The Sumo Thread - HAKKEYOI!!!

It's probably hard to find a job after an unsucessful Sumo career. They are morbidly obese, have health problems and no degree. Well, they could open a restaurant tho.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him lose a bunch of the weight now. Apparently Takakeisho has done that since his retirement earlier in the year and he's looking a lot better. 28 is such an early age though, but at least he's reached the top division and probably made some decent money from it in his 20s.

unsucessful? he was in the top division for 7 years
I'm not talking about him and never claimed that he is unsucessful. I'm talking about the ones who retire and didn't make a name for themselves. At least the worst Sumo wrestler of all time who retired like two years ago was 19 or so and thin (yep, he never gained weight and never won a fight) but someone who got injured so much that he can't fight anymore or is forced leave because of a scandal? I wonder what happens to them.

I'd love to find out what's happening with Hokuseiho now after being banished from the sport for the shit he did.

The last thing I heard was he visited the Arashio stable (Wakatakakage and Wakamotoharu's stable) to watch them in August this year which was months after his scandal. Coincidentally his top-knot wasn't cut off yet since he apparently still wanted a haircutting ceremony despite, you know, being a cunt. I've wondered what he even does now after he dedicated most of his life to sumo and now it's gone.

(Additional link to Chris Sumo's video on the August sighting too for further context)

I was just watching NHK's 2024 Sumo Review where they were trying to decide who the MVP of this year has been, and when talking about Onosato it just dawned on me how fast his rise to Ozeki was.

In the January 2024 tournament he was ranked at Maegashira 15 in his first ever top division tournament. By November, he had climbed the ranks and reached Ozeki and is now being touted as a possible Yokozuna promotion in the upcoming tournaments. He's not had a losing record yet for any top division honbasho, with his worst result so far is 9-6. Two championships within this year, and he's only 24. That is fucking insane to think about.

He made Ozeki with TWO yusho in what, 9 basho? He's something special for sure, I don't doubt he's likely to make Yokozuna. Right now I'm really hoping for one of the other two to get there though.
I'm kinda afraid he'll suddenly burn out or get injured and fade away like so many others have but for now I'm excited for all three Ozeki. I don't think I've felt that since I started following sumo in 2021.

If they don't choose him as MVP of 2024, who else? Takerufuji for the 110 year record and nothing else?

Exactly, Murray from the NHK show had a split choice of either Onosato or Takerufuji simply because of that record being broken and how special that was. It was between those two and Onosato got chosen.

I'd agree honestly. It would've been odd to not give an honorable mention for Takerufuji because of what he achieved, but for 2024 as a whole I'd give it to Onosato. Takerufuji was out for the next basho with an injury and hasn't been as dominant since that yusho win for the remainder of the year, whereas Onosato has at least had consistency and the two yusho wins.

Here's my predictions for 2025:
  • Kotozakura will be the next Yokozuna. I love Hoshoryu but he's not always as consistent and has rough spells, whereas Kotozakura is a bit more threatening (he gives me the same vibe as Takakeisho before his injury) and seems harder to beat.
  • I could see Hoshoryu and Onosato fighting for the next promotion (obviously depending on how the results go). I think we're still waiting to see how Onosato handles a drop in form though, since we've seen Hoshoryu come back from bad runs.
  • Terunofuji will retire at some point this year due to injury and inactivity, but I could see him returning at some point in the year for one last tournament win before retiring.
  • Tamawashi will retire, but I don't think he will until closer to the end of the year (or if he's plagued with an early injury).
  • Both Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage will be at Sekiwake rank together.

His super powerful showing in November and how hard he's going at practice bouts makes me hope something fanned the fire in him to have him level up.

That's what I thought for 2024 but here we are. It seems he's waiting for someone to take up the rope before he leaves but I guess something (besides another ligament) has to give at some point. I agree with you, it's very likely.

Tamawashi will retire
Naaaaaaah, he's going until he or his streak breaks.

Jeez man, Hakuho's July run was my very first full 15 tournament. Such a great difference on how he finished on a fucking high while Teru has pretty much limped to a whimper. Kaiju now better take care of his knees, 33 man. Body ruined beyond repair probably at this point.
I annoyingly only started watching the sport after Hakuho's retirement so I've only really got to experience Terunofuji as a Yokozuna, but he was great for the first year or so of watching. You could tell he had that 'final boss' energy against opponents and he was fun to watch, but in the last couple of years he's looked so fatigued and plagued with injuries it's sad to watch him struggle through tournaments. He got two yusho wins last year but between that he was bowing out of contests within days of starting them. This basho alone I've felt like Hoshoryu is way more of a threat than the actual Yokozuna himself.

It's definitely for the best and he's handled the Yokozuna title well in his peak years, but it's hard to see him bow out like that when (like you said) the likes of Hakuho managed to do it way more heroically.

On the topic of Yokozuna, does anyone else get the feeling that Kotozakura is struggling with some sort of injury? His right knee was bandaged up, but I have a feeling he's dealing with some upper body issue. Usually he's pretty confident to grapple and use his upper-body strength to toss out opponents, but this tournament he's barely using that (even when he's got time to do so).

Speaking of which...

How wrong I was.

After winning a 3 man tiebreak for the championship, Hoshoryu seems set to become the 74th yokozuna. maybe now his uncle can stop publicly bullying him!

Cheer's for the nephew! What an ending for the basho, may the nephew reign long as another Yokozuna!

His throwout of Takerufuji on Day 14 was amazingly done, and beating Kotozakura, Kinbozan AND Oho on Day 15 was even more satisfying. Surely this gets him a promotion.

Such an impressive tournament for some unexpected guys this time too. Kinbozan, Oho, Takerufuji and even Chiyoshoma earlier in the tournament looked really dominant. And what a fall from grace for Kotozakura (5-10) and Mitakeumi (2-13).

Also quietly weeping about Wakatakakage finishing with a 7-8 record.
