Wicked. - Based on the musical.

Not a big "Oz" fan but as a youth I read some of Baum's novels and enjoyed them, and it's a bit irritating seeing Wicked fans act like the franchise is some canon extension of the original instead of fanfiction, and act like the Wicked Witch of the '39 film or the original books is the same as the Witch from Wicked. It is really clear she was genuinely evil and wicked and enslaved animals, anyone who entered her turf and the local people of the territory she had taken over. She was not an unfairly persecuted well-meaning innocent.

Unsurprisingly, the movie has a more diverse cast, Blacks, Asians, Whites, probably a middle eastern person or two as well, than the Wizard of Oz movie, which had pretty much all white people in it.

So with all those people with different skin tones getting along, they freak out on someone with green skin?

Got dragged to it by some family over the weekend.

Disclaimer: Have seen the show a few times, either on Broadway or national tours.

5/10 it was fine, very Hollywood-ified, but nothing spectacular or "omg 10/10 oscar material" like people are screeching about online.

Grande has the voice but the anorexia was impossible to unsee. Erivo was very underwhelming.

Glinda's gay friends were...gay.

Not sure if it was the mixing or voices or a combo of both, but the songs did not bring the same oomph as the Broadway recording.

Defying Gravity being stretched out to death was complete ass and totally ruined the momentum of the ending. The final part where Elphaba is falling and sees her kid self in the building reflection before grabbing the broom...wtf was that.

Cameos by Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (the original Broadway Glinda and Elphaba) was a nice touch. Clearly have the better voice than Grande and Erivo.

This is the same sisterhood of high-IQ exceptional individuals that decided Cruella Devil should be a misunderstood hero despite her primary character trait being that she wants to kill puppies and wear them. No female antagonist can be left alone.

This is what female autism looks like.

I don’t see enough people on here talking about how absolutely fucking creepy Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivio have been acting in their interviews. Seriously, their body language towards each other makes my skin crawl:

To be fair, they both look like they were raped by Hollywood executives. And they probably were.

saw it today. its a mixed bag really. alot of if it is awkward acting, bad cg visuals and mediocre singing but not too bad for people that aren't really singers. too much cringe from glinda/ariana though which is what i was worried about. i liked that we get more character development with characters though and more lore for the world and more time for the character relationships to grow. as much as i love the original musical on stage some of the characters shifts in decision were quite fast with not much context as to why really and it definitely feels more natural with more context in the film. ive never read the book so dont know if it pulls from that or how faithful it is to it. only seen the musical twice on stage. the last act definitely is the best part of the film and it ends on a decent high i would say. aside from the cringe and the awkward first act glinda and elphabas friendship was done fairly well. as well as elphaba and fiyeros relationship. if you know what happens in part 2 i think it set things up fairly nicely and i think part 2 might be alot better hopefully.

i went in expecting to hate it from the first trailer. didnt hate it but didnt love it. im looking forward to watching part 2 anyway as it was still cool to see wicked in a film format.

It's probably intentional, like a marketing thing to get the rainbow flags gossiping about their "chemistry" but ariana looks like an aids ridden cancer patient with alzheimers eyes and the other lady somehow looks even worse so instead of making you think they might be lesbianing together it makes you feel like you're visiting a hospice to see your dying friend one last time.

Anyway, should I go see this tonight or nah?

I like the original wizard of oz and I like the movie Grease but I've never seen a live musical, oh well, I'll probably just go see this tonight to get out of the house and hang out some old friends, mostly concerned about the run-time it's apparently like 3 hours long.

The scenes are bright, which is nice. But that is about all I can say nicely.
to be honest that was one of my biggest issues with the film it just looks fake. i have this issue with a lot of modern stuff these days though. the rings of power series is also another criminal case of this. original lotr films have this more grimy real feel to it whereas the series is like super shiny overexposed nonsense. i hate it.

I thought this was okay, I haven't seen the original Wizard of Oz in some time but this felt more like a Harry Potter-type thing only as a musical. That may just be because they were in school though.

Either I got used to how she looks or Ariana looks less bad in the movie than in promo images and interviews etc., maybe they are using a bit of the CGI budget to make her look alive.

I agree the movie looks fake but I personally liked the color palate overall. A lot of the early stuff felt a bit awkward but there is a point where it clicks and starts to flow pretty well and the last act is good up until the very end which I kind of felt lacked punch. I know it's part 1 of 2 but the cliffhanger isn't that strong imo and it also feels like the story is just getting going in that last 30-40 minutes.

I also found a few of the songs irritating, and some of the stuff in the first 1/3rd of the movie was a little too cringe/on the nose type stuff ("why do you have to teach us history while teaching us history" or whatever Ariana says). Considering this is a movie for younger audiences that kind of stuff is to be expected though. Anyway, I didn't hate it.
