Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Call of Duty is one of those things where the harder someone fights against it and tries to argue that it's "killing gaming", the more I think they're opinion is worthless. There are million problems with the gaming industry and very few of them can be traced to COD.
And what's even more strange, even when COD was the most popular game and everyone was trying to copy it, the complaints fell flat. "It's just explosions" "it's ooh rah jingoism as revenge for 911" "the game plays itself" "if it wasn't for COD we'd have AAA pixel art platformers". None of it holds up.

Another weird thing is how few games rip it off 1:1. There was Battlefield, and Titanfall 2 (which is amazing) and that's about it unless you get into obscure games.

This applies to Batman Arkham Asylum clones (and thread tax). I like Arkham Asylum combat, and it's amazing how few clones of it exist. There's Sleeping Dogs (people like), Shadow of Mordor (people like), Mad Max (people forget about) and Captain America (people ignore). I'm told there's a huge glut of "batham" clones, but I can't find them. Maybe if you're being generous, you can include One Finger Death Punch.

How is Marvel Rivals a popular hero shooter now especially after the several superhero based games that flopped for whatever reason? To me, it looks like an Overwatch clone with Marvel characters. I'm getting tired of hero shooters.

The consensus is that Marvel Rivals is an okay enough game, and the Marvel universe will be enough to draw people to play the game. Compare that to say, Concord or LawBreakers, which their character designs didn't stand out in terms of "I REALLY want to play THIS character".

What I don't understand is how Dirty Bomb is still playable in 2024, even though the developers stopped updating the game years ago, they bought themselves out of Nexon to go independent, and their character designs also don't stand out like other hero shooters, which are comparable to the original operators in Rainbow 6 Siege. At least they aren't visual abominations like with Concord's characters.

Back to the topic at hand, while there's quite a bit of hype for the upcoming Dynasty Warriors: Origins game, and while I hope it succeeds, it's not a game that I'm interested in, since they're some parts of the Souls-like difficulty system (although not all the way), the game being focused on a nameless protagonist, and the very few types available compared to many different weapons in older games, goes against why people play Musou games in the first place, with the variety of characters and weapons. And I actually like the more insane and anime-like weapons that some fans criticized the games for, i.e. Bao Sanniang's bladed yo-yo, and even Xiahou Ba's Siege Spear (which looks like a giant rocket) looks fun to play with.

I've always hated Hero Shooters. I don't believe in being forced to pick from a set list of characters, I'd rather just make my own.

It reminds me of old Assassins' Creed combat, pre-Origins, which I quite liked, despite it being fairly simple; it flows nicely and feels really good, makes you feel strong and accomplished, and is entertaining to watch, with smooth animations.
Sleeping Dogs (people like), Shadow of Mordor (people like),
Both of these are really, really good. Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system gets a lot of praise, and rightly so. Sleeping Dogs was a fantastic rags-to-riches game with good combat and an interesting story.
Mad Max (people forget about)
I played this once, whilst it was free on PS4 for a weekend (or something like that) and it was very enjoyable. I'm surprised it isn't remembered more because it was a good game.
Captain America (people ignore).
I never played this, because I generally avoid Marvel things these days. Perhaps I should try it.

120fps should be the new standard. Gameplay feeling > muh graphical fidelity. I just can't go back to 60fps. It's very unresponsive and janky when I look at it with a critical eye. It's only with 120fps that I feel like I actually get responsive gameplay. If I cared much about graphics, I would just go straight to 30fps and crank that shit up. 60fps is just the awkward spot in between that most gamers simply don't know is inferior to 120hz or above.

The part in the demo where you storm the gate is actually done in an interesting way. Still the same hack and slash but added elements make it much smoother.

People just praise it to high heavens because compared to whatever came out at the time was way worse, which is a pattern we'll keep seeing with any future mid game coming out that's not interactive propaganda.
You have just described my feelings about Girls Frontline 2 and Marvel Rivals. I hear high praises regarding the 2 but they are absolutely forgettable at best and downgraded (at least compared to games that they try to imitate from) and a chore to play at worst.

Unless 1440p is normalized that will never happen.

Sometimes I actually like lower frame rates. A lot of modern games feel weird running at such high frame rates with hyper detailed graphics. Just doesn't feel right. Feels slippery, for lack of a better term. I even noticed my newer device runs the internet smoother, and it feels a little out of control. Like I'll if I'm scrolling KF I'll give a little swipe and it flies down all buttery smooth like the page is greased up and I kinda hate it. My older tablet actually chugs a bit and I can follow the scroll easier.

