I got curious and began digging deep into his old activity including his Scratch history, eventually coming across Github commit activity from 2012 on a repository for an old C++ Scratch compiler ItchyPlusPlus that he had contributed to as bobbybee. The email associated with the author of one of the commits is derek.a.rosenzweig@gmail.com (archive of commit). Epieos returns a lot of results with the email. Cross referencing with post history from the old Scratch forums shows a forum post from 2009 by bobbybee who signs one of his posts with Derek (archive).
There's a second post from 2011 that he also signs with Derek (archive). I think this might be it.

This shit is everywhere in the hobbyist scene, especially in places in the orbit of 4chan's /g/ board. I mentioned in the Marisa Kirisame thread that I knew Marisa back in like 2011-2013 through some /g/-adjacent IRC channels on Rizon and even then the mind virus was hitting a lot of the guys in that scene.
A lot of kids get into Linux and programming as a fun hobby and then spend way too much time talking to "Sayaka the Slackware Sorceress" or some shit on IRC/Discord and then it fucks with their perceptions of their own identity.

It's because autism heavily correlates with gender dysphoria, and tech jobs. With that comes a typical handicap in empathy skills, reading body language, and poor theory of mind skills. When you literally can't fathom what other people think and feel, you default to assuming that they share your mind.
So, they like looking at girls, girls look good, guys look ugly, therefore they are objectively ugly. They can't see themselves as other people see them, they can't accept that anyone could love them.
Besides that, those dudes grow up with a lack of irl socialization. They get bullied or ostracized by their male peers or father, while girls at least pretend to tolerate them. But as a preteen, they find themselves shut out of forming closer relationships. They can't go to their sleepovers, they can't sit at their table or make the same period jokes. Why? The boys bullied him for being not masculine enough, the girls shut him out for being a boy. Either way, from their perspective their male sex was only a liability. And because they lack empathy, they can't believe they have privileges, or see all the ways being a girl sucks.
Also, tech jobs typically come with enough benefits to afford transitioning. There's minimal downsides, as the job has no heavy lifting and almost no demands for social interaction. Which is also what draws autismos. Plus it's a rare profession where being male is almost a liability, male nerds are still stigmatized somewhat (which is why "techbro" is an accepted sexist insult). Whereas women in tech and stem are worshipped even when their actual accomplishments are lacking. Because they're assumed to live in a sexist warzone. When was the last time you heard a TED talk about women in trucking or hospitality? They don't need the support, even though they make way less money and deal with 20x more sexist bullshit.
Lastly, puberty harsh for everyone, especially those on the spectrum. They can't handle changes in routine well, and have rigid body images (many will meltdown if they don't wear a specific outfit, shirt, haircut etc. See Chris-chan and his striped shirt). So, puberty can be the most traumatic change of all, something they can't control, and worse yet they're subjected to shifting social expectations and rules of etiquette. Parents and peers stop tolerating certain childish behaviors and they can't understand why. So, they conflate their fear of growing up as a fear of being a man, as it represents the end of having fun, being happy, no more cake and ice cream, you know have to be your boring grumpy dad and work your hands to the bone. From their perspective, being a man means you now have to become a punching bag and work to feed, worship, and support women. And if that sounds unappealing.....well then you're not a real man.

That is to say, the medium does two relevant things: masking a lot of things that would contribute to a person's image, such as physical appearance, speech mannerisms, etc. The other thing is that it introduces virtual markers that function similarly, and gives a huge amount of freedom with which to control it. The extreme version is MMOs, where you play as a character you create. This is why they are furry and tranny havens.
I think there is nothing wrong with this, in fact it can highlight to the person that something they thought they were stuck with is actually just contingent on their identity. But the human brain is a piece of crap in some regards. It doesn't draw a hard distinction between playing a character and being that character. The persona you create will get incorporated into your behavior. This happens in non-internet mediated contexts too; used to be that people incorporated their job into their identity. People LARP themselves constantly, but the types of guy you can play used to be relatively constrained, so it wasn't obvious.
I think the problems begin when someone tries to take an identity from one context, which supports it, to one where it is fragile. For example, because the context doesn't mask the traits that are discordant with the image in question. Maintaining the self-image under those conditions essentially makes it more rigid, and almost requires deceptive behavior or trying to force the LARP on others. E.g. claiming that not perceiving them as a 10-foot sparkledog with wings and 15 special pronouns is violence. I believe it's a skill issue arising from not being willing to acknowledge the constraints placed upon oneself by the differing conditions.
