Last gen, the PS4 won over the Xbox 360 fans that were sick of the casual, normie-slop fed to them by Microsoft. Sony took around 50 million customers from Xbox.

Now, in the fifth year of Current Gen, Sony has 60 million console sales, with xbox racking up 25 million. Which means around 70 million (160 million PS360 owners and 150~ million Xb1/PS4 owners) are either refusing to upgrade to the PS5 (50% of psn users are STILL using the PS4*) or have Switch-ed (see what I did there?) to Nintendo.

The outlook by all measureable metrics, is not looking good for Sony. In fact, they're on course for a Microsoft-level crash in terms of customers.
The Steambox will kill them, the Switch 2 will kill them, their lack of output and abysmal quality will kill them, an expensive PS6 in 2027 will kill them.

*Added fun - The PS4 will be shut down at some point, possibly around 2030, unless Sony force an upgrade and do it sooner. Either way, it's a PR nightmare waiting to bite them in the arse.

It also really does not help that the trend of keeping the old system on more than just life support when the new system is released has increased a lot when compared to older generations.
A ton of the normie slop still gets PS4 and xbone ports, including stuff like BO6, which released like a month ago. So these last gen systems still are perfectly fine for your average normie.
(by comparison, during the last switch PS3->PS4, COD had 3 cross-gen releases. We are now at 5 in the current one and there are little signs this will stop.)

This gen in its entirety is the worst since the ye olde vidya crash. Even without the whole PS5 no games situation there are just really no proper "next-gen" games in general that would warrant spending hundreds on a new console that otherwise just plays PS4 games at higher framerates.
By now in the 360/PS3 or even XBoner/PS4 gen the old systems would be something to hand down to your 12 year old cousin, not the primary gaming system of 50% of people.

The PS3 days are counted since soon there will be no tv that will display 30fps correct. All new tv have 40fps as minimum, and when all the LCD tvs are gone all PS3 games will be unplayable mess that will give you a stroke if you watch to long.

TBH i dont think that we will run out of normal TVs any time soon.
There are decades worth of decent Full HD ones to buy for very cheap and when push comes to shove you can always hook it up to a PC monitor.
That being said, that do is a very retarded limitation. Bet they all still only support max 60fps though.

The push for 'forwards compatability' is retarded and helps no one; new system owners don't get fresh games pushing their hardware, old gen owners never get incentivised to upgrade and studios get lazy and make ports aimed at lowest common denominator consoles.

Ironically, if the Xbox Series S was a 1080p@60fps machine, sold for £250 brand new, Microsoft would have dominated this gen.

Herman Hulst - the same guy who cancelled TLoU:Factions because it was going to piss on Concord, also signed-off on concord and this slop. Hulst is the wokest wankstain in Sony at the moment and while he is in charge, he will run the brand into the ground in ways never thought possible.

In the two years he has been running the show, we have seen two consecutive years of the lowest hardware and software sales, 1 exclusive game (Astrobot), a throng of games go to PC and woke cancer across the board.
Hulst said Killzone will never be back on Playstation and outright dismissed another game or remaster, saying GG is focusing on horizon..He launched a remaster that flopped and gave the lego game to Nintendo.

TL;DR Hulst and Druckman will be sucking each other off at Sony HQ.

Remember when the PS5 logo at CES got millions of views in 24 hours? Remember the excitement over the launch of the console, the positive feedback on tweets and youtube?
Back then, people knew Sony still meant quality, thanks to the PS4.

If these trailers are receiving so little feedback for a SONY exclusive NAUGHTY DOG new IP, then Sony are way beyond fucked.

6th gen was objectively the pinnacle of gaming, even if I have more nostalgia for 5th gen. Between DC/PS2/GC/XB there's probably a decade's worth of good games to play, at least.

Yes. It wasn't in development hell until Jim Ryan - the man who was pushing for Factions, VR and Horizon online MMO/Monster-hunter killer, left the business.

