FNAF had an interesting gameplay gimmick that made it stand out. DDLC is just cute thing is actually creepy which isn't really that fresh outside of getting meta with it.
It's not even that scary for the most part. Sure, Sayori's suicide and its buildup is more intense than you'd initially expect from a game that seems pretty generic at first, but once you know how the story goes, the spooooky evil glitches and fourth wall breaks that come after that lose their effect and just look campy. It's just another "Fun cute game was actually dark and scary this whole time!" that got lucky and was covered by the right Youtubers.

The 'ironic following' Ronnie McNutt and other suicide victims have online is very odd. To go a little bit off topic, a lot of it has to do with Trihard wannabe kiddos using the videos as shockers to upset livestreamers who have mediashares enabled (such as in the case of Bill Jensen, as seen here), but putting the videos of these people killing themselves into an AI program and having it dress the footage up is just plain bizarre - I don't think it's the fault of the AI developers/websites themselves for this phenomenon, though it could probably be solved with better moderation.
