KR South Korean president declares emergency martial law, accusing opposition of anti-state activities

Article | Archive

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

A helicopter landed on their parliament building.
I didn't see that, when did that happen?
I think it may have been a miscalculation to tell all the guys with guns that they're going to jail and not just the officers principally responsible for their orders.
Yeah although maybe the military will interpret it as them being like for those who keep doing it. Idk. Also I mean unless this is just a small part of the military supporting the coup well then they'll have to let most of them go.
Before I declare my support for either faction, what are their positions on Israel?
I doubt either side has anything really drastic to say about the issue.

Surely he would’ve known they’d vote to block martial law. What’s he going to do now? “Whoa, sorry guys. Big misunderstanding. My bad. See at work tomorrow.” A helicopter landed on their parliament building.
The plan seems to have been to block Members of Parliament from being able to vote but they failed. No nobody knows what to do next. High comedy.

It's really up to the military now and everybody will then know they don't really live in a democracy there.

They should've secured parliament first. Maybe delay announcing it to the public until you do that. Timing is critical in coups. Honestly if I was the President I'd just outright declare the vote to be invalid and send in the military.

I always forget how "recent" South Korea became "Democratic". I always assumed straight after the Korean War the U.S. pushd it into a Democracy but oh no.. I was wrong.
It was pretty much constant military-derived dictatorship until late 1980s, with only short periods of weak and unstable civilian governments. It really wasn't any different than Cold War South America, only minus communist insurgencies (generally communism was contained in North Korea, and not really popular in SK). Down to suspected CIA role of assassination of Park Chung Hee, most prominent gook president (fun fact - like all successful gook politicians, he was a massive weeb Japan Respecter™, down to normalizing relations with Japs for the first time since WW2)

Or at least command the military drag them before they could vote. Bad optics but could it get worse?

Yeah hopefully they commit to seeing this through. If the coup fails then the feminists will entrench themselves even further into power.
the gook feminist dichotomy is overstated and overhyped. most people don't care about 4b and certainly not south of seoul. koreans in general aren't political because modern politics is full of graft and corruption on top of the fact that they're a new democracy. those big korean protests and riots happened because of policies that directly affected the protesters, contrast that with america where people protest because its hip and virtue signals.
You can't just say "yeah martial law is over go home" via vote. You have to enforce it with arms and men.

President Yoon has some of that, but I don't see the opposition mobilizing anyone. Good luck enforcing your whims with strong language and hope.
it's over. the military went home, all parties voted no, the president will get impeached and he's going to be thrown in jail for his other corruption charges.

I thought the military stayed and is still following orders until president lifts it?

Have you seen the programming for Kids the western media is putting out these days? It's no wonder parents and kids switched to Anime.
I haven't and I'm glad, but even the anime has degenerated into shit like Fate instead of based stuff like Bleach and Outlaw Star.

Kids these days are growing up with zero appreciation for tan-skinned tomboys.

You should look into when Taiwan actually became democratic if you want to risk a heart attack.

Spoiler: It wasn't until after the fall of the USSR.
The AP’s live stream is hilarious and I wish I was recording. They are playing soft and catchy Korean music on speakers as you can hear people screaming in the background.
Mostly peaceful protesting or something?

Bad optics but could it get worse?
Yes. The worst thing is to have it fail, even if you have great optics.

Look man I just like the current president and think he'd make a fine dictator. That's why I support the coup.
