I don't hate the aesthetics they chose for these games. But rather the execution of it. Taking for example the game listed earlier in the thread. .45 parabellum bloodhound. I don't hate the idea behind the game. I rather enjoyed Parasite Eve and wouldn't mind playing a spiritual successor to it. But many are so anachronistic. If your going to implement this, one should limit themselves to the hardware of the time. Of course laziness is the answer. Why limit your tri-count and texture size, then spend hours making and texturing a model that could feasibly run on a Sega Saturn when you can go into an asset store and grab a filter that does half the work for you. For a few examples a good friend of mine has had a side hobby for the last 12 years designing a game targeting the Dreamcast. A semi-survival horror adventure game. Getting an x41 to run kalistiOS for a devkit was a pain initially. It's evolved into him programming his own engine for him to achieve what he wants to see implemented in the game. That's the kind of effort I would want to see in these sloporamas. Then again it wouldn't be slop at that point. At best impressively autistic slop.
I enjoy the quality of early 3D rendering. Sure I could spin up blender and take a quarter of the time making a scene. But it doesn't look or feel correct. So I'll hop on my g3 iMac, run lightwave 3D and torture myself for a few hours. Telling myself one day I'll make that stupid point and click adventure game and have some desperate theater kids act out scenes for me. As long as it all fits on a single CD or five, lol. All of this to say limitation breeds creativity.
Of course the additional problem is that many are obsessively horny idiots shoving their perverted ideas into the game. Ruining the presentation entirely. It's all so tiresome.. this is a fad frankly, and will pass with time. Which makes me wonder what lazy """"developers"""" will attach themselves to next.

I know how you feel bro, I do a lot of software rendering shenanigans for the funsies and try to get it running nicely on old dogshit hardware. You don't necessarily have to limit yourself to the hardware of the time though, just making some actual effort to make it authentic (i.e. limiting palette, using multiple depth buffers to simulate old ps1 triangle sorting etc).
this is a fad frankly, and will pass with time.
It's just the next stage, remember ten years ago where every indie game was a pixel retro platformer (usually in a mismatched resolution with varying sizes of assets)? Now they're all blocky first-gen 3D type titles. I'm just waiting for the PS2 revival era, though that may be a bit too high effort for these people

I also like PSX graphics and the Y2K aesthetic, the problem is the kind of people who usually create things with that style.

I think writing sexual assault is one of the hardest things to do in modern media. You can't really ignore it whilst having violence and murder be ok because it puts on a weird pedestal, it's also something that unfortunately DOES happen.
You also can't do too much of it because then it comes off as cheap and/or glorifying, which is weird. You also can't be too graphic since it is very off-putting/upsetting to a lot of audiences.

Ironically, I think that goblin slayer did a decent job of including it as it made the goblins stand apart from your standard bad guy by making them absolutely despicable.
As others in the thread have said, I wouldn't have picked up on that theme from mouthwashing if I hadn't already heard about it already.

Decent game. Don't quite get the hype but I'm glad that someone else enjoys that one frame from Evangelion as much as I do.
Funny, I was watching this video about a game called My Eyes Deceive that also falls under "less than stellar" execution for sexual assault.
Ignoring the fact the video was made by a Essay faggot, it brings up how you're kinda strung along for the ride of what you are doing, until the end where in one of two endings you're hit with the "revelation" (in quotes because it's pretty obvious) your dad was assaulting you and made you pregnant. The other ending is escaping confinement and staring at the sun since you never saw it growing up stuck in the basement. Frankly I don't know why this youtuber bothered disecting this specific game and not other examples of poor shock value executions, the damn game was based off of a Reddit /twosentencehorror story, so that should really tell you the amount of thought and work put into it.
If you want a horror game that does this concept way better, check out Dreaming Mary, symbolism and setting is great.

Mouthwashing is an ugly little indie slop game with nothing to recommend it. "Ooh what if it was like Le PSX" how original. If it was a free game uploaded to itch.io it would be rightfully considered just another faux-retro slop indie horror game that would get a few barely watched Youtube videos made about it and then what people actually paid it any mind would forget about it, but because it's a game on Steam you have to pay for, just like a Big Boy Game, people are giving it sloppy figurative BJs for no reason. Plus it doesn't help that the people singing it's praises the loudest are the sort of weirdos who act like movies are real and bad things shouldn't happen to characters because they act like fictional characters are real persons.

Mouthwashing
I watched the whole thing on YouTube when it wasn't even that big yet, and I never even even thought it would become so popular, since the game is just boring. There is not much gameplay/story wise reason for it even being 3d or retro, as they call it, in the first place.

Besides, Mouthwashing is just so grossly gay. If I didn't know any better, I would assume the plot was written by a fujoshi with a boner for rapists, since they gobble up the cope "he is a woman abuser but that's because he is secretly in love with a man, so now he's tragic and hot uwu". But I guess the author is just a faggot himself.

