Same thing happened with Demon's Souls development mindset wise. Fromsoftware came in and got to work with this dead Oblivion clone and made their own unique game in the process specifically because they figured the game would be a failure regardless, so why not go nuts and be non-orthodox with it?Troons don't understand that old games were good cause they had less people working on them, had smaller budgets and took less time. They're very refined and focused because of that, if they failed it wasn't a big casualty cause god hand did fail after all, Mikami knew it was going to fail but did it cause he wanted to (watch archipels documentary on mikami).
And so success was made, dark souls 1 furthered it. The problem is that Fromsoftware always doubled down and played it safe from there on. In no way did they ever innovate further than DS1 fundamentally and this is why a lot of fans outright got sick of Elden Ring since it was DS3 II. This video should be mandatory viewing to game devs.
