Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

That's actually a good question, what is the best of the small retro handhelds? Not concerned about price, just build quality and overall ability to game (battery life, screen size/type, control quality, that sort of thing)

My wife really wants one to play her favorites on and she doesn't really like my Steam Deck (which is what I use) so I'm hopeful I can find something smaller and yet still accessible
If you're not going past PS1, the Miyoo Mini + along with Onion OS is a really good combo. There are similar devices from Anbernic, but I haven't used them. Then you can find the tiny best set go romset to help curate games.

The Youtuber I trust the most with these things really loves the Miyoo Mini, but I've seen them in person, and they really are "mini".

I hear really good things about the Anbernic RG35XXSP from nearly every Youtuber. It's probably what I'm going to pick up after the holidays as a more accessible option.

Another reason to hate modern emulators: I decide to use RPCS3 just to play Hard Corps Uprising. Download the ISO, download the PS3 firmware, installed, game does not play. Have to mount the ISO, drag and drop the new pkg file, put it in the iso section and still doesn't work. It wasn't until I fucked around and dragged and dropped the pkg file (along with the updates to unlock the DLC) into the GUI and then finally it downloads and I can play the game... Except it's time locked and it kicks me out just as I get to the first boss.

I'm using this version of Hard Corps Uprising: https://archive.org/details/hard-corps-uprising-npub-30096

And I'm 99.9% sure there is some thing I have to click or install some obscure file that it's not referenced anywhere in order to get this to work. And I remember doing this to play that Scott Pilgrim game and had the same exact issue with the time lock but I hated the game so much that I just rage uninstalled the whole thing.

besides the anbernics, and if price isn't an issue, there are all those various mini-pcs from like GPD, such as the win mini or the win 4 that looks like a PSP. I'd also avoid trusting youtuber opinions, unless you're also hearing the same sentiment being shared on other medias, such as retrogaming forums and other channels. Otherwise you can always get a PS Vita and mod it.

try to get nopaystation and also download the .rap file. it's a license shit that's needed on an unblocked PS3 as well. Also, of course it's not going to be referenced anywhere. The moment shit like this becomes easy to use some lawyers starts a lolsuit.
the PS3 emulator is overpraised for what is worth, Tag Tournament 2 runs like ass too. Most games do, actually.

Unpopular opinion among retro fans but I'd shoot for an Android handheld regardless.

Everyone and their grandma is used to Android by now. A simple launcher like Nova, with per-game shortcuts on the home screen, is more approcheable and familiar than even the most well-meaning frontends for Linux. Odds are she already plays Android games, so there's nothing new to learn: tap the icon to play, use the task manager gesture to close.

The way you word it implies your wife is interested spontaneously, which is already a step up from the retards trying to force grandma to play retrogames, but you still shouldn't overestimate how much novelty and effort she will be willing to bother with.

If she wants to play "her favorites", I'll assume that means a relatively small collection, at least at first. 8 games in a 4x2 grid is already plenty, and since Android is simply plug-and-play to a PC for sharing files, these games can easily be rotated with new ones if need be.

Be sure to pick a nice wallpaper too, first impressions go a long way.

Pictured: my wife's Odin Lite. The first row are the games she plays regularly on her own violition. The second row are the rotatable games she plays (or drops) on my suggestions.

I recently got the triforce arcade games running on my pc. Playing F Zero AX and Mario Kart Arcade GP with an actual steering wheel controller is really fun.

This is the the fork of dolphin required to run the games

I figured something else out, to get f zero ax card emulation to function properly, you need to set "tribackup_SBGG.bin" as "read only" in your file browser. It will be located in the "Triforce" directory in your dolphin "User" folder

mount the ISO, drag and drop the new pkg file
ISOs usually don't have PKGs in them, that one's probably meant for some cfw or sth, just extract the files and install them in this order: game pkg, dlc pkg, dlc .rap, unlock pkg, unlock .rap.
try to get nopaystation and also download the .rap file
The iso already has them it seems, nps doesn't have one for the US version of the base game and psndl says use ReactPSN.

Alternatively, the psp homebrew scene is pretty decent, and if you can pick up a cheap PS vita, you can mod those too. I wouldn't know if they're better spec wise, I think the vita can run everything up to some Dreamcast, but the form factor is there.

Does anyone have Wii/ Gamecube recs? I was a young kid when they were modern and going back and playing all my old favorite games, I am realizing they are massively unfun. Like I loved My Sims and playing it now, it's just total trash.

Are there any people here who were teens/adults during that era who know some games that actually hold up? So far I've liked Pikmin 2, Endless Ocean, and Viewtiful Joe
007: AUF, 007: Nightfire Alien hominid, Metroid prime, and hulk ultimate destruction are my favorites on the GC. I think most of what I've mentioned have PC versions and/or remasters too .

I've been looking for a certain audio file in the extracted AC5 radio folder, among side the 11k audios, there's tons of interesting stuff in there. Hints to scrapped missions and mechanics, I'm wondering if any of you would be interesting in reading some of my findings (such as the order of the characters being all over the place). I would try to do this in a gaming forum, but most of them are dead, or moved to discord. Which is fucking cancer. The only one that isn't dead that comes to my mind would be, GBATemp, which is a great resource for some tools, but half the userbase are troons, retards or both.

Speaking of GBATemp: this is their troon patreon badge. I can't be the only one who saw saw a noose.

The game is on record being the most rare and expensive cult classic game to own and play. It’s so expensive, that even on eBay, there’s people asking over almost a thousand dollars to buy it and own it.

This YouTube for example actually put his money where his mouth is and bought the game for full price:

Man, I miss those weird, budget game publishers: agetec, Rising Star, Global Star and some others I'm completely forgetting.

D3 Publisher and 505 Games are probably some of the few, if not the only ones that are still around from that era of gaming.
D3 is bandai namco, its the brand they put on games they are ashamed to put the normal brand on.

Its fun to play gears of war 3 on an emulator. Since we will likely not get Gears 2 or 3 pc any time soon. Despite Microsoft also owning and releasing the MCC, there's no equivalent to any other of their franchises for some reason. All I wanted to do was play horde 2.0 with a higher framerate. Yet the coalition seems to have ceased to exist after whatever happened upon releasing "Gears 4 and 5". Guess they had their own 343 arc.

I would have paid money for an official "Marcus Fenix Collection" on PC despite already legitimately owning all the gears games during one of their many giveaways via "games with gold" years ago.

So is this nigger going to actually play it in the video or just LARP about it while slapping on a fake price tag label over a freshly printed cover on a generic PS2 game case? Its easier than ever to fake this shit these days and he doesn't even play it in the video. Total jewtuber death.

>The most ergonomic controller ever invented

I use an 360 controller for everything including emulation. If I want a more “authentic” experience for the console Im emulating I’ll buy one of those cheap third-party controllers off Amazon. Its plug and play even on linux.

It’s the best controller ever made.
