Takerufuji confirmed still out for recovery, hope he's doing well
He looked pretty solid in the few practice bouts he did during the June tour, albeit with a heavily wrapped ankle. I suspect hes just playing it safe to prolong his young career.

The real question is can Takerufuji and Onosato finally counter the dreaded Hoshoryu throw?

I've heard rumours of Takakeisho being on the verge of retiring if his neck gets worse, and Day 3 it's announced that he's out of the current September tournament with a neck injury.

I wonder if that might be the end for him.

It's probably over for him, sad that we wouldn't be able to see a dohyo iri from the battle hamster, it would have been hilarious ngl.

He's definitely not the same guy he was a year ago when he was getting around 10 wins per basho. And now with Onosato and Atamifuji coming up and doing better he's probably past his point now. Ozeki is still a very impressive rank to have reached at least.

I'm starting to seriously believe Onosato could be our next yokozuna and I'm not sure if I should be excited or fear the potential disappointment.

How has shishi been faring?

Not amazing, but at least his loss to Hakuoho looked funny.

Somehow Shishi has had some of the most intense matches in Juryo this year, win or loss.

Wtf happened to the ozeki bruh. Kirishima redemption arc though yeesh.
Hoshoryu never seemed to really level up beyond the consistent 10-ish wins, I'm afraid he might end up peaking where he is. Kotozakura has had a very slow but steady climb though, I believe in him.
What I'm really dreaming of is that Kirishima return for sure. I was hoping to have him and Hoshoryu as the Ozeki gatekeepers like Baruto and Kotooshu used to be, and my hopes aren't completely dashed yet!

The thing I love about him is that he seems to have a great mentality throughout the tournament so far. Someone like Atamifuji seems to have the strength and build to do well but his mentality isn't all there yet, whereas Onosato seems to excel at everything so far. He's got the strength and height of a rikishi like Terunofuji, the composure and movement of Asanoyama, and the mentality of an Ozeki. He's so exciting to watch.

I'm also loving that Wakatakakage is having a great tournament so far. The gap between him and Onosato has widened a little more now but he's doing really well for only recently coming back to the top division.

I'm surprised that Hoshoryu and Kotozakura aren't excelling this tournament though with Teru and Takakeisho both out. They just can't seem to get it right this basho.

When he first got to Makuuchi it seemed like he had the power but no defense, I'm happy to see he may have worked that kink out already.

It is official, Takakeisho has now retired.
Not unexpected, but still kinda sad to see. May he become a powerful coach and raise new cannonball rikishi.

I wonder if Onosato is the realest deal there is or if the state of makuuchi is really fucking bad. Either way, two yusho is nothing to sneeze at.

We know both ozeki can do well so I wouldn't be too dejected about it yet, but it's definitely a very unexpected result. At least Kirishima is doing well, I'd love to see him come back.

With Takerufuji winning Juryo 13-2 from J11, what are the odds he'll be launched through to Makuuchi again? Since he's been there before and obviously doesn't belong in Juryo I imagine the chances are bigger than one might think.
More iffy is Shishi at 8-7 from J2. That might get him there with some luck but I'm not betting on it. Would be fun to see him there for real.

Ozeki without even the full topknot and 2 yusho, either he soars into yokozuna real fucking soon or he gets snagged like the past few ozeki, or worse gets injured so bad ye goes down to juryo or beyond.

Also, Miyogiryu and Aoiyama has now retired and have taken their elder stocks, no surprises here honestly.

When was the last time we saw something like this? I don't think it has happened in my time following the sport (Since Hakuho's last tournament in July 2021).

That's what I'm really afraid of. This year has been especially bad with injuries large and small. At least we rarely see Onosato as the one being thrown off the dohyo.

Myogiryu and Aoiyama retiring was very expected what with their drops into and struggles to stay in Juryo.
I'm starting to realise that all the rikishi that were in Makuuchi when I started watching will be rotating out sooner or later. I will see Tamawashi retire in my lifetime.

I started watching way too late. Sumo doesn't have a presence in my country so Hakuho's last zensho yusho was my first tournament watch along. Before that, a random Youtube recommendation of Tochinoshin is what got me interested. I have my handful of wrestlers that I keep an eye on that would sadden me once they retire. Tochinoshin was already one, the arm dislocation in the dohyo of all places was just sad man. Ishiura being done dirty by Kotozakura still stings for me, that's why I'm a Kotozakura shunner.

That's crazy, my first yusho was in September November 2021, literally the basho after Hakuho's last one. I just stumbled across one of the day's highlights and got hooked on it. It's crazy that a lot of new fans tuned in just as one of the best rikishi to ever exist had just retired.

I just caught up with the last few days of the basho and Onosato looks so dominant. I can't wait to see Takerufuji back in the top division and hopefully it sparks a rivalry between him and Onosato. I'd love to see Onosato vs Terunofuji again but given how often Terunofuji is out of tournaments these days I wouldn't count on it anytime soon.

Also, my boy Wakatakakage won the Outsanding Performance Award. Proud of how well he did, and he's looked solid throughout the tournament at 12-3 and gave Onosato his first defeat of the basho. Hopefully he gets back to his old rank soon.

What is this referring to? Must have been quite a while ago since Ishiura has been retired for some time
Yeah it's quite old now. Saw it live on stream. Basically, it was strong pushout by Kotozakura on Ishiura, who got a pinched nerve out of the exchange. Pretty much ended his career then and their.
