If it takes months (or years), this guy could have easily shot off to another country or the complete middle of nowhere off the grid. Even if he stayed in the US it’s a fucking massive country and not all that dense outside of urban centers.

With modern facial recognition tech if they actually pinpoint who he is and get a proper photo of him (by using DNA to figure out who he is) then its going to be pretty, increasingly hard to "disappear" in the near future. He still of course could live off the grid though and just avoid anywhere with a camera - but the problem is that they're increasingly starting to be almost everywhere.
Because this changes nothing. He'll get replaced and the governmental coverage branch will continue as normal. Likely with more security because now they're under threat.

That world's somewhat already here if you've already got a couple of quality photos. Doxing has happened via PimEyes flagging a photo of some company party or student association before. I've found the real name of Logan Birdsong that way because he went to an eSports club meetup in October 2022 and the student newspaper posted a photo of a crowd along with his name. If you're starting from scratch it's a lot harder - even if the NYPD/FBI/CIA/CEO cabal have better tech, there's only going to be so much you can get out of a crappy bodega CCTV camera. But it might get them somewhere, if that is actually him.
I mean this guy neither has a manifesto, nor does the FBI have much on him. The unabomber was somewhat known, they knew who kaczynski was, they just didn't know where he is. Just because you know who you are searching for doesn't mean you know where he is. Also, the unabomber was also rather active, having done many bombings, leaving clues, not amy, but they do add up.
