General Wrestling Discussion

Part of me wants to say that Uncle Dave is finally getting the hint, but I won't get my hopes up.

Rollins is killing CM Punk live with this promo.

Pretty decent. Kinda wish they would be wrestling at SNME, but am willing to see them work crowds through promos.

Speaking of SNME, this card is getting stacked as hell in terms of talent and storylines. The only match I'm not feeling a lot of investment in is the triple threat for the WHC. I'd rather see Priest interfere in Finn's match and make him lose as retribution than a straight triple threat.

AEW just pulled Willie Mack from a bunch of GCW show, and the GCW guys are crying about it. So you will get to hear more about AEW in the coming days.

if by "gcw guys" you mean just joey than yes. I've known joey since his career began and he's always been a crybaby bitch, especially now when daddy brett can't book who he wants

It doesn't matter how good the matches are on any given Rampage because the audience has already been trained to think of it as the C show in AEW that consists mostly of jobber squashes or practice matches for the greener workers to see how the crowd reacts to them.

It's being cancelled next year anyway so Dave is once again dumb and gay.

That would make sense, but I think they are trying to give Gunther a clean win to really establish the fact that it wasn't just Balor's interference at Summerslam that made Gunther the Champion which I also get, it was for sure a great RAW though, I thought the New Day getting booed out of the building was a good segment too

How does AEW continue to stay afloat? You know what the WWE does and always has done incredibly well? Merchandising. I still have all of my Jakk’s Pacific toys I had as a kid that must’ve cost my parents a small fortune. I have seen a few Bullet Club shirts in the wild over the past ten years, but I constantly see nWo and other WWE branded apparel all over the place. It’s like as time goes on, AEW ceases to exist.

I hear more people talk about CZW and GCW events than AEW.
Tony Khan's literally a trust fund baby. I mean, he's likely using his father's money and the money from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham FC to fund his promotion.
Did you watch that Netflix series on OVW? There is a dude there, Ca$hflo, who worked a few matches in AEW. As just a bottom of the rung job guy he got a huge paycheque for an journeyman indie jobber. It was a massive payday for his family. I don't know if Tony still pays out like that, but I haven't heard anyone bitching about getting paid less.
What's actually even more funny is that OVW is in more homes than AEW thanks to their YouTube simulcasting.

Yep. Not only that, the final episode so far for Rampage is going to be at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Dave's never going to acknowledge AEW going to shit because he put his entire career on the line defending it. He's wanted a promotion that appeals to his style of wrestling (small guys with indie cred doing flips and kicks for minutes that's basically New Japan in America) for decades and now he finally has that with AEW and the fact that AEW is a total shitshow with everything from ratings to its backstage drama it has basically killed Dave's voice as an authority with wrestling. Unfortunately people have realized too late that Dave's tastes in wrestling have hurt wrestling.

AEW isn't even that bad. The in ring at the weekly shows is good and their PPVs are usually good to very good.

The problem is how predictable the week-to-week booking is for the past year or so. You can look at any given card for any one of their weekly shows and guess the winner 100% correctly with even only a passing knowledge of the product. TK had the first 5 years of the company mapped out and blew through most of his good ideas in this time so popular guys and girls he has built up are just spinning their wheels in dogshit angles now.

When he signs new talent he doesn't know where to slot them in most of the time so he usually hotshots them into a big angle and then sort of forgets about them after their first PPV match.

There are a number of factors as to why they have lost nearly 400k viewers in a year but a big one is the absolutely forgettable booking. I've said it before but it is criminal TK has this roster of talent and books it so poorly.

He needs to completely step away and let someone else book the shows. If it works? Great. If it doesn't? Fair enough, let him keep doing his thing because the issue must be something else then.

All caught up last two weeks of Raw. I'm not sure if it was the move to two hours but the shows pacing and timing just seem well put together. Each segment felt like a good length.

First some post War Games clarity:
  • The match itself though cool should be shelved. I do love seeing it and the look but this year there was 3 injury in mens and the womens, especially the getting weapons spots, looks bad. Not sure if it's the pre match placement or just the lighting and being unable to see where things are but maybe adding some hidden indication where they could be would be nice.
  • This made me nostalgic for the old school 5 v 5 matches. with the more defined brand splits hopefully this means for a reintroduction next year.
  • Nia Jax, though she is slowly growing on me, is still operating sloppy shop. Just because you're related to The Rock shouldn't make you immune to in ring coaching.
  • Tiffany continues to do well. See her getting the title soon and having a good run.
  • Gunther Vs Priest was nice. Would be cool to hear references from back in 2019 when they were teamed together for Surivor Series and more NXT day banter. Dudes have history and though this angle of a champ questioning his ability is a nice touch.
  • The CM Punk/Punk stuff is good and if they don't have Roman in the Title Picture than this is the Wrestlemania Money Match.
  • Kaiser continues to impress me. The split from him and gunther was well needed. Bron is still a beast tho.

