H-1B DATA MEGA-THREAD

1.png

Before I start, one note: All charts in this thread are for applications that were “certified” (in other words, approved for entry into the H-1B lottery). I filtered out applications the gov rejected.

All numbers here are therefore for visas employers actually and realistically attempted to obtain.

To start with, this program is MASSIVELY popular with employers. The program has a statutory limit of 85,000 visas per year, but employers routinely receive approval for more than 800k applications per year (868k, or 10x the limit, in 2024).

2.png

Contrary to what I expected, the average salary for an H-1B is relatively low—slightly under $120k this year.

Given that much of the H-1B debate pertains to tech workers, I (incorrectly) assumed the average would be higher. But this is the beauty of data, right?

3.png

You can see that salaries are disproportionately weighted toward the lower bands:

17% are < $75k (blue)
21% are $75-100k (orange)
22% are $100-125k (pink)
15% are $125-150k (teal)

In other words, ~75% are jobs paying < $150k. Only 25% are $150k+, and, of those, only 2.5% are $250k+ (purple).

4.png

I (roughly) categorized job descriptions into computer/software/IT-related roles (teal) and everything else (gray).

Almost all the prominent job categories are tech-related. The two top categories, for software developer roles, are 1.1M over five years by themselves.

5.png

Basically every role with 30k+ H-1B applications is for a STEM field, with the exception of accountants and auditors (49k). Most of them IT-related, at that.

There’s a little more variety in roles with smaller numbers, but the overall tilt towards STEM remains throughout.

Let’s review applications by employer (again, with teal representing IT roles and gray being everything else).

There are some HUGE numbers here. 15 companies alone received approval for 20k+ applications each.

We’ll go back to employers momentarily.

6.png

Looking at applications by employer NAICS code, 5415 (computer systems design) absolutely dwarfs everything else: 1.2M applications over five years.

The next two largest are 6113 (universities) and 5416 (consulting).

As consultants like to say, let’s double-click into this.

7.png

NAICS code 5415 (computer systems design) is the category for many of the larger employers we saw above. Some of the companies here—Google, IBM, Salesforce—are household names.

But what about the other large applicants here, which aren’t as familiar (Cognizant, Infosys, Tata)?

8.png

As it turns out, these are ALL Indian companies that import H-1B tech workers en masse:
Cognizant (93k)
Infosys (61k)
Tata Consultancy Services (60k)
Wipro
Capgemini
HCL
Compunnel
Tech Mahindra
Mphasis

These aren’t American companies that needed international talent to fill critical roles. They’re foreign companies that appear to have been founded to place overseas tech workers into US companies as contractors.

9.png
10.png
11.png
12.png

What jobs are these companies seeking visas for?

A metric f**k ton of IT and software roles. Over the past five years, 80k+ computer systems analysts (Cognizant is the big player here). 50k+ systems engineers/architects (Cognizant + Tata). Programmers (looks like Wipro and Mphasis concentrate here) and IT project managers (Infosys).

13.png

The chart here shows each company’s average salary for each role. I’ve added a shaded gray band between $80-120k to highlight where the preponderance of salaries fall.

I’ve spent my career in M&A and corporate finance, and I’ve been involved in a lot of budget and hiring decisions. Unless we’ve overpaid every developer and IT person at every company I’ve ever worked for, $80-120k for roles like this is NOT market.

14.png

The H-1B program isn't just Indian companies requesting visas for IT workers, though.

The list of companies seeking visas for accountants is a who's who of Big Four and other prominent accounting firms. EY is crushing the competition with 16k+ applications.

15.png

EY also has the largest share of employers seeking visas for finance-related jobs, followed by investment banks Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, and Citibank.

16.png

Here are the roles for which EY sought visas, along with average salaries. Everything from accountants (16k) to computer systems analyst (7k) to actuaries (600 or so). EY isn't even a major player in the world of actuaries!

There's zero reason why they couldn't hire these people domestically.

17.png

Here's Amazon's main H-1B LLC:

18.png

Google, not surprisingly, had 45k applications for software developers alone.

19.png

You can see where I’m going with this. A casual perusal of the data shows that this isn’t a program for the top 0.1% of talent, as it’s been described. This is simply a way to recruit hundreds of thousands of relatively lower-wage IT and financial services professionals.