The only female character is a literal sacrificial lamb on the altar of faggotory, she doesn't do shit and dies to characterize the male rapist. These fandom bitches whine about how much they hate Jimmy for what he had done and then immediately make a 5k fanfics and porn art on their NSFW accounts about him assaulting the captain guy "romantically". If he was just like Anya, female, it wouldn't have happened, and Jimmy would not have been so stealthfuly liked. All those pooners and other weirdos would cancel the author immediately. In fact, the whole game would not have been as popular if not for this fanon interpretation of the supposed most evil person in the entire existence. Gay rapists added to games make aaaall the money, I guess. The hypocrisy of these damaged women is unreal.

Ah, the memories
Good news everyone!

Wait, no. Bad news everyone. We have been rejected by Valve again.
We are now two days from release. Valve has frivolously rejected our launch for the third time.
Their first issue was that the "Huge Combat Level could not be found", an issue that arose from them testing for less than 30 minutes and not being able to exit the tutorial. This was resolved when we fed them console commands. Annoying, but understandable; unfortunately this process took over a week.
The second reason has to do with our game's subject matter. Our protagonist's journey is motivated by a past traumatic event involving sexual assault. For this reason, we chose to disclose both in-game and on the store page that there was mature content, and that the player would be allowed to opt out of direct references. Direct references include, in the current EA build, a sequence where the player views one of their attackers doing the deed from the first person perspective.
We were disappointed by how many games depict sexual assault as being gratifying and arousing, so we chose to depict it as simply disgusting and revolting. The sequence involves an emaciated, wrinkled alien creature bobbing up and down while licking the camera. This, to us, is so disgusting that it required advance warning and an option to disable the content.
Well, according to Valve, this is not sufficiently explicit to be a reference to sexual assault. So they rejected our build again.
Currently we are removing the content warning, which we feel is very wrong. Unfortunately, even doing this, there's a very good chance the build review will not pass before launch day.
For the past 3 years we've been working extremely long days to deliver this game to you. As you might know, we are only two people, so it's been an absolutely wild amount of work to meet all the deadlines. We are deeply sorry to delay again. Hope you'll still be with us once Valve decides we can finally be available on the store.

Better Luck Next Time,
-Team Fortune

Didn't actually play it but "an emaciated, wrinkled alien creature bobbing up and down while licking the camera" has to be quite the sight

Absolute kek, somebody out there has a file named "alienrape1stperson.mp4".

You can just have one of the characters, male or female just go "those fucking aliens rape women!" and that would suffice, you could add an extra line and or two where the main character mentions that they were once caught by an alien. The player can do the rest of the dot connecting by themselves.

Mouthwashing's fairly alright in my opinion. The game itself doesn't show any pozzification, the characters are decently written, and the overall concept's pleasantly dark and grim. I think the ending with Jimmy and Curly, specifically at the dinner table, was a bit excessive and tried going for shock value more than benefitting the story, though other than that particularly odd scene the rest of it was very good.

Is it $10 good? No. Whole thing lasts a couple hours, and is basically a visual novel more than a game. If it was, say, $8 or $5 then I'd recommend buying it, but at $10 it's worth either pirating it or watching a video explaining the story.

Fandom can also be a bit cancerous (most are tbf), but from my brief experience with it they seem okay. The element of completely avoiding using Jimmy's name has led to some particularly funny moments like J Diddy, and is a harmless funny bit imo.

Fandom can also be a bit cancerous
Certainly one of the most cancerous afflictions a piece of media can receive. Constant need to have every bit of "lore" needlessly explained in minute detail for no real gain. Constant hounding by fans to add or ask for superfluous additions or political bs into it. I despise it. They can't leave anything to their imagination or their own thoughts on the piece. More often than not just being fed by YouTube listicles and DEEP DIVE EXPLAINED videos. Off topic but it annoys me. Many of these types of games in the thread can develop these problems in a vain attempt to make the game seem deeper and more thought out than it typically is.

Buckshot Roulette is fine. Game is clever enough.

Cruelty Squad's dev is a pretentious retardo leftoid that looks like he's one bad day away from kissing a shotgun. He reads and looks insufferable.

Randy stair is that you?
>I was listening to a live video of this game while I was drawing, and the moment I saw Anya, I thought she was cute
Twitter trannies:
"Anya got RAPED! You're sexualizing a RAPE victim! My 3d model godess has been trough much, with the RAPE and all. How could you draw her sexualized when she was RAPED by Jimmy? Did you even play mouthwashing? Maybe if you did you wouldn't find Anya cute, you'd find Anya RAPED!"
what the hell is their obsession with rape? for fucks sake People in my life got sent away to therapy and mental illness hospitals for much less back in the day and now glorification of a truly heinous crime is just thrown around like
This is why it's important to keep your games gatekept or straight up underground. Any time it gets popular, it'll only consider these hyper sensitive blokes who can't separate fiction from reality and act like a fiction, 2D character's a worst rapist than actual rapists that exist in front of us without any of us even knowing.

I hate the modern horror audience than I hate modern horror itself. Again, they all act the same. Any time a fandom gets big, everyone does the same thing. Everyone speaks in Tumblr. Everyone makes the same "inserting your comfort character in a meme/situation/what would they do/eat/tier list/etc" images, all of it. You could tell me Mouthwashing originated from Tumblr and I'd believe you dead on.