Hulst took the reigns, cancelled factions and six other 'GaaS' (online games), pushed Concord because Bungie execs told him to (they also told him to cancel factions), cancelled a remaster of Killzone quadrilogy (rumours) and abandoned VR2. All of this so he could push Horizon 1 remaster, Horizon: Lego and PC day-one launches.

Keep in mind that Sony have 21 major first-party studios. Where are the games other than Horizon and TLoU remasters? Cancelled by Hulst. Any game that threatens Horizon is cancelled. Bungie and TLoU are the only studios allowed to make games now.

Hulst is the reason for the woke.

I'm in favor of porting games to PS4 and XB1 indefinitely. It takes very little work, very few games require the new hardware, and expands the audience for any given game.

Here's the thing.
Optimization. Developers can't optimize for shit. Especially next gen devs. This will always be their excuse. Rather, they'll circle around it but it is precisely because you KNOW they cannot optimize for shit. iD Software got DOOM Eternal to run at 1080p 60fps no compromises on the PS4/One on iD Tech 7. They prove every shitty developer wrong when it comes to the excuses for capping framerates at 30fps. You're right about every new generation having little justification for existing, this issue is also bleeding into the PC market with graphics cards. Overpromises and stagnation when it comes to graphics, making everything look like smudgy shit just to maintain 60fps. My core standard is 1080p 60fps for modern games. If it is subpar it isn't worth the speculations. Its not worth Path Tracing in Cyberjunk 2077 if it is so unstable that you are required to have 4090s ON TOP OF DLSS or other shitty bandaids. Path Tracing may look great but it isn't ready until industry veterans or masters like Valve find a way to optimize it better. Just like Ray Tracing, Path Tracing is going to be a meme until we are all too old to give a fuck about vidya which is being accelerated rapidly with the state of the industry.

We're hitting a brick wall with graphics. The vast majority of gamers, normies included, are happy with PS4 visuals and don't need more.
1080p was pushed to sell tvs and physical media (we could have stopped here)
4k was pushed to sell tvs
now they've run out of excuses and labels to hang better graphical requirements on.

Fair enough point, though I'm going to be an opinionated, pretentious asshole and say this game'll be nothing short of a Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor clone, which is just "What if Sekiro...but Star Wars!", maybe throw a little SW Outlaws in there too, an obvious tinge of Guardians of the Galaxy and Blade Runner is already there, then top it off with whatever social commentary Cuckmann'll whip us across the face with this time. Not saying that'll be bad, gameplay-wise, but it certainly won't be winning any awards for mechanical depth, like most AAA vidya. As much as Cuckmann hates gamers at large, he still panders to the general masses portion of them in terms of making a movie gaem.

I've sort of future proofed against this by investing in the Retrotink 4k. It's highly niche, and ridiculously expensive for what it does, but it makes PS3 look fucking beautiful on my LG OLED panel. It's actually pretty futile to hope that there will be a resurgence in older tech. Perhaps it would be in the industries best interest to cool it on the antisemitic remarks obsession with graphics and move forward with a standard of good enough.

The funniest part is that the PS2 and PS3 sold so well because they were cheap DVD and Blu-ray players, respectively. PS1 was a cheap CD player before most owned them, as well. PS3 had 3D Blu-ray support.

Funny enough, the PS5 can no longer play CDs, while the Xbox Series X can. The format they themselves were instrumental in developing. Sony still sells and makes Walkmans (albeit digital only players) but they can't bother supporting CDs on their flagship console.

I remember looking at the detail on Mario's clothes, the textures looked like real fabric to me in Melee. And the whale from Sonic Adventure was the most realistic looking animal in a game ever, and I was floored by the whole chase segment and just how damn cinematic it all was. Being a kid during that generation was lucky. It certainly was a huge leap from the previous generation, which itself was a pretty crazy leap, maybe more crazy in a sense.

This generation is absolutely fascinating to observe as an outsider. Both of the big titans decided to have a self stabbing competition and see who could last the longest. So many of XBox's and Sony's problems are completely self inflicted. The PS2 Sony or XBox360 Microsoft would be dominating with an iron fist in this climate. Yet it's the switch doing what nintendo always does and PC gaming just chilling and doing it's thing as well what is winning the race.
