UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fatally shot outside Hilton hotel in Midtown in targeted attack: cops - Just Part and Parcel of visiting a Big City

I'm gonna be real, if someone walked up to me and said "here's $200 million a year, be our ceo", fuck it, I'd do it. Most people would. They got paid enough to become expendable.
Implying they offer up the role of CEO for a multibillion dollar corporation to random people off the street.
Have a look at Mexico and some Southern American places that have a history of the last 5 mayors being assassinated.

The only real way for these companies to fix this is to either change the way they do business (not going to happen) or to change the structure of the company such that there is no CEO/head role anymore and direct responsibility can be eschewed from any single person and instead be blamed on a board of like 20-30 people.

BREAKING:
Authorities have identified a suspect in the Manhattan Assassination Case. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Samuel Whitcomb Hyde (39) of Fall River, MA. Authorities were initially tipped off by a social media post made by Hyde two days prior to the assassination, in which he uploaded a picture of himself and another individual. In the post Hyde claimed United Healthcare failed to pay for a friend's medical bill after going to the hospital to receive treatment for congestive heart failure. He also stated in the post "United Healthcare will be sorry for taking my friend away from me."

Translation: You would be paid $200m/year to fire off emails on UnitedHealthCare's behalf.
I could imagine that getting boring after a while...
I'd be rich so I couldn't care. I just would have to try and not die to 9mm.

My point is they're not going to run our of people to be CEO. Nothing will change because the person that comes after this is getting paid enough to get shot at and not care. That's his job. It is how it is.

Oh man, earning two-hundred million dollars a year to write tripe on LinkedIn is so boring. I think I'll go for a walk. The hustle and bustle of the big city always cheers me up!

I prefer to be hopeful and think this will be the new Arab Spring except with less glowies and French.

Just 9.1 million... stop the presses. He's still richer than the poorest African nations.

Well if we are selling our soul and risking our loved ones lives, I’d personally need more than $9.1

CEOs legally have to work to maximize shareholder value.
This is a bit of a canard that is thrown out all too frequently. Does a sheep farmer maximize profit by sheering and slaughtering his flock in his first year? No, you shear them for many years. Toyota built a reputation for reliability by selling solid cars that would last for a decade, which in turn earns repeat purchases and good will with potential customers.

What people miss about the health care/insurance industry, is that it is an EXTREMELY government regulated market. It is practically entirely government controlled limited monopolies. Between how much money the government dumps into the system, and how they specifically regulate hospital business activities (how many hospital beds they are allowed, etc), it in no way represents a free market place. Thanks Obama!

I don't know. I don't like seeing anyone die. I bet a lot of gamers on here would pretty upset if Gaben got shot. Maybe people should have more value for human life but that's a pretty bold ask nowadays I guess.

I don't, on the whole, celebrate death.

I'm not, on the whole, anti-capitalist.

But insurance companies have every opportunity to... not be evil, and they willingly choose the path they walk.

I won't say they can't do it. But I will not pretend to not hate them for it.

I agree.

However, before being CEO he probably had a job that was already rewarding him plentifully, I don't really know but I assume so. In such case, maybe you would not choose to take that position, because you already have enough money.

I'd take the job, just so that maybe I could change some things/negligence/unfairness if I can, even if as an experiment. If I get thrown out over that, at least I can put that I was a CEO on my résumé! 👍

I wasn't surprised this happened in Manhattan. There was another CEO or business guy assassinated in New York I wanna say like last year but I forgot the name.
New York is about to pass even more gun control laws.

He was not making anywhere near $200/mil per year. His total earnings including salary/stocks/etc was like $9.1 million last year.
The poor thing. Practically destitute.
Start your own company or quit crying.
You literally cannot, without at a bare minimum hundreds of millions of dollars of backing, and that’s for a regional company who is allowed to discriminate their clientele. This is not a “just make your own thing” instance, and if you’re a user on this fucking site of all places, you should know better than to say “just make your own x”. Otherwise, go tell Null to make his own Internet if he wants to have a functional website and see how well that works for you.