For any Kiwis here who plan to publicly post a game someday, please gatekeep it or do whatever to keep these sort of sensitive "horror fans" from it, preferably a thousand feet away.
I hate them too, it seems though the best way to write horror these days is by going full on classic: haunted houses, spiders, and vampires. The troons are always trying to 1 up themselves in “OrIGInaLitY” so something more mainstream almost repels them, shit, some of these people are secretly too scared to watch things like the conjuring by saying its “cliche”
so when they want something more avant- garde show em’ marilyn Manson’s music videos and they’ll refuse those too, they’re afraid of everyon else‘s definition of “horror” so they make thier own. And they like psycological horror because it makes them seem smarter even though They probably dont get it either and make up theories and half of that is because many psychlogical horror writers are so damn lazy they keep it vague so they don’t need to write a good answer.
You need but one word to forever banish all mentally ill secondaries, troons and even Americans from anything you produce, tactically placed in the title where it will be most obvious, and all entirely for free and without any effort:
Nigger.
no, no need to do that just call a girl character “fat”

cryptic pregnancy is terrifying but I just cant take dreaming mary‘s tranime cutesy aesthetic seriously. ddlc was great because it was the first of its cutesy but dark turn nature. The manlybadasshero slop is usually just a cheap imitation and the hope that the audience overthinks shit to be scary

Not really "retro" or "demake", but undoubtedly adjacent since there's an increasing amount of overlap between the troons who played Doom Eternal and the troons who make "retro" shovelware.

To call mouthwashing a visual novel is an insult to visual novels. To call it a walking simulator is an insult to walking simulators.
Edited to add: Despite being some of the least interactive genres of "games" around, there are legitimately good Visual Novels and Walking Simulators.

Take for example, Slay the Princess and the Stanley Parable, each a game I've enjoyed relatively recently. What makes a "game" like them good? It's the storytelling, obviously, but it's not enough to just tell a story, it has to make you think. By design they limit interactivity of gameplay and so the interaction must take place in the mind, on a more personal level. They thrive when they have something to say, and they do it without being preachy.

Slay the Princess and Stanley Parable are alike in that they're deconstructions of storytelling, though Slay the Princess is more literal while the Stanley Parable is more meta.

In STP you're quite literally trapped in a cycling time loop on multiple layers so that you can reconstruct your other half, a goddess of death who seeks to destroy the old world and begin life anew. What you actually do with each individual princess you deal with doesn't matter, it's the lessons learned that do, and what your interactions represent. The narrator constantly eggs you on to slay the princess as he knows what she is and is very afraid of dying, while the goddess, who you meet after every cycle reaches a logical conclusion, is insistent that death is natural and good. Ultimately, when she is rebuilt enough, you're left with the ultimate choice to slay her or join her. Be alone in godhood in a world without death, or be together in a world full of it. Ultimately the game never tells you the correct answer, it simply presents two opposing viewpoints and gives you options to decide for yourself. If you'd like, you could even just deny your godhood and leave with the princess, or let her destroy you and reset everything back to the beginning once again.

You probably all know what the Stanley Parable's deal is by now but if you don't, it's a game that presents similar choices in a similar format, you have your narrator and you can either obediently do as he asks, question nothing, and be presented with a short, slightly disappointing ending, or deny him and explore the meta narrative surrounding it. Through this, the game takes a magnifying glass to the idea of narratives in gaming altogether, bleaching every aspect from game design to player choice to sequels with the disinfectant power of sunlight if you'll pardon the clunky use of metaphor. Through the illusion of choice and the extreme focus it puts on every tiny action you take, it challenges the player to reconsider their relationship with stories and video games.

So what's the point of all this glazing for these two random games that aren't mouthwashing? Well, I bring them up because I see mouthwashing categorized into the same genres as them but mouthwashing isn't anything like them, it's like its own genre, a literal interpretation of the phrase "movie game", because that's what it is, a movie wearing the skin of a video game.

What does mouthwashing have to say? What does it invite me, the player, to think about, recontextualize, or reexamine about myself and/or the things I interact with? That rape is bad? That's true but it's not challenging. That having a shitty job with a bad employer sucks? Again, true, but what substance is there to saying that? Is it the mystery, is it challenging me to rethink what I know about the game itself? It surely can't be, it's painfully obvious you're the bad guy from the first 20 minutes.

It's an hour and 30 minutes of pointless drivel that challenges me only to keep my eyes open, and that's why it can't be either genre.

I think it almost always falls into EITHER 2 camps. People who were raped themselves, and have fucked up heads over it, often being really AGGRESSIVELY against the mention of anything shady which makes THEM think of their own trauma, even if its unreasonable (theres honestly a LOT of lesbians in this camp)

And people who are secretly VERY fucked up themselves, and so scream it the loudest, like if bubba copeland was screaming about cross-dressers in a sermon despite being one. This USED to happen with gays and stuff, but now I feel this tactic is done by more sick people. Scream rape the loudest so nobody will notice if you rape, type thing.

I also still don't believe they don't know about rule34 in which theres plenty of rape pictures, so this REALLY feels like the second one. An additional disgusting detail, some of these images put the focus on POST mutilation curly.
