Singals position is the logical conclusion for someone who swallowed the "born this way" arguments made by gay rights activists 20 years. Pedophlia getting protections was a common rebuttal and the counters were slippery slope fallacy style arguments. But in current year we see it wasnt slippery slope but a prophecy.
Homosexuality being a sexual orientation you are born with but not pedosexuality never made sense. We know now that grooming and sexual abuse at a young age play a huge role in all the rainbow affiliations. But if you were a good ally and didnt believe your lying eyes like Singal did then the position Singal has makes sense.
Sexual abuse "playing a role" in a person being gay as an adult is a long-debunked myth. There are lots of gay adults who were never molested, for one, and if there were a causal relationship between CSA and homosexuality, there would be a proportionally higher incidence of it in women (controlled for cultural background), because girls are way more likely to be molested than boys. Now, it is true that gay people of either sex are more likely to have experienced sexual abuse, but if any causal relationship exists, it's the other way around; gay people, especially lesbians, are more likely to be targeted with sexual abuse
because they are gay.
Additionally, orientations and paraphilias are two different things. Though data is limited, existing research suggests that orientation is affected by variable exposure to certain hormones in utero. Paraphilias, on the other hand, tend to develop in late childhood or early adolescence (around the preteen years). In the case of many (but not all) homosexuals, they may literally have been born gay, but paraphiles are
made. The common quality these traits share (and the crux of Singal's argument) is that they are immutable; once someone acquires a paraphilia, it
is difficult if not impossible to de-program. Additionally, most people who were molested as kids (regardless of sexuality) are not pedophiles, and most pedophiles were not molested as children (though they may have been emotionally or physically abused). We truly do not know what exactly causes paraphilias, all we know is that it basically involves "wires" getting crossed the wrong way in peoples' brains at some point during childhood development, causing them to associate peculiar things (non-human objects, pain, children, etc.) with sexual arousal.
I also think it goes without saying that the rainbow brigade wouldn't be demanding Jesse's head on a pike if regarding pedophilia as immutable were a "logical conclusion for someone who swallowed the 'born this way' arguments made by gay rights activists." Clearly LGBT organizations have no issue discarding "born this way" as an argument, because their view of trans people is ostensibly the opposite; trans people are born in the "wrong body" and need surgery and drugs to resolve it. I want to clarify as well that I generally agree with your sentiment that "born this way" is a stupid argument that was only ever employed for utilitarian political reasons and not because it was the most logical approach to the issue. Why does it matter whether someone was "born that way"? The argument should be "consenting adults can have whatever relationships they want so long as no one or their property is being harmed." Like it's really retarded in retrospect that anyone thought it was ever appropriate for the government to stick its nose in that kind of shit.