Some games need it, competitive multiplayer games, and 2D in general fares better. I really don't think a series like The Elder Scrolls would be any better if it was all lubed up. Am I the only one who thinks modern graphics just look cheap too? Like I don't know... It all feels plasticy. I really wish I could describe it better.

It is absolutely an Overwatch clone but it's less shit than current Overwatch and has Marvel characters, hence why it's popular. Right now it's actually an alright game because it doesn't have a lot of the blatantly unfun shit that Overwatch has, like the shield spam shit and people playing as healbots are actually gankable by someone playing a solo assassin. It's 100% slop for the masses but that's the entire reason for Overwatch's popularity, as it's slop and no games have successfully made a run at its niche.

Marvel Rivals has a recognizable IP, is decent enough, and its success is an extra "fuck you" to Blizzard as their employees are currently seething on twitter about it, so people are at least trying it out as a middle finger to Blizzard. Its a Netease game though, so the monetization is already shit and it's likely going to get progressively more aggressive as it goes on.

There's a texture issue on PS3 emulators when close to the camera, but if you can deal with that you might like it. It's not as polished as Batman, there's no stealth sections (instead it's replaced with timing based platforming) and the upgrades (except one you get early) are pointless, but if you want Arkham style combat it delivers.

Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system gets a lot of praise, and rightly so.
I didn't get much out of the nemesis system, I think because I killed bosses 99% of the time so the whole recurring villain thing never really happened for me.

I liked it. I think one issue with it is that you don't get the classic stuff like the interceptor or shotgun until you complete the game. And said items are useless because the shotgun is weak and the car can't do anything as you need the features of the Opus to do anything. I also remember the best content in the game (the big fights and the convoy attacks) are limited. There are great moments like the airport mission.

Thread Tax: Anime games, games with sexy characters, and/or games with furries aren't automatically cringe. We had games like Tomb Raider, Starfox, Banjo Kazooie, Mega Man, and Ridge Racer for years and it was never a problem.

Another weird thing is how few games rip it off 1:1. There was Battlefield, and Titanfall 2 (which is amazing) and that's about it unless you get into obscure games.
I can think of like three games for this type of thing, Warface, Ironsight, and XDefiant.

Warface released sometime in 2013, and is somehow still alive, but it's barely kicking. I don't think this game was made to be a true Call of Duty competitor, but the game played almost exactly like it with a few quirks like a Battlefield style class system of Medics, Heavies, and Engineers, which restricted weapon choices based on what you chose if memory serves me right. The game also featured hot swappable attachments where you can swap out scopes, suppressors, and grips on the fly. It was a decent game and I enjoyed playing it when it was on Xbox 360 and even a bit on PC, I wouldn't touch it now though.

Ironsight was released in 2018 and was a true "CoD Clone." When it came out people often compared it to Black Ops 2 in style and gameplay, as the game had a near future aesthetic with the game taking place in a way cooler 2020's than what we got now. The game had it all, just watching gameplay of it you can just straight up see that it was trying to be F2P Diet Coke CoD, similar animations, hitmarkers, sound design, UI, it even has the Treyarch style scorestreak system. The game is still up to this day, surprisingly, but after the hype died off, people didn't bother to stick around since there was no proper grind in the game that is commonly associated with CoD. No camos, attachments you bought with earnable currency, character items and skins were pretty much all only purchasable with earnable/buyable currency. That and the game just being CoD, most people would rather stick to what they're used to and play CoD.

XDefiant, developed by Ubisoft and after multiple beta sessions the game was released May 21, 2024, and will die on June 3, 2025. Ubisoft was trying to go for the throat of Activision with this game, it was a straight up CoD ripoff. The development and hype cycle of the game was interesting, since the game was being tested and teased around the mid point of the lifecycle of Modern Warfare II, which was a very contentious game in the CoD community. People were not happy, so a lot of people were kind of looking for an alternative, so XDefiant looked to be the next best thing. However, the game's actual full release was right in the middle of the life of the "newer" Modern Warfare III. This was bad, very bad for Ubisoft. Despite MWIII being a rushed, recycled piece of shit, it was one of the more enjoyable years for Call of Duty because of the constant support, post launch events and content, along with the developers being a lot more communicative than Infinity Ward which helped a lot with repairing community relations from the semi-disaster of MWII. All of this hype from CoD ship-jumpers was essentially gone, despite that the game still got around one million unique players on launch day, however it would be proven with time that Ubisoft would struggle keeping a fraction of these players. There's a whole list of issues that XDefiant had that I won't go too in depth about (believe me, I would fucking love to since I absolutely hate this game with a burning passion). But like I said at the beginning of this autistic paragraph of useless drivel, XDefiant is only going to last only a little over a year. On December 3, 2024, only around seven months after the full launch, the game's producer announced that the game would be eventually shutting down. Rest in piss, this is what happens when you make a shitty knock off of a game with a horrible visual style and aesthetic along with having absolutely zero skill based match making.

