Warhammer 40k

You’re also likely gonna get a kill team upgrade sprue. Be grateful your boring, imperfect legion got anything, those poor shattered legion and WE fuckers have nothing.
I’m still worried EC will just get an upgrade sprue kill team like Night Lords. They’re going to make all chaos space marine fans suffer (except black legion)

That would gatekeep my legion and be cheaper so I’d be happy. Bits are bits.

I’ve kitbashed an army so I don’t care. Tonight I’m sculpting skin cloaks and drilling metal rods into the backpacks for trophy spikes.

That sounds fucking sick, keep us posted.
Thanks, I love taking “baseline” marines like the nu-beakies and just fucking them up, CSM arms, trophies, spikes, personal curios, top knots, mutations, damage, the lost art of backpack banners, “chaos hoses” made from metal wire, field repairs/looted equipment and my personal favourite, sculpting those glorious ivory locks onto all these bald heads.

CSM have the biggest disconnect between models and art, which realistically you can’t do a model kit of ten where each guy has visibly walked his own path to damnation and is covered in chains, fur and skulls, I get that, but you read the books and look at the art and their kits kinda lack the heavy part of heavy metal.

But that’s what I wanted to do when I got into the hobby back in 2019, couldn’t make up my mind which warband/legion I wanted to do either, also lacked the skills.

When I got the Age of Darkness box and a ton of other kits I wanted for parts, I channeled the Iron Warriors tism and individualized most of guys. It’s a bitch to paint but fulfilling, I’m twenty marines in (painted and completed) and I can look at them individually and think “he’s got a story” even if that marine isn’t elaborate like the officers are, a guardsman head on a backpack, a shattered pauldron revealing the bare shoulder armor or a gouged out eye go miles for characterization.

Pretty sure they'll get something similar to Thousand Sons and World Eaters - custom legionnaires, termies, cultists and a couple of heroes.

That was my initial impression. The Krieg box is giving me hope this is the case BUT I can’t help but think they’ll do a small Kill Team thing especially after they did the new Death Guard kill team and did a new DG detachment.

I think they will be the smallest of the cult legion ranges, that’s a given, they aren’t an edition-launch faction like the DG were, they don’t have the mass-appeal the WE have and they don’t have the potential for cheap cross-line shenanigans the TS have.

I could see new CSM bikers coming alongside them though.

They’ll probably herald that range shakeup where Daemons lose their individual army status and get folded into their respective legions.

I'm interested in doing Iron Warriors as my Chaos legion. I have half a mind to just get stock Muhreens painted like IWs. I've seen models of them with spiky bits, and still don't think they look right.

Kitbashing my Kriegers is some of the most fun I've ever had building and painting.

late on this but god damn this explains a lot. KKR needs to come in and clean house. Absolutely retarded decision making preventing a 10x on the stock.
"KKR"? But yeah, that's so stupid and it makes so much sense, too. Tl;dr: GW's got internal teams and they are all in competition with each other and themselves. And each product has to be assigned to one (not multiple) teams. So if you have a faction that's in TOW, and in AoS, and a model kit comes out, who gets "credit" for it's sales? To simplify things, they just decided no faction or model kit should be in multiple product lines. The exception being Demons, and only because they really have no choice.

They're a big private equity firm. GW is operated so poorly that cleaning house and staffing it with PE ghouls would be better all around.

This setup is the most retarded response to an internal governance problem I've ever seen: pretend it doesn't exist, stop it from getting better, and avoid fat stacks of cash just sitting there.

See, you get it. Love that commissar.

I think you’re good mixing CSM, MKIII and the upcoming MKII. Maybe it’s the Honsou stuff but I like the idea of IW officers having the “standard” CSM armour while the cannon-fodder just get basic bitch shit that they either looted or have the STC for.

Like in place of the over-designed HQs that the CSM range has, I imagine an IW chosen looks like what would be a standard legionary to the BL.
IMG_5835.jpeg
That, or pilfering Mechanicus kits for bionics.

