The point I was making was that American patriotism has weaned over the years. American made, American owned, being American used to mean something special that anybody could be a part of. Immigration used to be a rite of passage that meant you wanted/believed the American Dream of being whatever, whoever you wanted to be for a better life. Something you EARNED and WORKED for. Not every immigrant's journey was an easy (or fair one), but mass importing third world citizens that want to leech off their host country or be cheap labor isn't helping matters. at first it was just small products like consumer electronics (I have a vintage GE alarm clock from the early 60s that was made in hong kong). it really picked up the pace when high interest rates from the volcker shock crushed manufacturing entirely. Yes, there were two great crashes in American living standards. One is post-1973, where we really let the floodgates to the third world open. The other was in the 1870s when we did the same. I'd argue that immigration irrevocably affected the American identity in a negative way, caused an immense amount of issues and harm to actual Americans, and fostered an insanely corrupt political culture that has since re-emerged today. It really was a "First Great Replacement", where politicians imported voters as needed. 25% of Massachusetts's population was foreign born in 1920, and many other states over 10%.

America didn't even begin to fix this problem until the 1960s. It took 40 years of strictly enforced immigration laws, strict quotas, and government programs to make everyone speak English to even start assimilating those people. And by then we threw open the floodgates again to a far, far worse lot of immigrants than white/mostly white Europeans. All while failing to learn the lesson from the first wave of migration that ensured we fell prey to the idea of America as a melting pot which so naturally leads to the idea of America as a cultureless economic zone. I used to think so, but now I know my ancestors helped ruin America. I wish other Americans whose ancestors came over here back then learned the same.

Allowing citizenry on broader and broader terms until eventually the home grown crop of civilians who would have died for the nation, are replaced by people who flee at the first sign of conflict since this isn't their homeland.
