The first 10 was worse than the CC seasons. Worst episodes ever made tier. Don't bother watching those! The last 10 are slightly better than the CC seasons. Don't know why they didn't start with them.

I agree. And I have to reiterate that the anthology episode from the first Hulu season is hands-down the absolute ever and they might not be able to top it even if they drag the show out another ten seaons. The writer on it is some guy with the same last name as one of the other writers, and no other writing credits on anything -- i.e. he's evidently a nepo hire.

Usually it's episodes that have divisive politics, unpopular retcons etc that are seen as the worst. This is something different: it was plainly written by a guy who should not be writing professionally. It's not funny AT ALL and doesn't make any sense. Zombie Simpsons isn't funny but it's at least fairly coherent. This is like that episode of Dexter's Lab where they animated a 5-year-old's story, but without the self-awareness. There's no way anybody working on the show could've thought it was passable. There had to be some kind of backroom politics involved, or they ran out of time or something.

imo the CC era had a handful of truly great episodes, but more meh ones. Second Hulu season is consistently pretty good, but never great. Admittedly it helps that almost anything would look good compared to the first Hulu season.

Rewatching the old seasons it is kind of remarkable how timeless a lot of the show is. Parodying goofy sci-fi tropes far surpasses the generic South Park style relevant flavor of the month topical content. Comedy Central had this problem too but Hulu seems to have quadrupled down on this style of writing.

The episode where zoidberg needs to find a mate is always going to be funny no matter when you watch it, the episode about Fry binging streaming shows or getting a new iPhone is borderline unwatchable, not just because it's badly written (it is) but also because it's entirely reliant on knowing wtf the show is even getting at.

To not even get into anything divisive like politics, remember the Susan Boil episode?

Even the gender swap episode was better than that.

So I started the Hulu futurama watch.

And... well I've got to be honest, it's better than I remember the CC episodes. Or at least, I can remember these episodes better than a lot of those.

Now to define my terms, I'm going to use "topical" to basically refer to things like politics or fads which were in vogue when the episode was made. For me, there is a simple spectrum of "good" topical and "annoying" topical.

At the annoying end, is the Susan Boil episode. (Need I say more?) If you forget that Susan Boil was a person once upon a time, the entire thing becomes baffling.

Anyway, with that in mind....

Well I think this worked better than the CC return episode, which was actually not too bad.

So I grade "topical" episodes on a simple scale: How well do you have to be aware of the topic for the episode to work?

Streaming has reached the saturation point now that I don't consider referencing it to be "topical" any more than referencing elevators or television.

I also really appreciate that Fry and Leela seem to be acting like a mature couple instead of just being reset-button back to the "will-they-wont-they" mode.

I enjoy continuity and call backs, and feel like this was done right (even with the Whale Biologist with a new job).

Ok I'll admit, I burst out laughing when the show did the "those tadpoles who make it to shore" followed by one of the most gruesome sequences animated in years. That is some of the pitch-black humor I want from my Futurama. The last act of the episode was weak, but that opener was strong enough to carry it all forward.

Plus it was great to see Kiff kick some ass. I'm actually kind of enjoying the show letting the characters push forward. Even Amy was more mature this time.

I... actually think this was even better than the opener pulling off perfectly what I mean where they take a "topic" (in this case, crypto) and use it to weave a high concept tale - in this case a scifi western. Heck it didn't even have any kind of "messaging" or commentary on crypto really, just taking advantage of it to set up the story. (I wonder if some of the math nerds on staff are too into crypto for them to make the show preachy about them.) This felt very Futurama and I honestly enjoyed watching it. The bit with Hermes and his son felt a bit tacked on and was by far the weakest part. Though the final 3 way shooting duels was hilarious and very on brand.

Well.... they can't all be the star trek episode.

I still can't hate them doing a Dune episode, though it is hard not to compare it to the infinitely superior Trek one. This episode felt like they read the wikipedia article on Dune or just watched the movie.

I felt weirdest about this one. I was a lover of Dune back in the day and I almost always enjoy Nibbler episodes as well as the original parasite one. Something about combining them all together though... just didn't come together. Currently the bottom of the rankings, but it's still not that bad and I would watch it over a great many of the CC episodes.

This one... is kind of reversed from a lot of the previous. Like IMO it starts weaker then finishes strong. It's annoying topical - but then becomes a more straight scifi tale that I expect of the best Futuramas. Though again I'm thrilled to see Leela and Fry moving forward in their relationship.

Weirdly both memorable and forgettable as an episode.

And that's what I've seen so far. Fight me if you wanna. I'll judge the rest of the season when I get drunk enough to bother.

Of course I'm still waiting by the phone for when the show runners realize they need the TRUE star to come back and save their ratings.

here in the dark future of 2025 we dread which show will have the painfully unfunny Skibidi Toilet episode first: South Park, Simpsons, or Futurama
presidential campaigns did it the previous year

I finally watched the latest Hulu season and... yeesh. Not impressed.

Also what is with like four of the episodes ending with some crazy terrible event that would have them all killed or enslaved, but followed up in the next episode like nothing? The clothes apocalypse was never followed up on and the coffee aliens were never followed up on. I guess the last episode being about "alternate universes" was supposed to cover that, but it did a shit job.

The NFT episode was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

I think I saw that back in the day. I also miss all the old skool Simpsons sites. I remember getting banned for spamming No Homers Club Forum because The Simpsons sucked and they're were all lame Canucks.
