The Worthwhile Games of 2024 - Roundup of games released in 2024 I and fellow kiwis have played that are actually fun

Warframe is actually a surprisingly sick game for a live service job simulator, I recently got back into it and have been catching up on content, it's not perfect but hovers pretty consistently between 8 and 9 out of 10 IMO. protip, if you want to do all the content in the game but skip the grind, use your plat discount coupon and buy Dante. he's OP as shit with a half-decent mod setup, and only gets better if you invest a couple formas in him and his book. press 2,2,4 and enjoy being basically unkillable
so i got the ash prime and ive been collecting mods for him. i got the Armar set with the nelphi daggers and the vectis prime set up for alpha strike and staus . i am very satasfide with my gundam-ninja-robot we should make a kiwi dojo

Abiotic Factor
Easily game of the year for me. Amazing half-life vibes mixed in with great RPG survival craft gameplay. The game has so much content for what you're paying and more is still coming. Great atmosphere, interesting environments, compelling story and personally just a fuck ton of fun and one of the games I going to remember playing.

Once Human
Chinese mobile dev creator so didn't expect much, but liked the concept art. Game ended up being pretty cool from an artistic standpoint, enemy's were cool looking, gameplay was decent, and what was nice was that it wasn't insanely pay to win or full of micro transactions. It had them, but it wasn't in your face about them. The major downside was the progression gatekeeping that made it so you could only get so far, which was really annoying once you hit it.

Planet Crafter
It was in beta for a while but 1.0 came out this year. Fun little open world survival craft style game, nothing crazy, but has a really comfy vibe and an enjoyable exploration loop. Build things, planet gets more open, build more things, explore more planet. Simple game you can literally 100% in just a few days. Also has new DLC that just came out that essentially doubles the playable content.

Core Keeper
Another game that's been in beta for a while but had the 1.0 release this year. I'm sort of torn on this one honestly. It's an open world survival craft with mining, farming, and dungeon crawler elements. The game definitely has it's charm and is a pretty fun little experience, but it's in this weird space where there's more content than game, if that makes sense? There's a lot of building creativity and automation that can be done where you can make amazing bases and farms, but when it comes to the actual things you need to do to beat the game, there's just not that much. There's no real need to have more than one base, and the best most optimal place to build is right at spawn since it's in the middle of the map and since you need to travel all over the map, compounded with the effort it takes to build a base and the pain it is to move items, it just feels like there's so much you could do, but not much of a reason you should do it.

Pokerogue
Yea, I know, tranny infested pokeslop that was a whole shit show, but fuck, was it fun for about a week. I am not much of a Pokémon fan, and haven't bought/played anything Pokémon in over 10 years, but I saw it and thought fuck it, could be interesting, and damn it was for a little bit. Fun gameplay in the old good 2D style, what more could you ask for?

Palworld
Honestly I'd love the game even if it were total shit, just because of how much of a fuck you it was to Nintendo. What can I say though other than, pokemon with guns. It was a cool multiplayer experience that was really fun while everyone was on the band wagon. If anything I'll remember the game as a fun knock off that pissed off one of the biggest slop producers currently out there.

Ys X is fantastic. I didn't expect it to be nominated for any "official" GOTY award shows because those groups are pozzed and hate anime, but it objectively should have been up there with Wukong as a contender for at least Action game of the year.

Like most modern Falcom games you have to turn the difficulty up to get any challenge at all, but the gameplay is fun to engage with and makes you feel like a badass. The story is also really good, though not as good as Ys VIII. The only part I didn't like was the sailing. It was kind of useless and I would have rather had more land to traverse like in all the other Ys games.

Ys VIII is still the pinnacle of the franchise in my opinion, but every single title in the series is great so it doesn't really matter which one is your favorite. They're all great.

Earth Defense Force 6 was also a good release for this year. Though if you haven't played any of the EDF games you're better off paying less for 5 and then going to 6 if you just wanted more bugs to kill. 6 is basically a big ass expansion for 5 than an actual evolution of the series. Which is totally okay. I wish more games just said fuck it and released more frequently with what works instead of massive dev cycles to reinvent the wheel and ultimately fall flat on their faces.

Nairi: Rising Tide
The sequel to Nairi: Tower of Shirin, a great game which seemed to slide under the radar despite its quality. A cute adventure game that starts off light but gets somewhat darker as the story goes and has some pretty clever puzzles. The art-style has a lot of charm, especially the characters, and there's a lot of love put into it. Feels a little bit like a mix of Professor Layton and traditional point-and-click games.

Funeralopolis: Last Days
Short indie horror story game about an apartment manager and his paranoid tenants as they begin to experience unnerving events. Incredible atmosphere and worldbuilding, and free on itch. It's like a fever-driven Kafka short story.

Mullet MadJack
My GOTY. Arcade shooter with an 80s anime art-style. You're a mulleted dopamine addict who will die within ten seconds without a fix. Luckily you are wired to a livestream and the audience will give you hits of dopamine if you entertain them with stylish murders. It's not a puzzle game like Hotline Miami and relies more on reflexes but it gives a similar rush once you start getting into a flow, especially on higher difficulties. Has a great soundtrack.

Honorable mentions
Cruelty - extremely gory indie slasher horror by a solo dev
Angel at Dusk - if Berserk was a shmup
Our Adventurer Guild - we have Final Fantasy Tactics at home