America needs to be a destination for the world’s most elite talent. But the H-1B program isn’t the way to do that.

I’m going to stop posting for now, but let me know if there are any other visualizations that would be helpful.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

Wipro, Infosys,TaTa, Cognizant, and HCL make up WITCH. Companies so exploitive, low quality and cheap that they are infamous in the field. They are the opposite of FANG wherein having them on your resume is a blackmark.

I have encountered Cognizant, Capgemini, HCL, and Infosys working for my clients alongside us. I don't know about H1Bs but they were mostly either foreign teams working in their home countries or were foreign teams the clients had imported and put up in entire company managed apartment buildings.

The Capgemini ones were nice but they weren't India. The rest I have no good comments on at this time.

It's literally companies slashing payroll for quarterly reports by shipping in jeets and eventually making a close to low end white IQ jeet CEO the "Yes Saar" to the board that can make them feel more conformatable about the jeetification and ultimate decline of the corp. Capitalism is always anti-national

The truth of the matter is simply this: the businesscucks who run these companies hate the SWE. They cannot stand the SWE. The SWE (at least the competent ones) is too scarce and too principled and too cash-rich to boss around.

The middle-management screams that the SWE must get back in the wage cage. They must commute to downtown negrofied ghettos and spend money at expensive restaurants and be present at the office for HR drones to gawk at. The SWE says no and quits to go work at a smaller business (often a competitor) that doesn't care where they work from.

Executives demand that a corner be cut so functionality can be delivered in half the time but at 3x the potential risk to end users. The SWE disagrees, it goes against their professional ethics. When executives double-down, the SWE demands they get everything in writing so they can testify when someone inevitably gets maimed/defrauded/raped by some retarded half-baked software.

Jeets (none of them are SWEs) will gladly get in the wage cage, and they love to say yes while not having things on the record. Like the barcode man says, management thinks the jeets can either do the job as good or at the very least scare the SWE into behaving lest he lose his job. This does not work - the SWE is an autist with simple pleasures. He may not even have a wife or children meaning 100% of his income is spent on himself or stashed away in savings. When the times are bad, the SWE simply fucks off and takes a vacation and nothing infuriates the businesscuck more than the fact that the SWE can simply walk away, jerk off and drink beer for a year or two, and then come back completely unscathed when the jeets have trashed the company (while demanding a considerable premium for his return). This is partly why American tech salaries are so obscene - they keep trying the jeet, the jeets ruin everything, and the domestic SWE comes back except he wants 2x the base pay he had last time and you better not call him after 5 PM or he'll take the open position at your competitor.

They hate us because they keep trying to fuck us and we invariably fuck them back. In five years, we'll be in a jeetcession again and they'll seethe about how entry-level SWEs are now making 200k/year or something absurd because time is a flat circle.

I was at the mall a few days ago buying clothes and I went down the escalator.

Behind me was a large Indian family. In front of me was an Indian on the phone. The Indian family behind me smelled bad, like sweat and curry.

The kiosks were nothing but Indians playing on their phone. These are your H1Bs saar. Enjoy.
How can they not be aware of how bad they smell? Seriously, do they not notice everyone within 50 feet of them being grossed out?
Also @Fcret I cant reply but youre correct. Same with doctors there is a serious supply/demand imbalance which is why programmers get paid $300k to do 30 minutes of work a day from home in their underwear which company owners+management hates for obvious reasons. Ironically the only solution is to invest in properly training americans to be programmers so theres more supply to drive prices down which they absolutely refuse to do. Why they picked pajeets is beyond me. Eastern europeans and mainland chinese are actually competent and are just as desperate to escape their shithole while also being more compatible with western society.

Yes and no.

Generally speaking people can't smell their own BO.

But Indian culture is such that it's a flex to force other people to put up with you being a rude obnoxious asshole. So them stinking? And making other people have to put up with it? The fact that you don't immediately throw them out of the building means they're better than you.

This is the mindset of the sub 75 IQ Indian.

