I have a hard time seeing how anyone with the required literacy and personal discipline to actually establish a basic competency in Thomistic philosophy would also find anything to do with Nick and AF compelling at all.

The level of immaturity required to even buy into their banter on social media strongly implies that the young men who do so probably don’t have the strongest sense of identity and supplement their waning sense of self with belonging to the AF community. I struggle to even imagine some guy out there setting down his Etienne Gilson and picking up his phone to weigh in on wifejack memes.

My guess is that these guys wanted to be a part of AF first and then decided they were going to present as pious philosophy Bros as their contribution to the community. I don’t think honest conviction in the Roman Catholic faith has anything to do with their participation. How could it?

They’re rootless young men kinda like Nick who’ve adopted a caustic nihilism that clouds their ability to actually see any good or beauty in the world. I can say that’s a lot of young men these days, rootless, but I can happily say there are plenty of us who are rediscovering something to root us, and many who want to try to bring something good into the world despite the risk. I believe the latter will prevail.
