures together, basically into babylonian blobs removed from their home soil, making it harder for people to communicate and coordinate to properly organize rebellions. The combine are basically globohomo. You've even got the jewish advisors using other races as skinsuits.

They also incentivize the populace into suppressing themselves by offering them better benefits for joining their police force and military, promise better benefits for subjecting themselves to memory alteration programs and surgical procedures that will basically strip them of their humanity, dangle rewards like more ration allocations for reporting anticitizen behavior (albeit while also threatening punishment for even nonparticipation), and threaten "permanent offworld assignment" and "preservation of family cohesion" for failure to meet duties in a way that Overwatch deems adequate.

You just know the Combine banned all forms of identity and religion to add salt into their wounds too. Anything that can give a citizen hope is rebellion in of itself.

I would bet thought that if Half Life 3 is ever made that certain groups will be fully represented in the remnants of humanity compared to others.
Considering how they booted the original VA for Alyx in her titular game for someone who only got the role for being the same race as the character(a common occurrence in the industry now), I wouldn't doubt it. Valve takes "advice" from SBI and friends just like every other dev studio, plus the culture around the office definitely changed from the late 2000s.

I would only hope not.

Was it ever revealed as to why they booted her in the first place? iirc it had something to do with her being too old or having an "aggressive" performance. I'd imagine those performances we're made before the major story rewrites too.

I just said it, she wasn't black enough to be the VA. Probably one of SBI's suggestions to Valve they blindly took. Very disrespectful, if you ask me, doesn't paint a pretty picture for HL3 if it ever comes out.

I don't know if I buy that heavily into all the SBI stuff when it comes to Valve, not to say that they are above it. Having played Alyx and Deadlock they don't play into that crap at all really. At the end of the day I think Valve just want to make games.

I prefer to be optimistic about it all. Enough pessimism regarding this series anyways.
