South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an “emergency martial law,” Tuesday accusing the country’s opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing. He declared the step as critical for defending the country’s constitutional order. It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy.

Yoon since taking office in 2022 had struggled to push his agendas against an opposition-controlled parliament.

I'm so fucking pissed that they did. Goddamnit why didn't they open fire!
shooting your own unarmed countrymen is not as easy as it sounds, we are talking about human beings here at the end of the day. Despite what the edgelords have to say the best case scenario played out with the least violence.

Why start this mess only to puss out when it gets tough? I hope he enjoys prison.
Someone in the US probably said it's either lifting the martial law or they and the opposition will fuck him and the rest of loyalists into oblivion. The military had the privilege of showing up and waiting it out without clearly committing to anything. The US didn't have to publicly take a stance on the martial law either. Everyone but the SK president (who is now politically radioactive) is happy with the resolution.

Aight I know we all saw he said its over but ive been watching the livestream ALLNIGHT and im just now seeing cops with riot shields and a suspicious amount of people running places, not saying anything concrete but just seems odd, the police are all still moving with such purpose.

the military was weighing whether another gwanju massacre would pillory the country again.

Can someone explain to me who the "civilians" that are pushing back the police are on the side of? Are they Anti-President?

Why is it the police and not the military?
