The women drawing manhwa, I've noticed, are saddeningly so fond of the same pretty boy with bangs (female gaze twink fags blah blah you know the drill) and lovely delicate lady (for people who really wanna break gender norms, they sure stick to the norms of delicate, beautiful women ). Like, I get at least manga tries to put older-looking people and not make them look super ugly, but manhwa does a really bad job at that. Every manhwa guy looks the same, even if they're from different comics. The artists are all copycats - it's even worse when you know they're spreading their shit on TikTok.
Another thing that irks me about the manhwa style so popular among ladies is that it's not very good for plucky, sharp, funny, energetic, impactful expressions. It's only good for a poker face staring into space, like a beautiful doll with no life or substance. Same goes for the jelly artstyle which started drama some time ago for reasons I feel are similar to this. Kind of reminds me of one of the skincare freaks who promoted not smiling or laughing to avoid wrinkles.
If I'd compare the manwha fandom to anything, I'd say it's like a bunch of men (the readers who are more than likely female) in a pleasure district choosing which hooker (manhwa with the same pretty characters over and over like the BBL hookers in slutty clothes) to fuck over and over as many times as desired, even if it is the same empty thing again and again.
I decided to observe what gaze different socmed art circles tend to glue their eyes to. Xitter, Tumblr, Bluescat, and Insta prefer art that appeals to the female gaze. Deviantart and Newgrounds prefer art for the male gaze. I noticed the art that easily got in my Twitter feeds, even without me doing anything, was stuff that appealed to the female gaze. In my Newgrounds feed, however, it was the male-gazey stuff. Now, I'm not saying Twitter has no male gaze stuff, but all I'm saying it is usually spreads stuff with a more femme vibe. I finally admit it: the male gaze stuff was more fun to look at. I actually felt the imagination and liberation running wild through every expression and movement portrayed. It felt like playing as a child again without a care in the world, giving "deep" lore to the toys I was playing with. It was out of this world, OK, but it was fun.
