Not going to disagree with you, because I'm also not sure, but mobile coverage in the US seems very spotty (depending on carrier):

I don't know exactly what route/areas they drove in, but judging from the map/website above, it looks like some of the highways have only 4G/4G+/5G in certain areas - the stream didn't just cut for a few minutes but seemed to be totally unavailable for hours at a time so I don't think it was just a case of slightly spotty coverage.

But for sure, a paid/turnkey solution like that streaming backpack would probably do way better than whatever they were using. Starlink is possibly even better though, but if you're doing something like this with thousands of people watching (i.e. thousands of potential customers) you probably want the Starlink as well as the backpack and a dedicated person who just deals with the streaming shit.

edit: I'm also guessing based on what has been said that they relied on mobile phones for the "modem". You probably really want a dedicated, expensive 5G modem instead of a phone with multiple antennas and shit like that. Modern phones are great but they overheat and aren't designed to run at 100% usage.
phone coverage sperging
that map is just made of people running nperf submitting their gps coordinates via the app and reporting the signal quality. It doesn't really account for the areas around the roads they drive on though hence is looks very similar to the map of interstates an highways. with the exception being cities of course. A lot of america is just country. Also nPerf doesn't really say how many people they have running it "Thousands every day" and that is worldwide. They haven't even pubilshed a single study relating to the United States ( https://www.nperf.com/en/publications-list )
Heres a couple of other maps all lined up for comparison
first one is the highway system
second one is nperf that you posted earlier
the third one is verizon from the FCC in 2021 https://www.fcc.gov/BroadbandData/MobileMaps/mobile-map
the fourth one is from the FCC in 2024 and shows verizon 4G https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home (click map providers -> mobile broadband -> verizon 4G LTE)
cellcoverage2.png
excuse my sperging but there is a lot of coverage even if its shit tier and not capable of streaming. using multiple sims from multiple providers can provide relatively seemless streaming though on the highways.
I'm sure if i did the map a few more times with the other providers you'd notice some gaps from some that others pick up even though they do allow each other to share towers priority is given to users on that network from my understanding.

Wiggers are east-coasters, better coverage over there. Would not be surprised if they hadn't anticipated middle-America having only LTE on the highways.
I don't really think they anticipated anything, after all them jumping in an RV wasn't really well planned ahead of time.

