KR South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

Yoon is doing everything not to be impeached. It's quite concerning for the military in a democratic country to maintain martial law when the majority of the assembly from both parties denounced it and voted to end it.
If we're being technical, the mechanism to end the martial law REQUIRES the president to end it. The soldiers really are doing nothing wrong by waiting. It's about all they can do as pawns.

Considering the trigger pullers in modern countries all range from 18-20, not a single one of them can remember a time in their life when anime wasn't a thing.

This isn't even just SK. The Taliban were tossing dakimakuras out of the US barracks in Kabul and there's been a couple body pillows spotted on tanks in Ukraine.
Have you seen the programming for Kids the western media is putting out these days? It's no wonder parents and kids switched to Anime.

Well, yes, but that's only a coincidence. What I really want is 3 countries on the peninsula. NK, SK and SSK. Or, alternatively, NK, Middle Korea and South Korea.
Politically South Korea is split east and west.

This is the result of the election earlier this year, Red is the President's Party.

So have we gone from "It's happening" to "nothing ever happens" in a few hours? Why is everything from South Korea a cheaper and more boring knock off of things other countries do better? Even their coups are boring.
President of South Korea declares martial law, his opposition in the South Korean legislature unanimously votes 190-0 (300 members in total in the legislature by the way) to end the decree and now military officials say only the president can end it. That is the situation as it stands right now.

i'm surprised he's not taking more drastic measures at this stage.
Maybe he's trying to bide his time or negotiate non-interference from Washington. I think that if the US wasn't so caught off guard about this things would be moving a lot quicker. But apparently Biden is in Angola and the State Dept. had no clue this was coming.

I think at this point he has to stand firm unless he loses military backing completely. It's his only hope to not end up in prison.
I think it may have been a miscalculation to tell all the guys with guns that they're going to jail and not just the officers principally responsible for their orders.
