If someone had written a novel or an episode of a TV crime drama that featured the perpetrator of a well publicized murder getting caught they way this guy supposedly did, I'd say it was ridiculously lazy writing, because at the very least, the guy who commited what appeared to be well planned killing, would at the very least, not keep the gun!
So if it's really him, and it's looking like it was, I think this was all by design and he was trying to get caught.

I'm reminded of Fahrenheit 451 where the police chose some random male to be the criminal because it took to long to find him and it was making the police look bad. Granted I skipped the last 100 pages so there may be some details I missed.

He didn't think he was going to get caught. Simple as. He took off his face mask to flirt with the desk clerk at the hostel he stayed in. This guy was beyond arrogant

NYPD and Feds didnt catch shit. Some wage slave in McDonalds caught him for a pathetically low tip considering the crime. Someone shot someone in the middle of their city and it took them 2 days to confirm he might maybe not be in the city and 3 to find the backpack. Even after that they didn't have shit but lying and implying to the media they know his name when they didn't know shit.
