It looks like it was 5 th setting, which means that there were 4 trials set ahead of it and Dave was only going if the other 4 don't go (they could maybe do like 2 trials at once, but they dont have many divisions.). Those cases are likely either older/on a speedy trial writ, or have an in custody defendant. Dave's trial will be a low priority and continuing it ahead of time is a courtesy to the subpoenaed witnesses as much as anything. They probably had word that one or more of the cases ahead were ready for trial. I've never done a jury trial in Columbia, but doing all the pretrial stuff Monday/Tuesday would explain the weird Wednesday trial start.