If I were in production (and I have some experience in this area which is why I can write this all with 100% confidence) I would've done the following - and keep in mind they probably had 3-4 days and at minimum 48h in which they knew they were going to be going in an RV and livestreaming inside of it:
  • Ok the plan is we're going in an RV for the next week (at least)
    • Immediately get a PA/myself and do some research on mobile/starlink coverage on the route we're going along - you can find this shit on google in 30 seconds. Make a list/note which carriers have the best reception.
    • Get a PA/myself to research internet access on RVs - try and find one that has a satellite internet setup or starlink already
      • Tell a PA to call up every single RV rental company nearby and ask about internet access - do they have a setup? do they know about setups? do they have one we could rent for 2 weeks?
    • Get a PA/myself to find out if there are any film rental companies that have equipment especially for this
    • Get a PA/myself to find out if there are any specialists in this area who have all the equipment to do this shit straight away
      • there 100% are - I have seen people whose job it is is just to set up infrastructure for livestreaming events
      • these niggas will probably charge a fortune, so ask if you can just rent equipment fo rit
    • Google faggots who post online about their fancy ass RV which has a starlink on it or people who are selling one - "hey we want to rent your RV for a week or two, are you down?"
    • if "oh shit we can't get the main RV with starlink/too expensive/will take too long" happens?
      • Can we set it up on a tail car and use it as a moving wifi hotspot?
    • Within the first 3 hours of this you/your PAs should've sent out like 20-30 emails at minimum and called a whole bunch of people.
  • If you can't get a specialist/turnkey solution then do both of these straight away...
    • Send a PA out to bestbuy/whatever the fuck - here's $1000 go buy 2-3 5G modems and some SIM cards from the 2-3 best carriers. Spend a few hours on research first.
    • Send a PA to go buy a starlink for cash in hand (get them to do research on whether it will work on a caravan first) - that shit is only like $1000 or some shit
  • Immediately also start thinking "fuck we're having coverage issues so people are going to be watching literal nothing for hours at a time, if this has happened on the first day, then it is going to be an ongoing issue"
    • "hey - who is that editor we used last time? yeah him, call him up and tell him we need him for the next week. We're going to dump footage on him every 6 hours and he needs to edit highlight clips that we can put on stream whenever we have downtime"
    • "ok we need to think about how we can do some creative stuff with TTS/monetization during this travel period"
The problem with all of the above is:
  • You need the foresight to do all this before problems start happening or as soon as they start happening
    • You do not get this foresight except from lived experience (which is the hard way of learning it
    • You certainly do not learn this level of foresight unless you have super proactive people on your team who already have experience with this shit - you need to work with some people who are the best at what they do. Hint: usually they're going to be a fair bit older, charge a bit more and be cynical fuckers about the world and their job. But they're great fun to chill with when the shit hits the fan.
      • Basically - the next time they do a fishtank season they should hire a somewhat seasoned expert to just be there and help with shit like this. Ideally they should hire an actual producer and let Jet/Sam Hyde/Ben run the show and give shit for the producer to sort out. The benefit of hiring a pro is that they can give bullshit to them like this and expect to get actual results very quickly.
  • You need to have experienced failure and experienced situations where you learn how to deal with shit like this very quickly
  • You need to be hyperfocused on communication - if you know there is a problem that needs solving but you don't talk about it and delegate it effectively then it is never going ot be solved.
  • They're based out of Rhode Island which I believe is not really set up for this kind of shit in the first place.
    • The industry catering to what they're doing is probably extremely small, but at the same time all of their setup for Bloodgames etc seems like it was homebrew so they probably haven't even made any contacts in the local industry to begin with.
      • If they had actually rented equipment and shit locally then they could literally just call up the rental house and be like "yo niggas, its Sam Hyde here, remember I rented all that shit from you last year? we're in a pickle here, we need a livestreaming setup, we're going to have an RV on the road for a week and we need a solution for livestreaming/internet access - do you have any ideas?" and then they could probably skip everything I mentioned earlier.
  • You need quite a bit of "fuck around" budget and you can't be a fucking cheapass with shit like this. You're going to have to buy stupid shit that might not work or never even get used and will either end up as e-waste or have to be sold for a very heavy discount once you're done with it
  • You need people who are dependable and can sort all this shit out
    • Any producer worth their weight should have dependable crew around them in the first place that they can give a list of shit like this and expect answers/results within a few hours
    • Ideally they shouldn't even have to go into as much detail as I've laid out earlier - they should jusy say the words "RV + livestreaming + internet access + we're leaving in 48 hours" and the dependable crew should be able to hear those few words and get straight to fucking work getting answers/potential solutions and then get final approval from the producer.
  • If you're already in an RV that has left, you need to be able to time shit so you can actually get the equipment there.

And if all the above seems like super mega autistic levels of detail/care that's because they're in the business of running a 24/7 livestreamed show. Any time the stream goes down they are effectively shooting themselves in the foot and losing both attention/interest/trust and most importantly: money.

As an example:
  • Mark Zuckerberg has always has an autistic obsession for Facebook to basically never have downtime: https://nymag.com/news/features/mark-zuckerberg-2012-5/ / https://archive.ph/lMvJA
    • "He made “uptime” a huge early priority, only rolling out Facebook to new schools when he was certain that the company’s servers and software could handle the traffic load. These steps sound like no-brainers, but they trip up a lot of technology start-ups. Stanford’s predecessor to Facebook, for example, was so complicated that it never really caught on. Friendster grew so fast that its infrastructure got swamped: People wanted to log on, but they couldn’t. A year later, when Friendster finally fixed the problem, its U.S. users were gone."
  • On almost any traditional broadcast media (ratio/TV) downtime of a few minutes will probably end up in people getting fired - you absolutely cannot have downtime/"dead air" whatsoever: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_air
    • "Many broadcasters install a silence detector independently operating from their broadcasting headquarters. In the event of dead air lasting more than an acceptable duration, e.g. ≤ −70 dB and (if applicable) static/no picture for 30 seconds, an emergency program is cued."

