Ecofags successfully got Yucca Mountain stopped which was a prerequisite for expanding our nuclear generation capacity. Ecofags will always find something even if they have to break out a microscope to see it.

Nuclear waste storage was only proposed at yucca mountain after carter blocked the possibility of using breeder reactors to reprocess spent rods into useable fuel. Nuclear waste can be recycled into useable fuel almost indefinitely, but a portion of the recycled fuel us also potentially useful for creating nuclear weapons, which was anathema to snti-nuclear activists.

This is a part of why nuclear has ended up so expensive. Most world governments followed carter's lead in banning or indefinitely postponing reprocessing and now have nowhere to send their nuclear waste for re-use, which necessitates some form of storage.

Once civilian fuel is in the reactor more than a month the first time, there is too much of the bad plutonium mixed in with the good plutonium. It at least an order of magnitude more difficult to separate plutonium isotopes from each other compared to uranium. It isn't even a concern. Unfortunately, Carter was at Chalk River for the cleanup, and that soured his view on nuclear for the rest of his life.

But holy shit, would it be a nightmare to logistically pull off right before the Inauguration. DC would be a shitshow, not to mention the fact that most of the rank and file Democrat operatives who would be organizing this are on Christmas break now, and were planning on spending the next 20 days packing and polishing their resumes while winding things down. I bet some weren't even coming back after New Years.
