The era of using a legit credit card to sign up for an internet forum (even for $0) is so long gone they may as well be selling floppy discs.

This is beyond embarrassing for SA.

Once upon a time, it was a good deal to pay to sign up for a forum filled to the brim with interesting autists discussing all kinds of topics from laughing at weird online people to being a beat cop in a rough city to making good chili. It is not a good deal to pay to sign up for a forum with a dwindling population of sad old troons engaged in a circular firing squad but producing nothing that's creative or funny. Not even adjusted for inflation, since in 2024 would have been :5.61bux: in 2001.

Reminds me of this time i was playing with goons in some game and some newly registered child joined voice coms. He was 12 or something i think and i sat down with him and convinced him to leave the forums forever.
And that is the only time in the decade+ i was on SA that i ever saw someone that wasnt at least 30 want to join the forums, i cant even imagine theres anyone that wants to now.

You can use a fake name with fake address and it will still accept it.

SA is just a retirement home for shitposters who are too old, bitter and neurotic to hack it on twitter or tiktok. 90% of discussion on there is either mind numbing chat threads or reminiscing about the favorite old goon stories (zipline, groverhaus, doobie, etc). Occasionally someone with a sense of humor will pop up but making any kind of waves gets a target painted on them very quickly and they'll either be nagged into leaving or get their account nuked for upsetting the gentry.

This thread has slowed to a crawl for the past several years because the atmosphere on SA stifles any kind of creativity or vigor, and that coupled with an intense paranoia about being rubbernecked by outsiders has given them what can only be described as online chronic wasting disease. I seriously doubt this free account period is going to inject much life into the forum, and the fact that it's even being attempted tells me Jeff is aware of how stagnant and incestuous his userbase is.
