Do you guys think going to Army will make me a better, manlier man or am I doomed to stay a clumsy, unconfident coward forever? I wanna confidently talk back to people, get into fights and casually hit on the girls without even a hint of awkwardness but every time I try, there's some inner pathetic worm in me that holds me back as if I was afraid or cared about the consequences of my actions.
My best bro got drafted after getting his dumb ass kicked out of college, he was stationed at the border for the entire duration of his service in 2023 and even took part in fending off the mercs during Belgorod raids: shooting from the trenches, getting bombed by drones and all. Before the army he was kind of lost in life - failed getting an education, had no hobbies, was in a shitty relationship for a short time, spent too much time playing vidya; after he came back, he really was a changed man - became very responsible, climbed a career ladder at a local McDonald's (is now a manager), found a very cute and sweet gf there that really loves him back, is making a great progress learning to play on electric guitar and in general really grew as a person.
And to be fair, he's not the only example of army's good influence. The bro's cousin got seriously BUFFED in the army because he had nothing better to do there then getting into brawls with shitskins, guarding drafted inmates and doing pull ups all day.
I could never tell my friend this, but I secretly envy him in a good way and aspire to be like him. I really wonder if I went through the same or even simply through a regular service, I'd become a better man too. I asked my dad who's currently serving in Crimea if it's worth it and he told me that it's kinda boring and I'm better off not wasting a year of my life on this. He most likely meant it, but I can never be sure if he lied to get me out of harm's way or not. I know the military service differs from country to country, but I'd like to hear about your thoughts and experiences nonetheless.

It can whip your ass into shape but the problem is you're quite literally signing your life away for people that hate your existence.
I think the reason joining the military helps out some is the forced structure of everything. Some people (fuck, myself included) need a regular schedule to be productive people.

I can tell you from veterans I talked to: Their opinion is they have wasted their time in the military and would have rather do everything else.

My word of advice: Don't worry this much and don't dwell on past.
Society is established around tearing men down - that's the only way they can get labor-life extracted from you. Even other men are accomplices in this. Army may have worked for few, others you don't see because they are dead or crippled.
