I'm more referring to the fact that questions concerning subjective experience cannot be tested and answered like questions concerning behavioral responses to stimuli or mapping neural activity. Machine learning models can improve in reasoning and imitate humans perfectly as indicated by benchmarks, but we will never be able to tell if they have qualia like we do. It is purely a philosophical question, and philosophy is fiction.

Frankly I don't think qualia physically exists. Not that it's not real or it's an illusion generated by your brain (an illusion that eludes itself to experience... itself?) or some stupid shit, but that it transcends material reality. It is entirely subjective and there is no indication in reality that it exists, just that it is a prerequesite for the experience of existing to begin with. Any percived degredation in one's 'consciousness' from brain damage or impairment is simply the brain's ability to perceive, relay and interact with the world being diminished. If none of us had qualia, the universe would be a deterministic physics video playing to nobody. It would be as good as good as not existing, I.E. it wouldn't exist.

If we're talking about philosophy and whether AI can be alive I have a few interesting autistic ideas.
Consider if a virus is alive. Biologists tend to agree that viruses aren't alive because of their lack of metabolism (taking in and processing energy) and their inability to reproduce without a host. However they are a biological agent that to laymen seem to be alive. If you asked any random person on the street if viruses are living things i'd be the majority would say yes.
Now compare biological viruses to computer viruses. They act in very similar ways and need a host machine to reproduce and spread. Obviously being digital they don't need a metabolism. Now, if you asked people if a computer virus were alive, they'd probably say no.
Now consider a LLM based AI agent. It could use commands to perform actions on a computer, communicate to humans and other AIs, copy its weights and run itself on new machines, take actions to protect itself from being removed, etc.
In practically all ways it is far, far more advanced than your standard computer virus. Being a computer program it doesn't match all of the biological markers of life, but it is significantly more advanced than many biological agents we would consider alive, such as bacteria.
Ignoring all arguments of consciousness/sapience, someone with a very lax definition of life could probably consider an AI agent to be alive.

If this AI agent made an NPC for us, like a sandboxed version of itself with all the functions of an agent which is just a GTA-style normie NPC, and we virtually shotgun it in the face...did we kill a living NPC, or did we just kill a puppet it made to give us the impression of killing something? I assume there would still be active processes running to recognize the fact that the NPC remains dead, in the same way we can pretend a puppet in our hand is dead while we personally remain alive. With sufficient active memory the AI could probably also resurrect it, so no harm done. So did we kill something, or not?

The point of this being: will future video games involve actually committing atrocities/mass murder?