Raw Random thoughts
  • The New Day turn and then the next week reaction was amazing. Just hearing them get drowned out and then seeing cell footage it was amazing. With them in Boston on Monday I am curious how the fans will be there.
  • I am actually really digging what the Final Testament is doing and adding Miz only helped them. Splitting Miz and Truth has only helped other talent which has been awesome.
  • The Wyatt Sicks and the Final Testament stuff has been good. Memorable atleast. I am liking its giving each of them more screen time. Hope lumis is okay.
  • Truth and Pete/Butch stuff has been great. Not too childish the social media posts also help. (Cold as a Butch. I mean freezing) Working with truth even though he's eating pins is really putting Pete/Butch over with the crowd.
  • Tag Team division is getting interesting and I can't wait for JD to drop the titles. With the talks of transfer windows I assume MCMG will be heading over to Raw (Makes sense imho their look matches the brand better) and it looks like WWE is slowly fleshing out the division especially with the potential addition of Lucha Bros.
  • Seth and Punk set up has been great. History is there and both, even if they do hate eachother, love money more so should be a good build up and match. Hope they add wave dashing in wwe 2k25
  • Really liking the Dakota Kai solo stuff. Hopefully they keep that going.
  • Sami, Jey, Seth,Drew stuff is great. Loving the center piece being Roman and it kinda interweaves the world more.
Overall so far good track record with the shows, NXT has been great as well, to close out the year. I am still looking forward to see how the Netflix Transition goes.
Also reading Steel Chair to the Head: The Pleasure and Pain of Professional Wrestling more of an analysis of Professional wrestling from different scientific standpoints (Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology). I like easy to pick up and put down. Recommend checking out.

and I picked up Pro Wrestling Sim on Steam. Not a bad booking simulator. Steam workshop so you can easily get rosters from specific eras and not as tedious as TEW. Fair amount of customization and randomness. If you need something to pretend to look productive while procrastinating check it out.

Reading this made me realize Pete's gimmick is being mad and unable to let go of the fact Vince gave him a shit gimmick/name. :story:

AEW also focuses way too much on in-ring work. Your wrestlers shouldn't be cutting promos about how great of a match they're about to have, or how good of matches they have. They should about their actual program. No one outside of smarks give two fucks about in-ring stuff. Yeah, they gotta at least be competent, but larger than life personalities and interesting storylines are what draw in the viewers. Austin drew way more when he was injured and brawling rather than when he was an in-ring technician.

The generally higher workrate is something I can appreciate if im gonna talk about AEW's positives, I don't like the no selling garbage that immediately exposes how overly choreographed the performance is
This too. Canadian destroyers should not be a damn transition move

Steven Richards on Kronik's short stint:
This nigga really using phone filters to try an pretty up his thumbnails like some kinda middle aged korean woman?

If I had to put together a list of reasons why I stopped watching aew, insulting my intelligence by burying the Canadian Destroyer on a weekly basis is one of them.
You gotta work em like John Wayne Murdoch does. Make sure your opponent really sells it, then just roll him over and get your W, king.

John Wayne Murdoch.webp

You are just now getting this. Not during that Raw where Sheamus kept hammering home that his name was "Butch" and not "Bitch" and so definitely no one should make fun of his gimmick because he might get upset? The audience was screaming "BITCH BITCH BITCH" all night.

I liked a lot of the Bucks and co's stuff early on, but seeing a man do a flip to put another man through a table is only entertaining so many times and after that point you start to realize that's all they can do.

Like, if I saw a man pull a lawnmower out of his ass on the street corner, I'd go, "Holy shit that's amazing!" but it's going to lose its novelty pretty quick after you see him do it a few times.

I gotta call bullshit on this because I can't think that the Snowman anticipated getting CM Punk, Brodie Lee dying, Cody landing like a wet fart/going back to WWE, etc.

I think he had a basic idea for Hangman getting a 'big win' and maybe some broad strokes shit, but 5 years 'mapped out'? Nah.
