This is a bit of a canard that is thrown out all too frequently. Does a sheep farmer maximize profit by sheering and slaughtering his flock in his first year? No, you shear them for many years. Toyota built a reputation for reliability by selling solid cars that would last for a decade, which in turn earns repeat purchases and good will with potential customers.

What people miss about the health care/insurance industry, is that it is an EXTREMELY government regulated market. It is practically entirely government controlled limited monopolies. Between how much money the government dumps into the system, and how they specifically regulate hospital business activities (how many hospital beds they are allowed, etc), it in no way represents a free market place. However, before being CEO he probably had a job that was already rewarding him plentifully, I don't really know but I assume so. In such case, maybe you would not choose to take that position, because you already have enough money.

I'd take the job, just so that maybe I could change some things/negligence/unfairness if I can, even if as an experiment. If I get thrown out over that, at least I can put that I was a CEO on my résumé!