If I were in production (and I have some experience in this area which is why I can write this all with 100% confidence) I would've done the following
I don't know what the structure is with Sam and crew, but it's not skilled professionals.

He surrounds himself with fans, and some of these fans are skilled in their respective areas. But they are not industry professionals with any kind of experience.

I also suspect he does not pay most of them in a consistent or meaningful way.

This creates volatility and a "fuck it lol" culture.

Unless Jet and Ben buy their entire wardrobes off DHGate, they're getting paid well.

The truth is they're just immature retards who have no idea how lucky they got and how well they have it so they're perfectly happy fucking things up and trolling fans because they just assume they're going to keep coming back no matter what.

Tried to explain Fishtank to a guy I am sweet on today, and I just wanna say: don't make my mistake.
OH GOD DID ANYONE CATCH THE MAN RUNNING ACROSS THE STREET WHEN HE APPROACHED HIM FOR MONEY JUST NOW? KINO AF! I'm recording it all! No worries!

Burt got his first tip!

"FAN MONEY DOESN'T COUNT BURT."
Thanks, man. Work has been crazy so I can't even keep up with the fish when the thread is slow-moving nowadays. Looking forward to catching up on your clips eventually. Clip king. :heart-full:

There is definitely a tangible air of a sort of echochamber and "yes man" energy, not only within production but also within the fanbase. It's actually cancerous to look at the fishtank.live chat due to the amount of dicksucking. It's nearly noon and there are no cameras on, service outages have made the past few days unwatchable, and production has been dropping the ball multiple times throughout the show and disregarding general audience opinion. Still very few people actually complaining. Just very strange to me, and it makes for a show that's degrading in quality to the point its depressing. It's impressive that even with a contestant like Burt the show is still shitting its pants.

Really? I've checked a few times today and chat seems to be shitting on it hard.

Honestly the best thing would be for everyone to just go away and let it die off in a shallow unmarked grave. Jeff style.

I don't know what brands they are wearing but that isn't indicative of much at all. We all know people who live from paycheck to paycheck with $80k trucks.

It's usually just a sign of being stupid with money and credit.

They're crypto rich. They launched an NFT project (mondo megabits) and Jet/Sam Hyde were pretty early on crypto. If they stashed away some of it then they're possibly already at retirement level rich or very comfortable financially already (but that can disappear in moments depending on the market)

Just for archival purposes: after arriving and doing an activity on Vegas they ended the steam saying they would be back in about an hour. It is almost 3pm Eastern, and ~noon in Vegas.
The only update I've seen was posted by Sam just now on Twitter.

My expectations are rock bottom.

Interesting, had no idea. I subbed for exactly one month to Hyde on Gumroad to get access to the PGL episodes. The platform was fucking garbage so I canceled immediately. I suspected that could not be the way they are kept afloat.

Is this the zany looking late 90s aesthetic card shit I've seen them working on some stream clips? I figured they were way late to the NFT party.

Jet mass-banned "doomposters" (anyone criticizing the quality of the show) in the main site chat about a week ago. I don't think they will unlock chat privileges again until after the season. I think it was during the day of the whole Binx/Ling Ling debacle but I can't recall.

I am a pretty big fan of Sam and not ashamed to say this is pathetic. I think as soon as they were able to have some breathing room with the cams off, it created a huge amount of complacency with all of them. This has been terrible. They clearly don't give a shit about the audiences time.

Just as I say that, they go live. Try to redeem yourselves guys.