The legions all have flavour to their corruption, even the Undivided ones. IW were bolting Inductii into tanks during the Heresy and were well into using the warp as a gun by the end.
IMG_5712.jpeg
I’m saying you need to make a Daemonculaba, it’s essential to the IW experience.

after finishing space marine 2 I remembered I really liked the white panthers color scheme from waaaay back, then I looked it up if I could find the pictures again... only to stumble upon the "lore" and they really are turbo retards.

least I didn't paint any minis yet
:stress:
You dodged a bullet. That paint scheme would have been a pain. Black and white are hard colors to highlight, especially with how many alternating positions.

use some liquid masking tape and ur done with two colors of primer. maybe an oil wash/panel lining and some minor highlighting but this is a very simple scheme if you steal the tricks from gunpla

I've seen some sick Chaos Marines but hardly any beakies, what you're describing sounds sicker than what even GW dare to make.
I get that, but you read the books and look at the art and their kits kinda lack the heavy part of heavy metal.
Then you have the average Noise Marine...well when creative artists have their way with them.
also lacked the skills.
So how long did it reasonably take you to feel confident in your skills?

See, now that is what makes a good model painter. Some people care about how clean they want their model to be but who gives a fuck when they look like any other cleanly painted model. I'll take something with personality over something super clean.

It took me at least two years before I was genuinely happy with my work, I’m actually a raging perfectionist so “tabletop ready” has never been good enough.

Here’s four of my guys from my painting setup
IMG_5842.jpeg
So you can see what I’m going for, easy guy clearly thinks he’s the embodiment of perfection and their wargear isn’t at that 40k-level of over the top but it’s on-track.

Fun fact, the Raptors kit actually has chaos beakie heads, I didn’t even know that till I bought a few for parts.

Left is the new Dark Apostle with a Mark IV upper half, the next is the AoD axe praetor it’s a good base model and I didn’t want to diverge too much the most I did was the new backpack, helmet, organic details and the flayed skin flowing in the wind. The other two were regular beakies, the blademaster with the MKIII helm is the one I’m most proud of, the glow from the blade is the first time I’ve tried conveying illumination on a model.

The art that inspired by army is this piece from Eidolon’s audio drama

Their pinks and purples on my guys are deliberately inconsistent because it’s actually in-lore that after Istvaan they had trouble sourcing their expensive paints and had to make do with what they could find.

Yeah I feel that well, "good enough" is never good enough. Nice lads you posted, I hope I can made models look that nice in just two years.

Second from the left is easily my favorite, he stands out greatly.

Huh, never knew that, well if I need beakie helmets and jetpacks in the future I'll check that kit first.

Now see, that Dark Apostle looks killer, however it looks more like an average CSM to me. I see the scroll on his hip but it could use a bit more religious iconography, like an open book instead of that dark flame in his hand. Maybe a banner, though overall really solid job. For the Praetor, this is actually not the first time I've seen that model, I've seen someone make an Iron Warriors one and a Black Legion one, but of the two I saw I'd say yours looks unique as shit man. I love what you did with it. The other two are solid and neat, not much to say on them. And I also want to complement your model bases, seriously people overlook that too much when it could add quite a bit more to the overall model.
The art that inspired by army is this piece from Eidolon’s audio drama
So that's where that artwork came from, I saw it once but forgot to look for the source of it.

@Tri-TachyonRepresentative Thanks, the left one is a squad leader, I just used the DA lower half cause it’s got the speakers in the legs. The other Praetor in the AoD box you can actually customize much more and I did.
IMG_5845.jpeg
He’s outright doing the pose from the art, has the twin daggers and his armor is “melting” like Eidolon’s is in the art. His friend here is an Overseer, dragging a whip. Painting the Possessed daemon head as an ornate mask is still one of my proudest ideas.

The armor melting effect was done with Typhus Corrosion and the bases are meant to be as gross and slimey as possible, probably some Daemon world in the Eye.
Huh. I never once thought of doing “heretic oaths of moment” for heretic astartes but man that is beautiful and neat.
Thanks, those oaths? Those are the not-purity seals from Stormcasts, except with the shield-hammer badge cut off. I dunno, I could see some of the few “traditionalists” left in the legion still doing oaths, just with a twisted take on it.

I love it. Upset I just never thought about it before. I know late heresy Abaddon was looking as the astartes essentially being reduced due to chaos worship but like you said there could be a chaotic take on it, prayers to ruinous powers, oaths to old gangs and the like.

I'm the guy who like their models clean for two reasons. The first is I'm not a good painter and I really have no desire to be extraordinary. I don't have the time to base layer what models I do have let alone the time or money to customize them with extra bits. Getting a clean model is my standard so that even though it isn't personalized it at least doesn't look like I spat the paint onto the model. I'm more interested in playing the game than hobbying so to me, the models are more like game pieces than works of art. I know my fire warriors are painted and modeled one way, and the Shas'ui another so that I can easily visually identify them on the table.

Second is I crave the symmetry. My autistic brain needs everything to match and see a consistent pattern across my army. I crave the structure of uniformly painted models.