Along with that, I'd argue that Titanfall is not a CoD ripoff or clone. Yeah it's a "CoD-like" but it has enough quirks, ideas, and gameplay features to truly stand apart from it being just another cash grab trying to steal the CoD playerbase. It's also the type of game that they're probably most familiar with, since Respawn was founded almost entirely by Infinity Ward old blood, who funnily enough would go back to IW to work on Call of Duty again to make the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot.

And I guess for thread tax, Call of Duty is a quality product. Despite the issues with bugs, AI content, or not being "original" anymore. You know what you're getting, no other studio has truly been able to replicate the smooth gameplay style of Call of Duty, and as previously discussed in the post, most who tried have failed miserably. There really is no other FPS game of its caliber out there, and probably won't be for a long, long time.

I was barely thinking about multiplayer. I was mainly thinking about single player, but I guess you're right. I do remember a glut of level-up based multiplayer games around that time, but like anything that wasn't CoD/Halo/GoW, most died after a couple of weeks. At least in the UK. Games like Spec Ops: The Line, Farcry 3, and Blacksite Area 51.

There's kind of a similar thing with co-op. I loved Modern Warfare 2s co-op mode, but it was rarely copied. And it's a bit of a shame Nazi Zombies never became it's own dedicated game despite fan demand.

One of the things I remember was the whole Battlefield vs CoD rivalry. eg. When CoD Ghosts showed a dog in the trailer, Battlefield showed a scene of a soldier punching a dog in the face. But barring basic mechanics like "aim down sights", I struggle to think of single player games that cloned CoD.

Here's an unpopular opinion: COD almost single-handedly stopped console gaming from being totally in the shitter for a long time.

One of the most enjoyable things about owning a game console from the time the Atari came out was hanging out with your friends and playing video games together. Then came Xbox Live, and all the game review sites would dock you points if the retards who worked there somehow decided that the existence of split-screen modes somehow resulted in compromises elsewhere in development. You'd see lines like, "Unfortunately, due to supporting an obsolete split-screen mode, the game doesn't have tight enough graphics on Level 3."

COD and Halo 3 were basically the only games I ever saw students play in their frat houses or dorm lobbies. They were the only games whose developers gave enough of a shit about the player, not some faggot at IGN, to continue to enable socialization and fun.

That's all gone now, of course. Split screen is technically still there, but it requires everyone to have an Activision account so they can track & monetize you. The game's centered on grinding the battle pass now, not having fun. They even got rid of persistent lobbies and added AI censorship after a bunch of nattering, game-hating feminists harassed them about "enabling cyber-bullying." But COD didn't introduce either of those trends; they were showing up before they went all-in on the worst industry trends with Black Ops 4.

Most people don't know this, but despite having the fewest players of any modern COD except I think WaW (I may misremember), Black Ops 4 still made more money than any of the 360-era games due to the MTX. That's why we can't have nice things.

I struggle to think of single player games that cloned CoD.

The Medal of Honor reboot is the most egregious.

Eh, it's made by Asians so not much, it's rather mild shit. Storm does says she's a mutant and proud as an allusion to gay shit but X-men have always been an incredibly thinly-veiled allusion to minority shit.

I think the most woke thing about the game is that they made Black Panther really good and fun to play, which annoys me because I fucking hate the character.

Yeah, the Nemesis system is neat but if you're good enough to avoid dying, especially in the first game, you end up missing out on most of the fun of the content. It's a weird system where being better at the game gives you a worse experience. The sequel helped to improve this with more interactions other than dying to an NPC and a higher chance of them returning even after death but you're still getting less out of the system than someone that occasionally dies to Orks.

It's been a while since I played, but I think when you beat one you had three options. Kill them, let them live, and burn them with your hand? I forget, but I never really saw a reason to let them live as they got stronger if you didn't kill them. I think later in the game you can brain wash them to make them double agents? I remember the Nemesis system making for some DSP rage though.

dude you have no idea. There is a whole subsection of YouTube discussing why games are running slower and why the graphics aren't getting much better.
I don't fully understand it, but from what I know, it mostly boils down to shitty development practices from both epic/unreal and AAA companies and lackluster optimization practices that end up making a game look & run not much better than previous generations.
Some people will blame TAA, and I agree that shit usage of TAA is part of the problem, but the reality is that this is such a multifaceted issue & you cant point towards a single point that is causing all this.
