KR South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities

Article | Archive

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

The lefties on bluesky are fearmongering about this, claiming that Trump is going to do the same here in the U.S. despite all of the laws against it.

Why are people thinking the Norks are going to do something? Aside of maybe some minor provocations (maybe more trash balloons or some shelling in one of those small contested islands that litter the Korean peninsula) they are not going to do anything. Major military activity is very noticeable, and as hermetic as the Best Korea can be, they still can't block the sky, so any movement will be spotted by satellites, whatever informants the Worst Korea has inside the north or by the sentries at the DMZ.

His policies are fine, long live King Yoon

Foreign Policy:
  • North Korea: Hardline approach, supports sanctions, open to preemptive defense if needed.
  • U.S.: Strengthen military alliance, more joint exercises, and defense cooperation.
  • China: Aims for mutual respect but less conciliatory.
  • Japan: Works to improve relations.
Domestic Policy:
  • Economy: Market-led reforms, deregulation, tax cuts on capital gains.
  • Gender: Opposes gender equality ministry, criticized for anti-feminist views.
  • Education/Health: Struggles with reforms, plans to increase medical student intake.
  • Housing: Plans for millions of new homes.
  • Proposes more government oversight of police.

How fucked is that nigger now?
Probably not as much as you’d think. Executing an American is a sure fire way to tick off the Yanks, whose backing will be needed.

The Norks would be retarded to do so as well. One shelling or case of usual chimpery would provide Yoon a "Wag the dog" opportunity to rationalize martial law.

Naver, Daum experience service disruptions after Yoon's martial law declaration
23:42 December 03, 2024
SEOUL, Dec. 3 (Yonhap) -- Naver, South Korea's leading Internet portal, experienced disruption in its service Tuesday following President Yoon Suk Yeol's unexpected martial law declaration.

Naver Cafe, the company's online community platform, has experienced connection disruptions from around 11 p.m. after Yoon's announcement was made at around 10:30 p.m.

"We are currently investigating whether this is due to a sudden surge in traffic," Naver said.

Similar issues were observed in services of Daum, the country's second-largest web portal. The company shared an emergency maintenance notice on the comment section of its news service.

The army is backing the president, so that means the US knew before hand days in advance and didn't send the CIA director to warn them off like they did here in my shithole against pulling a coup.

So i guess the US is supporting whatever this is.

So what makes him unpopular? Curious to see if Korea's CNN equivalent has a hate boner for him.

And what’s the alternative? It seems to me that the only alternative to forceful rule is letting leftists hamstring you and use constitutional parliamentary trickery to impede your every step. No one has disputed here that Yoon’s opposition are a bunch of leftists who are part of that weird feminist sex cult, so what’s the alternative? Autocracy or Communism? I will take autocracy.
It's a false dichotomy, just because you don't see other options doesn't mean they don't exist. It might take an especially talented leader and a mountain of work to make any alternative solution plausible, but it is always a possibility. Never let anyone convince you otherwise, there's nothing good in being pigeonholed into choosing between which rope to hang oneself with.

What you're saying is no different from commies who wants to flip social hierarchy upside down and vaporize existing institutions. The end result is more or less the same.
Probably derailing the thread with this, so nuff said.
