you people suddenly don't seem to remember what types of fans this franchise is attached to

it was of utmost importance that a my little pony-esque screw-up be avoided
(Last post for the year lol)

This is very factually it really gets to a point when most idw crew (people that shouldn't have control) are balanty just gooners/snowflakes that are horny on main with no nsfw warning or anything while the fans are okay with this?

Even criticing recent shit will get you put on a stake and blocked by these nutjobs.

I think the problem for sega American is stop hiring weirdos or look deeper into them. even though they might come off as "Good intention fans" then devoles into weird people having control of this franchise and i dont want that.

And really i just want sonic to be cool again for this new year.

Merry Christmas sonic kiwis!!

Pardon my lack of knowledge about The canon status of the IDW books, but are they officially part of the game canon or is that just wishful thinking on part of IDW staff and fans?

The original pitch was that it was still its own separate continuity, but would actually be based on the game canon unlike previous comics; the world of IDW would be identical to the games up until the end of Forces, where the comic picks up and starts doing its own thing in a separate direction from wherever the games continue.

When Frontiers released, a couple of throwaway lines were included referencing IDW characters, cementing them as canon... but unclear about the stories themselves. After all, Sticks was also referenced, but there's no way for Boom to have been canon, so was it possible that it merely canonized the characters as also existing in the game world, separate from whatever antics they got into in the comic world? Iizuka later stated that he "wanted to" consolidate the continuities into one canon instead of having it all splintered like in the 90s/2000s, but the future tense still implied it wasn't quite there yet.

Finally, more recently, it's been confirmed that the comics are now officially canon to the games, though since nothing's really been released since then except for games that take place before the comics started (Shadow gens, Superstars), we've yet to see much of an impact from the decision so far. On the other side of that, I think I heard rumblings that Ian had mentioned a while ago that since the games (post-Forces) are likewise now canon in the comics, there'll be a timeskip to after Frontiers "at some point in the future", but don't quote me on that.

tl;dr they changed their mind multiple times, but after much ambiguity the games and IDW comics are now fully canon to each other, results yet to be seen

Yet to be confirmed, but Flynn's preparing a series finale marathon to get all of the leaked questions out of the way. 1 podcast episode until Jan 1st is the plan, but the problem is, if just one episode post-disclaimer was enough for Sega to give him an ultimatum, then him not taking "no" for an answer might just have him kicked off the series altogether.

Here's hoping. 🙏

On the other hand, brace yourselves, cuz that just means he has nothing left to lose. Expect Evan to use this as her cue to turn the comic into Sonic: Veilguard out of retaliation.

Hopefully this choice doesn't turn the games into crap because of all their strange choices for characters and plots in the comics.

Another bit I should bring up, is that Evan won't even write for the next comic, so there's that at least. Still, if she does take the comic into a Veilguard-esque direction, and Sega makes good on their "anti-harrassment" policy, then that kinda begs the question... Who Will Bell The Cat?

Who's gonna be the one to challenge Sega's lawyers on the matter of free speech? We all know that legally speaking, such policies shouldn't hold up in a court of law, so someone's gonna have to risk it all by calling their bluff, or this practice will steadily become mainstream.

They follow the games, but so far the only thing that's happened for the reverse is that Sonic has some (hard to trigger) voice lines about Tangle in Frontiers.

I don't really fuck with IDW, but can anybody explain what the point of Restoration is? Frontier's writing seems really desperate to make the characters from it canon through really easy to miss dialogue snuck in, and it's ostensibly founded to help rebuild the world after Eggman's bullshit in Forces, but literally everything looks just fine? The world looks like it bounced back pretty smoothly, like it always does, there's no societal breakdown, city wreckage, looting, bandits roaming the land, or any signs of Eggman's worldwide conquest being anything more than another wacky scheme of the week in the long run, so all they really seem to provide is an excuse for Ian's OCs to show up and act as the "homebase" for them, which seems super antithetical to the series. Near as I can tell, they can't even really do anything about the few villains around until Sonic and his canon friends show up, either.

I imagine they're "canon" in the sense that yeah sure, Sonic will occasionally mention Tangle and Whisper hanging out, or even show a version of Sticks, but there's really no way he's gonna just be hanging out at Restoration HQ in one of the games and have to reintroduce them or hope you read the comics.
I hope Surge is ACTUALLY canon, because she's pretty cool when she can actually fight worth a damn instead of angsting about being Metal Sonic but worse.

Even with the looser restrictions back at archie, do you think they'd show any of that in the capacity you're expecting? You're putting way too much thought into this, especially given how gutted and toothless forces narrative was.

Edit: fixed a word

It just seems weird they'd go out of their way to imply Eggman's reign having wider results through an organization, then proceed to never show said results.

Its in line with the series,, like the state of the moon depending on the writer's mood. By the logic forces tried to establish, eggman would have to have killed billions thanks to the 2 times he split the planet up in advance 3 and unleashed

Sonic is still a kids game. They aren't going to put stuff in about genocide happening. I mean the old cartoon with Sally was considered dark and edgy at the time, and look at how wacky it is. They were also trying to do something like that in Sonic 06, so that might be concern for pause.

Then again, Sonic 2 was supposed to have a genocide zone. Clearly intentional and not due to the japanese devs not understanding the word because of language barriers.

Damn, they wanted it to be like that all along...