Its like elliot roger and cyraxx had 1.6 billion children

The only nations in the world that can actually stand each other, and will actually help each other are white ones lmao. It's so painfully obvious how inferior everyone else is. The only reason anyone outside of Europe and the USA exists, is because Europe and the USA took time off from wiping them out, to fuck up each other up for a short time, build the entire modern world; create everything of value, and then take some time to ourselves.
Now the Japanese Navy wiped the floor with the Russian Navy then again it's the Russian Navy defeating the Russian Navy is like punching a baby when it comes to European sea power.

Let me categorize all of the Asians
Japanese angles of Asia masters of naval combat
Koreans Germans of Asia love work way too much kill themselves because they're not doing too well at work
afghanis Finns of Asia high in the woods will shoot you from the bushes don't like anybody who's not from their country we generally leave people alone if they're not bothered.

Filipinos mediterraneans of Asia make good food nice people good Catholics

Indians blacks of Asia lazy low IQ convinced themselves the better than they actually are they stink can't take care of the young scam artists

mongolians Greeks of Asia at one point they had a great empire and they've not done anything since.

And if honestly any part of Asia is gonna become a superpower with Indonesia that is a rapidly growing economy that is actually based on real things rather than scam artistry it's also not constantly tearing itself apart

300,000 that's cute my friend who is a 25 year software veteran gets paid half a million plus stock options and he moves companies whenever he gets bored he's white actually all the programmers I know are white guys

Gonna crosspost my comment from the Canada is a failed state thread:

... one time, my mother was at a location in... well, not important. The important part is she watched one of these fucking dung farmers press a bread roll against the others face, saying "Feel. Warm! Right?" before bagging the fucking thing and hanging it off to a drive-thru customer. Lethal Weapon 2 line here. Thankfully, my mother bolted out, flagged down the guy who was given this face roll, and explained. I won't go into what happened afterwards beyond saying that this happened around 2010.

I learned today that most Indians that come to the US on student visas are in fact not the cream of the crop but literally the rejects that have no career or educational prospects in India.

Some of you in this thread may already be familiar with the university systems in India. If not, here's a short summary: public universities are extremely difficult to get into and jeets have to compete against hundreds of thousands to get into them. Think half a million or more competing for something like 5000 spots. Think of these public universities as if they're MIT or CalTech (disregard whether the quality of education is actually equivalent). Basically, they get into one of these universities, they'll be set for life if they put in the work. For everyone else who doesn't get in, their mom and dad pay for them to go to whatever private "universities" they have around (which they state are "affiliated" with the public universities but are just grifts because jeets love scamming each other).

So, what does a jeet who went to these private "universities" do after he graduates? If he applies for a job, his degree is worthless because everyone there knows whatever shitty private school he went to isn't the real deal. If he attempts to go to higher education, he's incapable of competing with the top 0.01% jeets who are coming in from those public universities they couldn't get into. Well here comes dumb fuck college administrators in your choice of western country who just love their tuition revenue. The jeets who couldn't cut it in India apply for these programs and pay the tuition. The programs just rubber stamp them through because the professors are either in on the scam or don't give a shit anymore after having to deal with rampant jeet cheating. And now you have thousands of useless jeets with western masters' degrees to their names that HR simply finds mesmerizing.

By the way, the masters' programs often end up with looser requirements for jeets than for natives because jeets will fake whatever coursework or recommendations they need to get in. Meanwhile, natives have to deal with all sorts of college politics bullshit to get into those programs (how many of you with post-graduate degrees had to kiss your professors' asses to get those recommendation letters).

These are the people that tech companies fight to hire.

On an unrelated note, here's something some of the jeets at my work were talking about this past week.

Some background: apparently India passed some law a few years ago related to spousal abuse and divorce as a partial response to the international attention they got from the multiple grotesque stories about rapes that came out of the country. Basically, the law requires cops immediately respond to any spousal abuse allegations made by women against their husbands or their husbands' families and if proven/a divorce is approved, the husband is apparently required to pay 30% for child support and 50% of whatever is left over to the wife as alimony. Setting aside the merits of such a law, this being jeet country, I hope you see where this is going.

There is now apparently a market for helping women (and/or her parents) file false claims of abuse against their husbands in order to secure money.

So the hot topic of the week was some jeet who committed suicide because his wife and her parents basically ruined his life by filing repeated false claims. So now, there seems to be a trend on the jeettube side about whether men are being discriminated against by these laws.
