Also, for an actual tip, your character, when posed, shouldn't be able to fit in a coffin. If they could, your pose is boring, over exaggerate the fuck out of it. If you literally move the hand away from the body, its instantly a better pose, despite the rest of the piece. Especially since this pose isn't even particularly natural, your arm naturally would be more on an angle.

The discourse around this image has been circulating on X for a while and it seems like most people are taking the side of the blackwashing artist, which is sad. I don't know if this has been mentioned in the thread, but 1, the art pieces are all traced, and 2, this artist is selling these traced artworks as commissions.

Aren't artists supposed to hate tracers? There were entire videos exposing artists for tracing once which were taking very seriously and now artists don't care about tracing. It's like some people drop all of their values in order to accommodate a minority who is slightly inconvenienced. What was the harassment that the artist even got. She closed her account for a while, but no screenshots of racist messages were ever showed. I bet the "harassment" didn't compare to the dozens of times where SJWs doxxed and sent death threats to artists for drawing a black character slightly lighter because they were in a lighter setting. It's insane how low the standards are if you know how to grift properly. It's like standards don't exist if you claim someone called you a no no word.

Lmao. Here we have one of the original "SJW art styles". My goodness, it's just so hideous every single time. Pretty much all of the "artists" that use this style all seem to draw so similarly to each other, too, just with some variation in their ugly coloring.

We all know this, but I just can't give over this disgusting style. This image in particular looks like a corpse. The worst, though, is when pooners use this style for the uwu yaoi fanart porn they produce.

Everyone and their uncle is calling Anya a She/They (and pooning out poor Daisuke.) But how the hell do you make these characters look so fucking unappealing compared to their actual in game low poly texture models? Like the style here just makes me physically revolted. Poor Anya and Curly look the worst, with Anya looking like a Trannified Shelley Duvall and Curly looking like a fucking Neanderthal.

Semi-related but a popular mouthwashing fan animator, Joetastic, made some videos with voice acting, where hey had some transwoman doing the voices for Anya and Daisuke. Saw some people defending the decision against the few detractors by saying “you’d have never known the VA was trans if [she] didn’t have it in [her] bio” or something. Which was hilarious bc I immediately clocked it as typical tranny voice. They all sound like dudes trying to do mommy roleplay asmr. A character whose whole story is that she was raped and forcibly impregnated still gets troon treatment, truly nothing is sacred.

The funny thing is that Anya would likely hate trannies even more than the average woman because of what she went through. Do people seriously think she'd jive with sex-crazed men crudely imitating womanhood in demeaning and insulting ways as a lifestyle, after she got raped and impregnated by said rape? Yeah, I don't think so.

The Mouthwashing fandom is so garbage and unserious. If only that game came out 13 years ago instead of now. We'd have 20 times the amount of yaoi fanart and shipping wars, but I'll take that.

I remember seeing that video and clicking off because the voice-over was low quality and boring. The 5 tips are:

• Consider the story when designing your character
• Take inspiration from things (like using a moodboard on pinterest to come up with a style for a character)
• Design characters together so they don't look too disparate
• Exaggerate things (basically what @A Very Big Fish said)
• Give your character imperfections

So very general and basic character tips. 2 and 5 bug me a little though. 2 is just "use reference images when designing a character" but applied to what you want to draw instead of how to draw, and 5 is just that old tumblr post rehashed for the 5000th time. I'm gonna say this much, you shouldn't give a character a ton of imperfections, especially if it's irrelevant to their character. And as an addition to exaggerate (which I'm not sure if she mentioned because I skimmed,) I'd say make sure the negative space is interesting. Some poses will be tighter than others, but clean silhouettes are always better for cartoons/primary poses.
In fact, Bubbs has an accidental example of this in her own video! One of her sprite poses is way stronger than the other, it's more dynamic, easier to tell what's going on, and is overall more appealing:

Then if you remove some of the extra details that don't tell us anything new about the character, like the absolute excess of freckles, choker-on-necklace-under-neck-shadow (too much shit on the neck!!), and "texture" in the hair that doesn't add anything:

and personally I think we could push the pose a little sassier (though I'm not fixing the length of the arm but it's looking kind of stumpy)

honestly I think the difference looks way better. Fuck it, here's Chromeo's 5 character design tips:

• Prioritize legibility and clarity of purpose. Reduce detail, strengthen poses, and take up space.
• Avoid lazy mistakes like tangents and art lean. Flip your canvas, cut things into pieces, redraw what you can't warp into place.
• Get rid of Good to make room for Great. If you drew yourself into a corner, start over. You did it once, you can do it again but better.
• Assign a hierarchy to your character's traits and emphasize accordingly. Important details should be emphasized, unimportant details scaled back, and trivial details abandoned.
• KEEP CARTOONS SIMPLE, STUPID! Every line adds 10 years and every freckle adds 20 frecks. If I catch you drawing every single skin detail on a character that's as simple as hello kitty, I will break your fingers.
