IMHO, wood stoves provide a much better heat than most of the modern solutions; it's a drier heat without the humidity of modern heating sources, which can be its own problem depending on the house. Just requires a little bit more work than gas where you just flip a switch and start sucking off from your local public utility (which is pretty affordable tbh, especially if you can just dump it on your credit card *wink wink a-logs*).

I guess it is possible though that maybe with Jim's health, the smoke might aggravate something? Can't recall if he's fully given up cigarettes or not.

I'd be extremely surprised if it isn't a violation of code not to have some sort of actual furnace and venting system. I'm about 99% certain that trying to sell a house with only a wood stove within the city limits would result in a code violation.
