One of her sprite poses is way stronger than the other, it's more dynamic, easier to tell what's going on, and is overall more appealing:

Then if you remove some of the extra details that don't tell us anything new about the character, like the absolute excess of freckles, choker-on-necklace-under-neck-shadow (too much shit on the neck!!), and "texture" in the hair that doesn't add anything:

and personally I think we could push the pose a little sassier (though I'm not fixing the length of the arm but it's looking kind of stumpy)

Might as well take a crack at this too. I'm gonna redraw this by using Chromeo's edit as a jumping off point but without changing any intentional stylistic choices.

Spoiler: For Starters

Any character artist will tell you that the key to expressive poses is line of action. Or as I like to call it, "the spine". Her chest should be outwards and her shoulders should be raised if she's supposed to be confident or cocky in this sprite. I also fixed that right arm because holy hell.

I shrunk her irises a bit. This is because smaller irises are much better at conveying expression since they don't take up half of the sclera. I moved her smile to be further towards her eye, Though, I may have made her a little too smug. At least you can now tell what she's thinking,

I can see what the artist was trying to do making one of the most aggressive and violent characters a surfer. Hypothetically, contrasts like that make characters interesting by giving them an illusion of depth. You can even justify it with his "doesn't like anyone" nature (surfing can be solo) and his aspirations to sustain life. However, even with how rough it is, the details and shapes make the whole design feel cluttered. I don't have to go into too much depth about that or the posing since others did that already. The tattoo, accessories, even the skin coloring can be nixed. Just go all the way and make him a human. Object heads aren't that interesting and there are plenty of ways to draw human ones.

Cool, does the artist mind showing it? One thing I noticed is that these artists try to be subversive by giving characters conflicting traits without anything to really warrant it. Cow furry has a very soft look and calm expressions. Trying to shove anxiety into her doesn't work when there's no actual reason for it besides making characters seem more interesting.
